my shameless plugs haven't even begun yet. but trust me, when i get a bit more dialed in here, i'll start a running thread so that everyone knows we're giving things away.

membership? i don't know. the first person i ever remember referencing using mapmyfitness (or more specifically, mapmyride) was Vreeland.

You forgot one:

21. I flexed, shirtless, in the Port Authority bathroom and got caught by a friend.

So Andy has been riding the road bike with flats? And keeping up on the A- HG ride??

I FINALLY took my own street away from Joe J after a year...that said im sure he can take it back whenever he feels like it.

I just put a new BB in Joe's bike so his KOM count is gonna go up.

Joe is a good kid, we sponsor him and his brother. They were new additions to our "Elite" team to help Mike G in the Garden State Cup. He trains with Cody, who thankfully doesn't post his rides to Strava otherwise we'd all be fucked. Damn, neither does Mike for that matter. So just imagine there are 2 people over whoever has the current KOM and move your place down accordingly.

-Jim.

Sorry for the hijack Norm

I mad at segundo for taking one away like the next day. He pretty much rode to it and went home.

That's not true! I didn't target YOU specifically and you know it. I wanted to do a short/intense session, which is what I normally do during the week, and you brought this course to my attention, which is right down the hill from my house. So yes, I wanted to go and kill myself on those climbs but no, I wasn't targeting you specifically.

The funny thing is you brought me into Strava 2 weeks ago when you were bragging about the KOMs you took back from Woody and some other people (http://www.mtbnj.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11656&page=63). That day I was checking your Tour de Fat thread because I was looking for a ride to hitch on, to pull me longer than what I normally ride. I even texted you to see if you were riding that morning and, when you told me no, I told you I was going to try to figure out a way to the course you posted, You did mentioned "and what snag my KOMs. Good luck those 2 hills are killers" but honestly, I thought you were joking.

And yes, I rode to those hills and back home since this course gave me three killer hills in 1 hr of exercise without getting into the car and without riding on streets with traffic.

... Anything i get incorporates a real ride, silly i know but i find it annoying. ...

Looking at Strava I see that your distance, time & elevation gain TYD are between 4 and 5X mine, so I can see your perspective. However, what is a "real" ride is subjective and different for everyone. For me, my rides are pretty "real" (hard). Also, since can't devote more time to riding I try to go as hard as I can in my "short" week rides. BTW, the ride in which I took your KOMs was actually on the longer side of what I do during the week.

If you want to compete only with comparable/"solid" rides, then when you define your segments, you could clarify "followed by a 20+ mile ride" or something like that. Or, just define 20, 30 miles segments. Or just filter me out by weight or age.

There's no "KOM with solid ride" or "KOM on SS" or "KOM more than x lbs", etc etc. There can only be one KOM for a segment and as long as you ride the segment in a bike, it doesn't matter the rest of the ride, how many gears you have, your age, your weight or anything else.

... Maybe i will drive down and ride that section till its impossible for him to beat ; )...

If you don't consider my rides "worthy" of the KOM, then just don't pay attention and you know in your mind you are the KOM for that segment. If you care enough about the segment, by all means, drive down (or ride down from your home, same as me) and ride it until you get it back. Since I do 90% of my rides alone, this will make it interesting for me 🙂

Segundo you know i love you i dont have smiley faces on my tapatalk otherwise there would have been a half dozen in there. Thats what strava is for fucking with the competition : ) : ) : )

You're killing me. I thought you were really mad at me 😱 Anyway, after SSaP I'm up for some KOM hunting AND long ride with you on my SS during the weekend 😉

Welcome to the vortex that is strava.

I like the numbered list thing, especially since I have so little time:

1. I was in a really shitty mood today
2. I just ate a handful of chocolate chips
3. I like Ilya's idea to do a team thing at his house in the summer
4. Matty will yell at me if I fail to say that he has offered his house & pool for the same
5. I went to a Watchung Wheelmen club meeting tonight
6. Strava should be for cat 3 races and under
7. Until all the cat 1/2 guys start using it, then whatever
8. MapMyFitness was underwhelming
9. Sorry Jake
10. I have never flexed in Port Authority nor in front of Jake, shirtless at least
11. Andy had flat pedals on the MTB. Now she has taken over Ted
12. Joe J did not go to the WW club meeting, nor did Jim V
13. I did see Jim V however
14. He looked sexy
15. After this post I am going to have a glass of wine
16. I have to be in the city today, tomorrow, and Friday
17. I was supposed to go in yesterday too but I got out of it
18. I can't fathom how I went into the city 5 days a week every day for years
19. I read about 1/20th now of what I did then
20. Pearl and I share the same sadness about losing McCheese
21. Eric & I came up with an absolutely brilliant idea for Mooch Madness this year
22. It involves real death

Ok, that is all.

