Frenchtown Preserve Conditions

Hi all, we got hit with some severe weather today in Frenchtown. Multiple trees down in the Frenchtown Preserve. Please consider riding elsewhere until we’ve had a chance to clear the issues. Please do not build go-arounds. The trees will be cleaned up.

Where was this posted? I was a mess last night. I circled around Kingwood for over 2-hours trying to get home.
It took my husband over two hours as well, circling in Kingwood, probably right behind you.

I cleared blue from end to end this morning. I only have an electric trimmer and handsaw. But I was able to move all the big stuff without cutting. At least Blue is in good shape now. Yellow 'up' is clear. But two big trees down along yellow that parallels the creek. Need a chainsaw for those.

If anyone clears Red or Orange, please post. If no one does, I'll try to get out there again in the next few days.

@chemgirl I appreciate the effort on the small stuff. It’s very time consuming and time has been at a premium recently. Keep going when you or anyone else has time with the small stuff and the “hangers”!

The larger stuff will be cleaned up by the preserve’s managing body, please do not bring heavy equipment out there. There are some very dangerous trees under pressure that could snap back and cause injury or worse. We really don’t want to see anyone getting hurt. There is a mandate by the state of NJ that anything over 8” in diameter will be take care of by the state, or the Environmental Commission. The most helpful thing for large trees right now is pointing them out on the map so we won’t have to go searching for them. Chris is aware of the ones on Yellow. If any others are spotted, please let us know on here or reach out to the Frenchtown Environmental Commission. Thanks!

The state will do it if it isnt state property?

Curious where this mandate is and what the scope is. I have not heard of such. I'd drive down to spend the day and lend a hand if my knee had no issues.

I was able to get a copy the Management Agreement for the Frenchtown Preserve today. Y’all are correct, there is nothing in it regarding a mandate about fallen trees or the size each party is responsible for clearing.

I was told (a few years ago) by the previous chair of the Frenchtown Environmental Commission, and I’m paraphrasing, “If the fallen tree is big, the state (being D&R) will come in and remove it.” I asked at the time what was “big” and he said, “anything over 8” in diameter”.

So sounds like y’all are correct and it’s not a mandate and might be either some verbal agreement that the FEC had with D&R or maybe just something, at the time, to keep me in check so I wouldn’t be overstepping or getting injured myself.

That said, if you wanted to clear the large trees that are down, please contact the Borough and get approval first. See photo of the section 6C of the management agreement.

Lastly, there are already those who have approval by the borough to do maintenance of the preserve and do a great job. My point wasn’t to get into a discussion about the management agreement (though I’m happy to do that. I’m always up to learn more about it) but expressly, to make sure someone isn’t going out there with a big chainsaw and cutting a big tree down on their head.

I was able to get out for a ride at the preserve this evening. The big trees on the west side have been taken care of. There’s one more new one down on Orange near the cedar bridge but only slightly poking out into the trail. Very easy to ride around. Another rideable tree down on Googlymon. The stilt grass is getting pretty hairy on the east side so be careful of pedal grabbers. Didn’t check all of Yellow by the creek. Not sure of that status. Hope y’all are rippin it up! Here’s a pic from my trip to CO last week, just for fun.
