Garmin Edge 705 and Mapping Software

For the Edge series all you have to do is drag and drop the GPX file into the GPX folder when your Garmin shows up as a drive on your computer. Then it shows up under "saved rides" on your device.

Good job on the CR mapping. How long did it take you? Definitely post it to the wiki 🙂

A few hours, I don't even remember as I did it a while ago. I need to make an update or two then I will post it to the wiki. I'll leave a teaser here for now.

Is there a limit to the number of saved rides you can store on the garmin? And can you color code the lines somehow?

That sounds a little more manageable than what I have now. I have the same data in at least 3 formats: ArcGIS, Delorme, and KML or GPX. It gets annoying!

There is a limit on how many you can "turn on" and you can color code each GPX line.
Use the "show on map" feature

Yea so let's say if you wanted to color code each of the CR lines in a different color, you would have to make 4 different gpx files and click on the "show on map" for each of them.

Not sure about how many you can load, but I imagine the Garmin will die trying at some point if you don't run out of storage space first - not sure if you can load the GPX file to the SD card. When I click on "Saved Rides", it has a little pause and saying "reading" or something like that.

I have confirmed that you can load the GPX file to the SD card. All you have to do is create a folder called /Garmin/GPX/ on the SD card.

Yeah I do that, but the garmin works much faster if you have no sd card. I think you can only have maybe 8 lines on at once. I reached my limit the other day, hell it might be 4

By limit in the number of lines displayed do you mean there is a limit in the number actual line features that exist within the GPX file that can be displayed at once, or a limit in the number of GPX files that can be displayed at once?

If you have multiple lines in a single .gpx file, they load into the 705 like they were all seperate .gpx files. .gpx is both the line, and the container for multiple lines but the 705 just sees them as all seperate, you won't see the main .gpx that you put them all in, just the single lines.
You can turn a set amount of those lines on at once.

is there a less manual way to removed "saved rides" then deleting them 1 by 1 from the device? i loaded the CR kml, and it created 100 or so different lines there. i removed the gpx file from the folder, but it stays on the device.

I'll see if I can make one that is a single line. That's quite a bitch to have to remove 100 files, sorry about that 😀

I never paid attention since I'm not a garmin user 😀 I'm just trying to share my data wif ma community.

So whats the short answer? I tried merging all of the lines into one then exporting to a KML but the KML still sees it as multiple lines. I'm pretty sure its because the lines are drawn in different directions. And I'm not fixing that 😀

It has to be one single continuous line. Every trail in the park in 1 line

I cant seem to automate that. All of my lines are split at the intersections. I can merge them in my software, but when I export to KML (so I can convert the KML to GPX) it still comes in as many lines.

Yeah, that won't work. You have to start and finish with a continuous line. The merge is superficial, only your mapping program is really interpreting that. Otherwise it's just 2 lines that have a common point.

That's pretty beat on Garmin's part. That is OK for uploading someone else's ride, but it sucks for uploading a whole trail network.

When I merge a line it's a true merge unless I'm trying to merge two lines that share the same end point, then it doesn't work out.

I just picked up a 705. How do I store multiple maps on the GPS? I'm using Garmin MapInstall to load the maps (it came with the Garmin Topo DVD). I also have the Topo 24K Northeast and the cloudmade NJ maps, and I would like to load them all and use the GPS menu to choose which one to display. But every time I load a new map it wipes out the exiting one instead of adding additional maps. I'm sure I'm doing something stoopid. I'm not even close to exceeding the amount of onboard storage, so that's not the issue. Also my microSD card is completely blank if that matters.
