Chimney Rock - Beat My Time

Updated. And where is Woody? I know he did a loop.

Yeah, we need to get more people up on the list. 6MR is an oddity, where people throw their time up there regardless. I think most places are going to see a situation where the rider won't post a time unless they win. That's why I would tend to go really easy on the first try to make it completely attainable.

After Labor Day I'm going to do an RV loop. My thought was to start at the boat launch and go full out, up and over Cushetunk, then take the road back. I want to do that to keep the time reasonable, since a full up & over & back is going to be 2.5 hours for many people. But do you think that adding the 4 miles of pavement is going to turn people off?

I guess I could make it from lot to lot and then leave the return optional.

Answer: Yes, take that little path.. When Woody, Dave and I laid it out, that was the intent. Unless you look for that path it is easy to miss. But even if you have to get off and carry over the chain... its cross season! Here's a spot to practice dismounts and mounts...😀

So follow up question. Coming out of the blue, did you hop the chain on the blue side like a log, or is there a little path I missed, or do you just go up/around like you'd normally exit the blue loop?

Yeah, I made an attempt on Wednesday evening. I DNF'ed. 😱

My cleats were way worn out, so the combination of wet slippery rocks and me pushing hard had me popping out and dabbing constantly. I called it quits on the TT right after crossing the dam, and just took a random casual ride after that.

Now I've got new shoes & cleats, so I'll give it another shot this week... :getsome:

Nice job on your run Norm. Cheater.

Jeremy, if he strayed where I think he strayed, I think a 1-minute penalty is in order. Not that he really gained a full minute with that detour...just to be fair to anyone who gets a real close time while staying on course.

Norm, to answer your question, there is a little path just to the left of the chain on both sides of the road. Pretty overgrown, but definitely there if you look. Jumping the chain is OK IMO. We avoided the usual route through the parking lot so the loop wouldn't pass too close to the starting point and make the map confusing.

I agree with this. If someone goes slightly off course and beats the time by 2 seconds, it opens up a can of worms. Not that this is the Olympics or anything. But rules are good for these things.

Thanks for the route clarifications.

I'd also suggest getting out there sooner than not. The leaves are already starting to fall.

another spot I see norm took a little shortcut... behind the ball fields, 3/4 way though the loop, he took the fork to the left which leads right down to the little drop and then to gilbride.

The way we did it was continue around the loop, veer to the right and go down that way. Then take the doubletrack to gilbride.

A 3rd one in the white trails too. It looks like you guys went up that steep climb to pretty much pinch the course on itself.

I think these are mistakes that many will make. This is the inherent problem with these, that you're going to need to ride it at least twice to get the full loop down. Of course it's nothing like Matty's maze at DP 🙂

I'd dock me 3 minutes for the 3 mistakes, which would put my in 2nd place unless you use Elapsed Time. Or you could give me a "buy 2 get 1 free" Mistake Sale and dock me 2 minutes.

On that note, what's the difference between:

Time
Moving Time
Elapsed Time

?

Elapsed seems like "real" time, which we may want to consider using. I don't know what the difference between time and moving time is. My GPS has auto-pause, and it read the same as Time. What is moving time, and how is it lower?

Few days ago, I researched this on the interWeb and found the following:

Elapsed Time: total time including all stops
Time: total time with auto-pause
Moving Time: Garmin Connect calculates this based on your upload

So if you have auto-pause turned off, Elapsed Time and Time should theoretically be the same. I've had Time and Moving Time be totally off, but sometimes they are similar. Go figure.

So we should ignore Moving Time.

Thanks for the answer. So when do you throw down at CR? 🙂

I just confirmed this. When I first purchased the Garmin, I didn't have auto-pause turned on:

Time & Moving Time similar at Six Mile:

Time & Moving Time different at Blue:

I have a feeling the moving time calculation gets more inaccurate the more you stop or maybe if you're moving slow.

So we should ignore Moving Time.

I'm planning for the JH one on Thursday although pooh might disapprove. I don't think my HR will go through the roof on Warthog plus it's not that long. I'm not sure I can hit any of the other ones until after the race season is over, unless the training plan changes after 3 weeks.

Holy cripes, I think you should get a DQ and be ceremoniously thrown over the falls. You can't just run these things on autopilot! 😉

However, you may have to DQ me. Towards the end I took what I expected to be the path. When I got towards the bottom, I realized I was coming back on the loop. Coming back down the red trail, alongside the fire road climb, I took what I consider the "standard" way down. Somewhere along the line it goes right, and loops back in - I actually don't even know the trail that I missed.

Coming out of blue, the course appears to go straight across the road, not the usual slight right towards the lot, then dip back into the woods. It appeared to go right through that chain hanging on the other side of the road. I actually had to get off and walk over that chain. I then noticed a small path that goes around it. Is this where the official course goes?

And I did start and stop the GPS like you said.. all good in the hood

The first rule of TTs should be it has to be simple.

This does not sound simple 😉

I'm looking at all this, and going huh? Maybe you guys make it sound complicated, but in any case it could be a disincentive for non-locals to make the drive. So it may be Norm, Jeremy and Woody's TT for a while.

Matty's course, forget about it.

Nevertheless, I'm going to hit CR TT very soon, and whatever my pitiful time is, I'll post it up.

Forget it yes but my first initial thought was what better way for someone to ride the whole park, learn how to navigate and try to beat the time.

You post an out and back a blindman can manage, no need for GPS except for time. But I like it and glad that we can keep it rolling through all the parks. As Bill says breaking up the different parks with short, medium and long can get variety.

I would like to hold a non-official day of stephens maze TT. I think it is prolly best short TT you will find in NJ... Anyone?

Hey, there's always Kirt, ChrisRU, and...well Kirt and Chris.

I think it's impossible to KISS at CR. There are too many trails that could cause confusion. At 6MR there's already a "standard" course that most people know. At CR, 25 different people have 25 preferred routes.

Having said that, I can see how an outsider would be hesitant to try.

I want to try the DP loop. But I'm pretty sure I'll get lost. Bill knows the park and couldn't follow it. I may need to tape directions on the top tube. The GPS is less helpful when the course doubles back on itself.

I think Warthog would be right there with it. You could also do the yellow loop at LM. Not as fun, but easy enough to follow.

Or you could ask nicely and follow me once, of course on your rest week 😀...

Warthog agree, LM no thanks I got enough pre ride for this year...
I am hoping Bill puts a wildcat ridge and jeffdawg sourlands TT...
