Cars, it's electric! Do Do Do

In. Wifey's new Telluride fell thru - dealer changed ownership right after we placed our order and they blew it - won't come in by Friday which was the last possible day so they refunded our deposit. Now wifey is thinking about a Tesla X. If she likes it, maybe I can sneak in the plaid upgrade...
May I ask why the X and not the others, Y or 3?

Do. Not. Get. An. X. Don't do it. A Y might be OK. A riding buddy got one recently and he loves it but he's still on the honeymoon. YMMV. You can get a really nice Taycan 4 Cross Turismo for Model X Plaid money.

Why? Haven't even looked at one yet other than seeing one in a parking lot.

Is it the ride height and ability to see over things or the amount of room? The S has lots of room. I test rode one years ago, pretty nice cars. Has she test driven any of them yet? Will your Queen get her car faster than @Patrick did?

She wants height more than room. Maybe it's not the right choice but she likes Tesla. Will def look at other options. We ordered the Telluride first week in feb when they said it would take 8 to 12 weeks. The plan was to leave the Subaru in FL and drive the new car to NJ, but now that we are heading back, it doesn't make any sense to buy something until we get back to FL end of December.

I want that Taycan Cross Turismo so badly. Only car out there that has me tempted to sell the Golf R and Cayman to fund, but it would still be outside of my "sane person" budget.

Seems like everyone is pushing electric cars these days. The performance that can be had is really good (tesla plaid for instance) but the range is going to be an issue for a long time until the technology and infrastructure catches up for battery capacity and fast charging stations all over the place that charge from 0 to fully charged in a few minutes. But it will come someday, I predict that gas vehicles will be the majority on the road for the next 10-15 years at least. You'll see gas vehicles for many years to come. Eventually I think it will flip and you'll see boutique gas car manufacturers who make gas powered cars for enthiusiasts.

If i was in the market i'd be all over the ford lightning

Infrastructure is already here for us costal elites, you just don't realize it since you don't have to use it.

In ten or fifteen years there will be 2 kinds of people in gas cars. Rich and poor ppl, performance enthusiast have only one viable option to compete.

can you charge from dead to full in 5 minutes or less? I see chargers here and there but no where near enough if you were to replace all vehicles with electric. Also the range with today's batteries is fine for basic commuting and around town where you charge it every night but if you wanted to do a real road trip you couldn't in an electric vehicle.

this here is the big holdup for electric car takeover (no, im not even a little bit of a fan of electric but thats beside the point right now). The range vs recharge time is just not there for the general population to convert at this point. I would say if you can get a range of 300 miles (roughly a tank of gas in most cars these days) and recharge in under 10 minutes (this is generous, since i can fill the tank on my truck in 4 and its double the size of most cars) and people will start looking, as long as it doesnt cost them a bunch more.

also keep in mind the electric grid in this country couldnt handle that many cars all being charged at once, hell some places get rolling brownouts/blackouts when the a/c goes on in the summertime, imagine that kind of draw but all year round, yea some MAJOR improvements to infrastructure need to be made before electric can takeover. 10 -15 years min, they will of course slowly gain market share in that time.

That said performance enthusiasts are unlikely to be on the early edge of converting bc part of the draw to cars is the sound and driving dynamics, and electric cars offer no (natural) sound and a completely different driving dynamic (no need to shift gears ect).

Honestly how many miles a day do you guys drive? When full time commuting I do 280 miles a week. A standard model 3 is 263 so ever 6 days is when I would need a charge. I go to Vermont almost every 2 months and that is within range. I go to OBX once a year it is 600 miles and with 2 kids I need to take stops so they can piss on their shoes or eat off the floor somewhere. I could see this being an issue for long haul drivers but that isn't me and I think most drivers fall into the same habits.

Well when we drive from NJ to FL it's about1200 miles. According to google and Elon, there are plenty of tesla supercharger stations along the way

PS there are none in NJ. Does Elon hate NJ??
