Any recommendations for a good one? Are they all the same? Pumping up 29 inch tires with a little pump sucks...

Genuine Innovations is the brand to look for. They are by far the leader in CO2 inflation.

There are many variations of cartridges and inflators.

Threaded cartridges are specific to the bike industry. The come in multiple sizes (measured in grams) and are stocked by bike shops. They are more expensive and come in packs of two or three.

The threads of the cartridge screw into a device that controls the rate of air flow from the cartridge to your tire.

Non-threaded CO2 cartridges were originally intended for Air Guns. Now they are used for bikes as well. You can buy these in bulk (cheap) at any store that sells air guns and paint-ball supplies.

A non-threaded cartridge requires a specific type of inflator. This device holds the cartridge in place against the head/trigger of the inflator.

This type of inflator will work with both threaded and non-threaded cartridges.

I have the Proflate 16. I haven't used it yet (knock on wood), and read many reviews before I finally purchased it.

That reminds me I need to pick up some non-threaded cartridges. It only came with one cartridge.

?? how many cartridges does it take to fill up say an 29" Ignitor to 32lbs psi?

It takes 1.578 cartridges to fill you Igniter to that pressure. 🙄

I highly recommend you try using your CO2 inflator before you actually need it in the woods. You mess up and you are walking.

Then you will know how many it takes to fill your tires.

Your full of gas today 🙂 +1 on trying it at home first, you'll know fingertip frostbite and make sure the bead is seated before you pull the trigger, also a light road tube won't fill the volume a 29 mtb tire in a pinch.

^ haha very funny
I have the CO2 and hate it. I would deff rather have a small pump. Even though it takes 474 more pumps to fill a 29er🙄

question

If you have the cartridge in the inflator for a while (days to months) does it slowly loose air like a paintball gun?

I would "activate" my cartridge to save some room in my pockets/wedge but I don't want to loose air if that is the case.

If its threaded, why not just give it a turn or two to hold it on? But don't go so far as breaking the seal

You may be able to squeeze some air out the next day but anything past that the cartridge will be shot.

NICE! I don't use one of those tiny air chucks or whatevers that require threaded cartridges. I got one of those with the screw in base. You can actually turn your cartridge around and screw the base and the tip sticks out. SHWEEEEET, but I'm sure I'm not the first to realize this 😱 but just as an FYI
