Dragons are F'ing Awesome

I thought of Norm yesterday at Sourlands.

I'm appalled reading that you "went to the store, then made pierogies." If they were Mrs. T's I'm even more so. Unless Mrs. T is Mrs. Tabbit, then that would be different. After eating our famous pierogies you should never be able to return to store-bought again. Speaking of my family, I let them know that multiple friends were disappointed in us this year. Hopefully I can persuade my Babcia to fill me in on her recipe & we can make them. I can't let you eat that crap anymore.

Friday

It was Friday, the start of my Julia weekend. And what better way to start the weekend than to go to a Daisies (mini girl scouts) art festival. Sounded like a good idea. So I said sure, I would take her. Little did I know that things would break down like this...roughly:

35 moms
115 girl scouts
1 dad

So by my rough estimate, there was 1 guy and 150 girls. We were there for about 2 hours, which had it's ups & downs as one can expect with a gathering of this sort. She had a good time but by the end was exhausted. She came into the weekend really tired for whatever reason.

She had a rainbow put on her cheek. This took a while to get off:

Saturday

Went to a birthday party for one of her friends which was smack dab in the middle of the day. I'll be honest, this was pretty boring. The artfest the night before was a little...uneven...but at least I had something to do with her most of the time. At the birthday party the adults were just more or less cast aside and stood in the corner. I didn't really know anyone there, and again was the only dad save for the birthday boy's dad. So it was pretty much like some sort of Guantanamo Bay isolation chamber.

No bike Friday, no bike Saturday.

Sunday

My parents came down late morning and we went to Panera for lunch, which we always do. Then in the afternoon they watched J while we snuck out for a quick hour on the road. It was windy, but it was also 52 degrees or so.

That evening was a kids free night so we made some dinner and had some wine and did some things around the house. We always plan to do all sorts of things and somehow the day gets away from us. I guess time really does fly when you're having fun!

Monday

I was off but Andy had to work so I stuck around the house and did things that needed doing. I did get out for another ride to scope out some new loops around the house. All this moving around requires me to redefine how long I think it takes to get from point A to B and so on. Well, A to B is the same, but when you're now going from A to C, the times in your head start to get a little vague.

Andy & I both had some sort of low-grade cold going on yesterday. I'm sure my going out in the sub-freezing temps helped my cause.

Today

WFH today though I almost called it a sick day. Woke up at about 5:00 with a fever but just laid in bed for 2 hours not wanting to move and admit that I had a fever. Eventually Andy woke up and got me some Advil and I just laid with my head on her lap for a bit. Shortly after that it got considerably better. By 9:00 it had broken and now we're back to the low-grade headache and a little bit of congestion.

That reminds me I need to take more Advil & pseudo-ephedrine.

Liverwurst & Prime Numbers

You know, I think when you have a testicle operated on and then you vomit on the side of the road a few hours later, it's going to qualify as a crappy experience. So maybe the whole experience really wraps up into that point on the list.

Not so bad as being stabbed, admittedly.

I like the idea that I will only ever work on prime numbered floors. Maybe I'll aim for the 53rd floor someday.

The Yellow Chair

We will have at least 1 yellow chair on the party date. We may have more. We're involved with talks to perhaps obtain a 2nd and maybe even 3rd yellow chair. That would really tie the room together.

Jake was going to come. Then remembered he can't. I win that bet!

I think there are too many negative connotations to naming our party Normandy. While I guess in a way it is natural, it's also sort of like naming your picnic the Dresden Bomb Raid BBQ.

I dub this next party, The Second Yellow Chair Gathering.

Pierogies

Yes Mandi...I admit they were Mrs. T's. I reached out to you in the hopes that I could score a plate of the awesome ones from yesteryear. But no, they no longer exist. What's a guy to do? We have to suffer through what we have, which is mass produced product. Really they're not that bad.

If you wanted to figure out the secrets of the trade then have a pierogi-making gathering, I'm sure we could work something out. I'm game!

Clothes

Super awesome benefit of having Andy be the same height as me? I can pretty much fit into most of her clothes. As handy as this is when I want to wear a skirt and high heels and I just can't find mine, it comes in really handy when a base layer is in the wash or my heavy jacket is at the condo. This came in handy this morning when I didn't have a heavy jacket and it was 18 degrees out.

I believe Team O has this benefit as well as Erin & Ang? I have to say I like this. Plus, on my WFH days I can experiment on making myself look pretty with nobody around to really pass judgement.

This Week

Tonight we're both still sick plus we have to pick up the Subaru from the dealer.
Tomorrow we both have kids so it's no riding for anyone.
Thursday I may get out assuming this cold/flu doesn't last.
The weekend is almost totally free. Plans still TBD but lots to do!

Sometimes it's good to not have plans. Saturday is a double day. I think we plan on waking up, eating some meals, going for a bike ride, and then going to sleep. Aside from that I think it's entirely open.

pictures of you in said skirt and high heels when you CAN find them?

Par-A(ndy)-Normal II

That's the best I got.

Barring the sitter falling through, we'll be. Wine, yes, yellow chair, not likely.

