Commuting

I keep wanting to commute in to work, but riding the 4 lane road north of Main St Manville (Finderne) makes me sketched. Then I talk myself out of it. See da darwing

It has a sidewalk the whole length doe. I see some chick on a Huffy and a Sean John coat with the fur on the hood riding it daily. Maybe we can link up and paceline and get to work faster? :hmmm:

I would but we opposite directions.

The redzone isn't that bad. Going south I'll get on the sidewalk from BK to the Valero. If traffic is clear before the bridge I jump back on to the road and the shoulder on the bridge is wide enough. That's where I dropped my chain yesterday.

Going north I try to time my presence plus cars to a minimum. When that light is red at Valero I'll go and take up the whole f'ing lane and scoot over when traffic knows I'm there. Otherwise 3/10 I just take sidewalk. There is just so much shit on the road and sidewalks from the Cinema to Route 22. Two of my three flats were in Manville

3 of the last 6 times I rode to work I got a flat. I NEVER got a flat last year. I stay away from the crap on the side of the road.

Or are the roads really that bad?

Am I running too wide tires (32) and picking shit up? I don't have PSI too high or low and I had good tread.

Should I ditch the fenders so whatever I pick up doesn't ricochet and I'm more prone to tire piercing.

Was about to toss my bike into the Raritan yesterday. Flat. Lost a screw to my fender so it rattled the whole way home. Fixed chain dropped from riding off curb to get off sidewalk but that was my bad. I was too mad an lazy to fix tension after I bolted my wheel back on. It was actually scary cause the chain got tangled up and a skidded to a stop. Burning rubber

Get some sheldon nuts so you can take your fenders on and off really easy. Over the winter I don't remove them but this time of year they only come on when it is really bad out.

I am assuming you did all the checking to make sure it isn't something in your tread or a burr on your rim that is causing the flat?

yea I checked. Every time it's been a solid puncture. Interesting Sheldon nut but I have brake bosses. I have to remove my screws because when I bolt or unbolt wheel it interferes. These events have motivated me to build up the crosscheck so I can have gears and get to work faster and not worry about carrying bike wrench and lining my wheel back up.

i want to commute to my new gig every once in a blue moon. i can't yet - i drop my son off at school on the way, but once summer hits i may try it. of course when its nice and hot out 🙄.

it'd be 22 miles one way with at least one solid climb. not too shabby. no showers here so it probably be a friday thing after i leave clothes at work to change into on thursday.

anyhoo - i would have to go through manville too but i think i'm gonna take the canal path up through bound brook, then pop to work over the watchungz. i currently drive through manville and that stretch freaks me out thinking if i'm on a bike.

dunno if the work on the manville causeway would prevent me from riding the canal all the way through? could you ride the canal to get where you need to get or is it too far outta the way?

outta the way for me. And the canal terrain is slower than road.

well, if you want to over the summer I can lead you through Manville

maybe its an issue with the bike, i assume its the all city. want to give it to me?

No I'm not kevin.

well the white collar experiment has ended, back to Gotham where being a blue collar keeps me happy. i told my company the other day thanks but no thanks, it really was a depressing job and a lazy job to boot. Hence the heavy boozing and non riding with a shit show of a winter we had. Last week they had me do a small job with my tools and made me realize where I belong.

called my old company that i spent a good part of 20+ years with and will start next week. Commuting by bike will be a bit difficult as I won't have much more then a pole to chain it to but i sure will try to make it work every now and then.

blue collar til death

Well at least you gave the new career a shot, which is never easy to leave behind what you know. Glad to hear you where able to get a job back working with the tools.
Being happy in a job is important, making $$ takes a back seat to happiness. Spending every day doing something you don't enjoy for the sake of making money has ramifications.
Now you have no excuse for being a fat slob...bitch😀

And I will form the head.

This program already exist in the states, however the "pay" is minimal. It is in the same program that provides taxes breaks for using mass transit and if you document that you rode to work x number of times you get something back. I remember calculating the amount when I was riding in a lot and it was something stupid like $10 a month if you rode in everyday.

thanks for the lead.

after a bit of research....

if *your* company has a commuter spending account, then reasonable expenses up to $20/month (pretax pay) can be used against it - so if you are in the 20% adjusted tax bracket, you've saved $4/month....not really a motivator.....

For example: if a bike locker had to be rented in NYC, it could be claimed up to $20/mo - but a car parking space is covered up to $250 ...seems there is a policy issue here.
($50/month to drive, $50/year to bike)

before everyone jumps on the calculations, the focus is on policy that encourages behaviour, not total benefit.....

tax code, good for insomnia

Well if you haven't heard or seen pics of a soundz rescue I am back in Gotham. I don't have the cushy job or bike room I once had but none the less I am back. Unlike Norm I came to realize I like working in the city or that last job really sucked.
Anyhow I am back to outside construction which means mo money mo money! It's physical labor much more so which I like the down side is my bike has to be locked on the street which is a crap shoot.
First day out of the gate I flatted on my way home so I wanted to test soundz rescue line to see if it was still booming. Dude answered second ring, priceless.
As I said I am happy to be back dodging cars, peeps and hypodermic needles. Now I need to stock up on tubes. Speaking of which I came up one of greatest inventions to date I will have to contact norm to man my product sense he will need a job...
