Commuting

Today wasn't too bad until it started to snow half way through my ride. Hopefully it stops and the roads are dry for my ride home.

No way for me. I don't have the gear for an overnight low of 14, high of 21.

You don't have more than one layer? Take what you wear when it is 25 and put a layer below that. Anything with wind protection, including a rain slicker, can be used as your outer layer. For you legs, double up on the tights.

The tights and leg warmers I have aren't legit enough, I already double them up in the 25-40 range. I need to invest in some better leg gear. I suppose I could wear my rain pants. That would be fine for the commute but not the best for a longer ride. Upper body I could probably get by, though I need some better base layers as well. I'm pretty maxed out on my gear budget at this point, so I'll keep an eye for winter stuff on sale to be more prepared for next year.

My biggest issue is keeping my feet warm, I need to get some winter boots. I have shoe covers but below 30 my feet freeze from the bottom up. It seems like the cold just penetrates through the cleat/sole plates.

In the end I don't need to ride in everyday. I love the bike commute but I don't force it, its good to keep a balance. Wearing a dozen layers of clothes ends up being a huge hassle gettings dressed/undressed, finding places to hang it all during the work day, etc..

Well since i couldn't convince anyone to ride with me this morning i ended up doing 2 1/2 laps in the park. I was the only cyclist there go figure. The last 5 miles is where my toes went numb which in turn was unbearably painful once they started to warm up.

Like why i prefer SS for xc i am really digging the SS skinny, quite simple and dummy proof. Next is starting from overpeck park and climbing ft lee with the gearing i have. Of course when it gets a little warmer 😀

Damn, I don't double up on the legs until 10*, need to get yoself some windstopper bib tights. Are you the one that is against bibs (I thought it was one of the Chris's? They are the bestest in the winter as cold air can't sneak down your crack.

You don't need winter boots. Get an insulated insole or put a thin insole wrapped with tin foil. Anything to reflect/block the cold/heat. I don't do chemical warmers until the teens, but found that hand warmer stuck between your toe of your shoe and the bootie work better than the toe warmer that stick to your sock. I did this the past two days and it is the warmest my feet have been in temps like this. Hands are the hardest. Try the rubber gloves against your skin with your warmest glove.

I hear you on the getting suited up and such for commuting, it does take some time.

I've never doubled up tights, but yesterday was the first time this year I actually needed my Tool jacket. 😀

I'm all bibs, that's all I have. But yeah, my tights suck. They are barely lined, more like thick lycra, just cheap tights from Target or something. I wear these over some PI leg warmers. Neither are wind proof. I'm sure I would be fine if I got some decent lined/wind proof tights. Dustin also mentioned swapping insoles the other day, I'll have to check that out. Hands have been alright, I've been using some old snowboarding gloves on cold days. Thanks for the pointers guys.

I was actually too warm in my core on my commute in today -- two base layers and a jersey under a thermal jacket was just too much. I wore thermal windstopper tights, too, which were fine but I rarely ever use them. They're just too much. My legs never get that cold (last night for my MTB ride I used just thermal NikePro tights without the windstopper front and my legs were more than warm enough.) The only problem I had this morning was the exposed part of my face felt like it was being stung by bees the whole way to work and by the time I got to work I had ice coming out of my nose. But that was really the only problem. If I had to go a lot further I might have lost heat in my toes and fingers, but my commute is too short (6 miles) for that to be a big problem.

Long john's, J crew sweater, down jacket. This is commuting right? Not tour de france.

This coming from a guy whos commute is four steps away from his bed and i am sure is working in his underwear 😀

Consecutive commute day no. 124: Ain't nodoby got time for single digit temperature cryin'

^^^^^ insane
I was so close to going for it today but wussed out when i stepped outside and my nosehiars froze together on the way up the driveway. I figured 19 miles each way would be a little more than i wanted to handle at 6am and 10:30pm on my LOOOONG day

Nice indeed i just had a very good run ruined by GWB being closed with last weeks snow. Spylab you rolling fixed?

*edit i see no rear brake so your fixed