I know how you feel about liverwurst prolly the same way i feel about slo gin rock and rye southern comfort and jack daniels.

i remember when i first started working in the city i had an interview with the Lord Group working on Cannon. the account was awesome since at the time if you wanted a picture of something you either had to a) draw it or b) take a picture with the only consumer device capable of doing so- a CAMERA. anyway, they were on like the 60th floor or something and all through the interview all i could manage to concentrate on was the building. swaying. back. and forth. back. and forth. back. and forth. i thought i was going to DIE.

they invited me back for the final round and i bailed. there was just NO WAY i could work on a floor that high. ultimately i ended up at Ogilvy & Mather, playing not a small part in that decision was the fact that they were on the 6th floor.

it certainly wasn't working on Huggies and Baby Wipes that wooed me there.

and yes, you win the bet fawker. but you still haven't been to my house for dinner and i invited you LONG before Normapalooza or the upcoming and aptly named event:

my wife worked there - what years were you there? she took off and caught the .com wave and rode that (moving to double click, digitas and a couple others) until the bubble bust after 9/11.

i was there early- like '96 - '99. what did/does your wife do? right before the merger with JWT and the creation of Mindshare. i liked it there but all my friends were jumping ship to other agencies for more money so i followed suit and went to Deutsch where I sat right behind Donny's secretary about 30 feet from the man himself. the sh!t that i saw working there...my god.

son of a b. she was there in '99 definitely. i think she worked on amex and seagrams, and maybe miller when she was there - but that may have been double click? i'll have to ask her. after 9/11 she went back to school and became an english teacher, but now she's home with the kids.

the show mad men was made for a reason. she told me of many friday mornings where she'd have cases of booze waiting on her chair when she came in. and then many people being sent home by lunch because they were useless at that point.

ha! no way. if she was in media i may have known her...never worked those accounts though...but know people that did. when i left i was on IBM...and not the good IBM. servers and storage. all trade, no consumer. bleh.

i haven't watched a single episode of mad men but the mid 90's (i know mad men is WAY earlier) in advertising was just INSANE. she's not kidding about people being sent home (or at least "left alone") after lunches. i can remember so many times passing out at my desk.

Don't forget to shave front and back before putting on a thong.

If pierogies are being made somewhere I'll take a batch 😀 I'd also love to learn how it's done. Actually we still have a bag in the freezer from Christmas Eve. My wife's grandma is from Slovakia and she makes them by hand. After her I don't know who else is still doing it that way. My great grandma from Poland did, but she's long gone.

Wait, is advertising awesome enough that you're allowed to drink at your desk? Or so terrible that you can't make it one full week w/o getting sloshed on the job?

Sick

Still sick. I don't like being sick. I used to know a few people who I think actually enjoyed it, as it allowed them to lay in bed all day. I wouldn't be in the office today if I didn't have to be. But my boss's boss is in town, and he's our new overlord. So I have to be here.

We met with him for 45 minutes or so. He's from the UK but I had met him before. It went well. I have no idea how things are going to shake out here in the months to come with the whole merger. I plan to work until they tell me not to work.

My boss is in town next week. Again, no idea if he will be bearing good and/or bad news. The Chicago guys aren't real thrilled. They think that office is going to close down.

No Bike

Anyway, I'm sick. I'm not biking until the weekend. We have a free weekend and I want to make sure I get to it feeling good. Andy has done her best in the past few days to make me feel better. But having to come into the city is a bit exhausting. Everything is really in my head and sinuses today, which often means that it's nearing the end. But I'm taking off the bike for the next 2 days so I get to the weekend as healthy as I can.

Tonight is Julia night.

Tomorrow would have been a possible bike opportunity but I'm just going to take it easy and rest up. And not ride in these brutally cold temps.

Jake & Dave

Oh hey you guys could chat about this at the Second Yellow Chair Event.

Oh wait, Jake isn't going...

It's Deux, btw.

Pierogis

I've seen those peirogies Iggy linked in the store. Actually the SR in Bernardsville has them. I did see them the other day and thought about it. I've had them before and seem to remember them being tasty. Maybe next time.

For now, I wait for Mandi to bring us fresh ones. I do have to admit they were awesome.

What do You Take?

When sick, my lineup generally consists of...

1. Advil
2. Pseudo-ephedrine
3. Halls cough drops
4. Hot tea

Beyond that, the couch.

Pic

On the path into the city. I'm breaking the rule of thirds here but cut me some slack, it's an iPhone...

we're slovak so we get the home-made pierogies at christmas also. apparently the deli next to Marty's (in Randolph) has amazing ones too. i forget the name but it's so blatantly slovak/czech that it's redonkulous.

the answer is both.

Neti pot yo.
And you have to snort in the water and spit it out. None of this pu$$y "flow in one nostril and put the other" shit. Snort it through, spit it out, and be disgusted while looking at all the crap that comes out.

When sick
Vitamins a-c-e
Zinc
Goldenseal
Chew clove of garlic 3x day (careful when around people)

All major immunity builders, well garlic just burns the shit out of the germ.
