Update : since it was winter until recently I didn’t try the recharge kit. Finally got it to the shop and they confirmed my YouTube certified diagnosis that the aC line is bad.

Quote for parts and labor is $900. FML.

They have to order the part and it won’t be in until next Wednesday so I took the car back home so I have something to drive around since the wife is away and the boys are always off to somewhere so I can’t guarantee I can use one of their cars.

While it was there I had them quote me for the steering rack issue that was coming and going and now been diagnosed as needing to be replaced at only 95K miles. Quote for that is 2200 🤦🏻‍♂️

Local shop manager told me have Hyundai dealer check it first maybe they know something more about it like a TSB or can at least verify it for that much money. I was like probably the stealership is going to charge me more.

It’s times like these I want to trade this one in instead of sinking more money into it but good used cars are expensive still even if I wanted to downsize to a smaller SUV or something. Sigh.

Maybe time to learn how to change the steering rack yourself. It's not a terrible job on most vehicles

Don’t have the tools, time or enough life insurance to cover when I make a mistake. If I was back in HS I might have tried it these days I just complain and pay.

Tools are easily purchased and are an investment. Your kids are grown so time shouldn't be an issue. As for life insurance just don't be careless. Might take you longer but ya gotta learn somehow

Mine was a cracked condenser. $1100. Honestly, thought they'd charge more.

How much are the parts vs labor? Years ago I was told there aren't many aftermarket parts for Korean cars, meaning repairs were expensive bc of parts upcharge. Wonder if it's still the same.

I always wished I grew up working on cars more. Took auto shop in HS, but didn't have friends or family who worked on them, so never wrenched much. I'm the only source of income and insurance in the house, so that's my excuse...

My wife had a Genesis coupe (before Hyundai split Genesis out) and parts for that were a non issue to get or afford (thankfully) as it seemed to constantly need parts after 5or 6 years old

Same here I took auto shop and wrenched on cars before and during college but didn’t go beyond the basics. Also the primary income earner here so no need to increase risks with a major DIY auto repair gone bad. I’ll stick to changing wiper blades and the occasional power seat switch.

honestly the biggest risk with every rack/pinion iv ever done is not finishing it in one day,

looks like you can get a NEW cardone r&p for his car for ~$550 or a reman as cheap as $350 from autozone. the only thing most cannot do at home is the alignment after changing it (firestone charged ~$200 for a lifetime alignment last time i checked)
 
Hey all - hope someone might have a recommendation for a local Euro shop that can repair a DSG (dual clutch) Audi transmission. I just got a call from the dealer - they suggest replacing the trans, at a cost of $13K!! They state that Audi guidelines would prevent them from performing a repair, and a replacement is the only option. From my research, I have reason to believe that all that is needed is a replacement of a 5th/6th gear support bearing, which should be substantially less than cost of a new trans...
 
Dropped off my Subaru last week for some warranty work which required removal of the turbo. I went to pick it up on Friday evening and when I started it up I immediately heard an exhaust leak. They couldn’t look at it until today.

Based on this, I’m hoping I have brakes for the ride home (since they touched those too). Asshole mode on standby, hopefully will not need to activate lol
