Cutting the cord (this again!)

I'm considering going back to cable, the cost of DirecTV stream is basically the same at this point after all the increases...

We just dropped cable and now have FiOS Internet and a landline. Lost the battle to drop the landline, cause risk adversity... I'm not getting any streaming services but still have Netflix. I have a Roku, should I consider any other dongle like devices?

You have a wired landline?
Wow. What do they cost now?

We just told Cablevision to pound sand. Finally. They truly suck. FiOS unavailable here in S. Edison.

We went with T-Mobile for internet and YouTubeTV. About $140/mo cheaper. no more pixelation, more channels. Got Prime, Netflix and Disney+ adders. So far so good. Will report back after the honeymoon.

I just switch to DirecTV stream.. Youtube TV doesn't have MSG. I'll spend a little more so I can watch my Knicks/Devils lol.

We did this about two years ago. Wife hated the Youtube interface. We both missed being able to just scroll through channels. Then the welcome back offers started rolling in. Clouldn't resist once Cablevision was less money than Youtube. Of course, now two years later the monthly cost has crept back up agin. Time to call and threaten to quit or just switch again for a month. Rinse, repeat.

finally convinced my wife to give up the cable tv (and the landline phone went with it since it was somehow cheaper to have it than to not :shrug: ) about a year ago now;

gigabit fios is ~$80/month, we carry netflix, prime and disney +, my wife signed up for peacock as a temporary thing to watch the olympics and was offered 1.99/month for it when she went to cancel, so will see what happens when she cancels after the promo rate expires. We had all the other streaming servies before dumping cable so the cost savings was $75~80/month. We have also had prime for the other benefits so not sure how to work that into the calculation since its so much more than just streaming.

that landline phone was VOIP - they get money when someone calls you, which is why it is less. They don't want you to actually use it to call out

@qclabrat - did you look at Zoom international calling? use the app and run it voice only? They have a bridge service to connect to phone numbers, so not just app-to-app. It isn't free, but should be very competitive for non-business.

I think it's just best to rotate through all of them. Every winter I get HBO for my bike TV fix, and it seems like every winter there's a 3-month introductory deal (again) for like $5 a month. You can easily swap around 1 service per quarter and probably cut your streaming bill by 75%.

Of course, those of us slaved to the Bezos Prime Fix will always have that streaming option. That said, is it me or is more and more of the shit on that service only available on the premium package?

The streaming price and bundle game is a bit annoying as it is ever changing and even more annoying when it is linked to your cell phone plan or some other promotion. It isn't particularly straight forward (by design).

That seems to be the business plan with everything now. Get you hooked then slowly turn up the dial to get more from you (Strava?)

We have Xfinity 500mbps @$65/month. We’re still evaluating regular TV Chanel options as my wife kinda wants them back. Our add-ons include Netflix, Max, Disney+, AppleTV+, Peacock and Prime. At about $130/mo all in, we are about $100/month less, but I think we may pare it down.

Comcast raised the price again for basic cable - so for 185 channels plus internet, most of which I only watch four channel and zero sports I was $221 a month. Xfinity told me this is one of the cheapest bills they have seen in a long time - I don’t buy it but maybe I am more analog then I think.

After an agitating day at work I figured I was ready to go to Xfinity in Manahawkin, because let’s get honest - the call center is useless and they purposely put you in a loop of entering your info over and over to get you no where hoping you hang up and self diagnose. And no I do not want another “app”

The tech was helpful, I shut cable off and it put my internet to $123 a month. Tech told me if I come back next month a promo will be sent to me to bring that down to $105 for internet. I have a feeling I will shop that.

Frankly, the TV channels that come with the internet are fine for me. I felt like a failure at first for being an 80’s kid without my beloved cable - but now I feel like I have been throwing that money away for years.

Hoping to go spend my savings on two burgers and a beer at happy hour this evening and watch their TV. The boys will get over it.

$40, anyone using IP phones? My in-laws use theirs for international calls and they pay about $50
I have been using Google voice with OBI devices since a decade now, totally free. But those devices are not sold anymore I think, Obi was bought over by Polycom.

Xfinity is now in Edison! They have been putting up the lines and appointments are available at some locations. Its good to finally have some competition here!

For local TV channels, earlier the secret was to add a splitter to your cablevision line and plug it in your TV, you would get all the free to air channel without any cable TV connection. Other option is to have an antenna and get all the local channels for free, surprisingly good quality on them!

i mean, DUH on the first part, how else would it work with only a fiber line running to the house?

the part that baffled me is how internet+tv = (for example) $200, internet+tv+phone=$150 (i dont remember the exact numbers anymore, but it was significant, we never hooked a phone up to it either)

i have one of the polyconn OBI boxes sitting in a drawer that i never hooked up, got it on sale when we were dumping the landline since the wife was certain she would miss the landline (even without a phone hooked up to it? girl logic at its finest here??? not really sure)

you are the one that referred to it as such......

about the discount, on the back end, any call terminating or attempting to terminate at that number pays a fee. it is fractions of a cent, but with all the wardialing and telemarketers, any connected phone makes money for the end point. They know your phone isn't connected, so it lets it ring, sending it to generic vmail which probably doesn't take a message, cause it isn't setup. Still a connected call.

More info here.