This was me on the 3 mechanial day:

You have surprisingly little hair above your elbows. I think it would look extra odd in the PA bathroom mirror.

I too have that bare patch...amongst others. Norm and I have similar genetic tendencies. At least when it comes to hair.
I was going to ask what you ride mtb with Andy adopting Ted, but like many on this site, you'll just use something else you own. Didn't know she was that tall, though. Platforms forever!😛
happy belated birthday to Julia. My daughter is actively seeking kids to invite to her shindig this summer. Even if they just met in the line for ice cream. She really wants a sibling, apparently.

Strava, like clipless pedals and road biking, is one of those things I never thought I'd get into. Now I'm really entertained and yes, motivated by it. Which I guess is the point of the exercise? Moving up in the standings doesn't hurt either.
That said holy crap is premium expensive! Spoiled by $2.99 apps, I figured I'd throw them a bone and go premium, even though I'd use exactly none of those features. About 7/8 of the way through I looked at the total and X'ed outta there pronto. I'd be happy to pay something but damn that was harsh.

Did item 2 improve item 1?

I was just having a conversation with a buddy of mine about Strava yesterday evening. He uses it all the time and creates segments every time we ride together. He loves it, but gets frustrated when people take his KOMs away from him. I told him that's why I'll never use Strava. I just don't want to get caught up in it because I'm trying to be less competitive. As it is, if I see riders ahead of me on the trail, I feel like I have to try to chase them down every time. I'm not trying to be a d-bag with that -- I think I'm just pretty much as dumb as a dog and it's like other riders are the cars I need to chase. If I were using Strava, I think I'd spend every waking moment trying to chase KOMs.

snip..

, I think I'd spend every waking moment trying to chase KOMs.

can totally see this^^ - even more for the ultra competitive.

my take is slightly different. it is more of a golfer against the course, and this allows comparison to my peer group (overweight & overage) - occasionally will try where the segments are, but the more interesting stat is looking at each of my rides/attempts and check the dates to make sure the results are directionally correct.

got a bunch of ideas on how to improve on the segments (no my riding, just the classification/interface) - but that will require an NDA and BEER.

that being said, i'm going to move up the zion leaderboard this year......😀
at least a couple of new PRs...

1. I'm all about numbering these days
2. I'm surprised Walter's plumbing thread has not gone too south
3. Yet
4. We're coming up with the most awesome Mooch Madness idea EVER
5. Andy is almost as tell as I am. If she wears heels, she towers over me.
6. Andy wears heels when she makes sushi
7. Not all points 1 through 6 are true
8. MapDeezNuts didn't allow me to mass upload without Garmin Communicator.
9. It wasn't obvious what the benefit was, like where is this KOM area?
10. Too many activity types to choose from
11. 2 in combination with 15 helped item 1 a little
12. Today is better than yesterday
13. The WW meeting last night was really good. We're going to start a partnership of sorts with them. They will be using our board to disseminate ride information and they will have their own sub-forum here
14. I'm going out after work to have a few beers with my boss and his boss
15. I had a salad again for lunch today
16. Going into the city isn't cheap
17. I'm reading Next by Michael Crichton. So far I like it.
18. We have a release today, and it's looking like it's going to be a long one
19. I have not ridden since Monday and will possibly not ride until Sunday
20. I found a cruiser bike in the garbage a few weeks ago. I pumped up the tires and it's perfectly fine. I ride it to the park
21. I'm going to Baltimore early next week and have 2 days off to just ride my bike
22. I'm hoping to do something epic
23. Michael Jordan was #23

That's all.

walt's thread... having worked in the hardware store for years, with lots of retired older guys and vets, the poop jokes were endless.

while in baltimore, visit the aquarium if you have time. it's pretty fancy. in the good way.

speaking of fancy and keeping it up with lists, i learned this in high school.

2 rules of life:

1. no gettin' fancy.
2. no bustin' in the pants.

keeping to those rules have gotten me to a decent spot so far.
