Garmin Edge 705 and Mapping Software

Importing gpx file and following them is possible on an iPhone. Following GPS tracks is a good experience as long as you have a good cell signal. You will need to get an app that allows this like MotionX GPS. Some things to remember about the iPhone:

1) no cell phone signal = no gps
2) it's more fragile .. having said that i mount it on my bike even in sub-freezing and drizzling weather and it hasn't broken
3) it's much less accurate in terms of mph, distance & elevation
4) no cadence or heart rate

Soundz good, thanks for your input...

Thanks for the input guys, I just ordered one..😀
Now I have to learn how to use it and upload maps ans stuff.:hmmm:

Is the 605 or 705 a good purchase if i am looking to get it just for navigation purposes? are the trail maps accurate?

i really wouldnt be buying it for the training features. all it would be is a plus.

I would like to go to some trails and not have to concern myself with making it out alive....

Then you want the 705

What would the 705 give me different in terms of navigation that the 605 wouldnt? I was under the impression the difference was the 705 came with HRM and cadence. And a few other 3rd party bells and whistles.

My main / real question, is are these good trail navigation devices, or is it really meant for training?

For example. If i went to, say, Allamuchy (or any trail system for that matter) with one of these for the first time, would it be able to help navigate the trails?

I dont want to have to leech off one of you mopes every time i want to learn a new trail 🙂

I had a 305 and I used it for the same purpose that your saying. It's hard to ride and watch a GPS to see where you're going and not recommended to try, but it works that it has a breadcrumbs type thing that can get you back on the trail or at a fork in the road let you know where to go and such. And I'm assuming that either the 605 or 705 will be even better at that.

As far as navigation, the 605 and 705 do the exact same thing and will give you exactly what you want. There's really no comparing the mapping capabilities of the 305 and 605/705.

My wife just got me the 605 for my birthday. I've only got a couple rides w/ it. So far its great! I don't intend on doing any hardcore training so the 605 was exactly what I needed.

Just tonight i uploaded some topo maps w/ the help of Norms Wiki

Thanks Norm!

and GTlukes Youtube video

Thanks Luke!

Does all the software in the video come with the 605 / 705? Google earth speaks for itself, obviously, but what about the rest?

Does mtbnj have an online database of .dbx files that are already created for some places?

mapsource comes with the garmin yes. we have .gpx files on all the park's pages in the trail directory.

Looks good, I'll try it.
My elevation chart on the 705 has been broken for a long time. Doesn't show the graph.

Can you point me to an example? I see the motion base/garmin connect links for a lot of parks, is this what you're talking about?

Ah, I think they are all just links to motionbased now. In there are links to .gpx files

OK thanks. I have a few complete GPX files for parks like six mile, CR, Hartshorne, and one other I think. Maybe I should post them up on the wiki.

How easy is it to load a GPX into the 605/705? My apologies if this is already posted in this thread, but I'm not reading it all 😀

My delorme makes it a bit tedious, since you have to convert it to their data format then create a "map package" to send to the device. You also have to add the detailed topo maps to the unit (included free on DVD) but the unit itself comes pre-loaded with a very basic map.

How is all of this handled on the garmin units?
