Going Long and Hard.

Start with 30 and decrease until you flat. Install a new tire and inflate 2psi more than that. I've done this and have come up with 26psi front, 28psi rear myself, everyone is different so be sure to do the test.

The Weekend.

Woohoo!! Fun, fun, fun!! Start out with a nice and easy commute into work on saturday morning. Sorta chilly in the morning, sorta, but it was damn nice when I left in the evening. I hit the wall pretty hard on the ride home. I've been taking in between 1,500-2,000 calories all week and my body is finally starting to rebel against me a little bit. My average deficit for the week has been just over 1,000 calories a day. Obviously coming into the Short Track race like that isn't the best idea :hmmm:

Quasi bike porn.

Added some finishing touches to Lori's bike...

And finished building up another pair of King Cross wheels...Pewter hub into a CD Reflex...Came out nice...After building so many Major Toms this season, my opinions of the Reflex have gone very steeply downhill...

Banging out stuff like that wheelbuild on a slow saturday morning is what's keeping me in the lead for the California trip. Everyone else sits around on a saturday and waits for customers to walk through the door, I head upstairs and bang out repairs in next week's schedule. These damn kids have no work ethic anymore 🙁

Even with completely hitting the wall on the way home, I still had a salad for dinner. I'm pre-gaming for tomorrow. I'm thinking about switching over to hay like my bunny. He seems skinny and has a ton of energy...

Sunday.

For some reason I was an hour off this morning. I meant to leave the house at 6 to get to Mooch by 7 but somehow left at 7 and got there after 8. Not sure where I went wrong. Packed the bikes and the cooler with PowerAde and some back-up veggie food just in case. I've been to far too many outings where I've had nothing to eat. With the talk on the other thread with the amount of meat wrapped in meat then cooked in meat with glasses of meat to drink, packing an extra MetRx bar or 2 seems like a safe bet.

The race? Apparently there was a race. I would take part in no such activity. The fact that I may or may not have had a number on my bike is irrelevant. A) I need food, I feel if I put any effort into the pedals I'm going to pass out. B) Luckily my calf is still jacked so said effort isn't possible anyway. C) Dave purposely crashed into me on the first climb and took me out. I had to walk up the hill to be able to remount. See both A and B to learn why I never made that ground back up.

Afterwards, I had a bagel. Food #1 for the day. Yay food!! I planned to hit one of the medium paced rides and play in the woods for a bit. We somehow missed the group and a smaller gaggle of us ventured out on our own. Luke led our ride. I don't know anything about Mooch. It's just a bit too far to hit without an event of some kind. Those that know me will know that I'd much rather put that extra few hours of driving time into saddle time.

Luke split off from us and went out to play with Woody. There's a joke in there somewhere but I'm not gonna touch it. Luke may have though. We followed Dan and some guy on a single-speed with a name I'll butcher if I try to spell it. I had fruit salad and a mini danish thing.

Hung around chatting with many a folk. It's always nice to hang around these people outside of racing. Good times were had by all I'd imagine. I even broke out of my shell and had not one, but 2 normal sodas. Crazy, I know.

Me and Luke goofed around on the silly bikes for a bit. I really like riding my silly bike, I can see why it's all I did for so many years. I feel like I've regained about 3% of my former skill-set. It's sort of amazing how that stuff just disappears. I keep hoping it just clicks over one of these days, but I don't think I ride that bike enough for that to happen. 3-5 hours a week isn't enough.

This firething was kinda fun for what was around. Every time I got on top of it another rock would fall off. It was a bit too sketchy to kick off of, so I didn't. In a previous life, I wouldn't have used that bench to help get up there. With my new shoulder hardware, those days are more than likely behind me for good.

Oh-Totals. I don't know. I rode the XC bike for over 3 hours and the silly bike for some amount of time less than that.

-Jim.

Jim rocks the silly bike!
After a few weeks of being awful at it, I'm understanding just how difficult this activity really is. Jim can actually do stuff, and look cool doing it.

Rotating my bars and flattening my tires helped a lot, <3 Jim. It's hard to pick up pointers when this crap only happens in 2nd world European countries that have since moved onto parkour since they can't afford bikes anymore 😉

Once you learn the rear wheel stuff, you will realize how retarded hard gapping to front wheel is.

Gapping to front wheel came out just after I got out of the scene so I never learned it. I would like to learn how to front wheel up things because that can really open up a bunch of lines I've been eying. There's enough stuff close by that I can get some practice on.

-Jim.

Jim, thank god you were there with your bike....Luke had me convinced that riding trials meant just rolling around in circles and popping your front wheel off the ground a few inches 😉

Really though, that does look insanely hard

Monday.

Like Mr. Poo said in his thread, it's much too nice for a recovery day today!! I went out and did the Rutgers "1st Bridge" ride, if anyone knows what that is. Pretty much just hug the canal out to 6-Mile and then dip back through New Brunswick and the campus. I dip out just before Highland Park and head through Johnson Park back up towards Hoes Lane. It's 100% flat and easy. I think it's like 35 miles or something. Just about 2 hours at a human pace.

Definitively feel pretty run-down today. The wife and one boy is home for Columbus Day. We picked the other one up early and headed out to the pumpkin patch.

Halloween is my favorite time of year. I love going out to the farm and doing the corn maze, hunting for a good pumpkin to slaughter, eating awesome homemade farm food. This year I got a pile of pumpkins to carve. I have a pretty cool idea that I hope doesn't end up becoming pie.

314406_2512842782359_1291834825_3084418_571946125_n.jpg

The maze this year was only about 30 minutes long, and not too complicated. Weak-sauce. I much prefer it when it's long enough to make my wife break down and cry in the center because she thinks we're going to die. So when even she complains it's too short, there's an issue. Gotta find a bigger one before the season's over.

The rule is, you can pick anything you want as long as you can carry it out on your own. Ethan always tries to cheat the system, needless to say, he didn't make it very far. Of course with the pile I picked for myself, it's pretty easy to see where he gets it from 😀

Eric doesn't try to push it. Wimp.

That is all for now. There's some sort of CX workout something or other on the plan for today. I have no time to goof around in the grass so I'll be on the road. Commuting. And possibly going hard up Washington Rock and Stirling Road. I sorta feel like I was hit by a truck, or deer, so who knows what will happen in real life...

So in other words, a little less than 30lbs until 3 years from now when I may have to change the tire then call you cause I'm not going to glue these things. Got it thanks!

Tuesday.

Norm nailed it. Expect there was no pumpkin pie. I almost ended up as pie today. I'm somewhat sure I'm not nearly as delicious as pumkin pie.

Truth be told, my diet for the past week and change has been very slim to say the least. Yesterday I woke up starving. When that happens I need to hold out a bit before I eat breakfast otherwise it doesn't go away and I feel like I need to eat all day. I'd imagine Normie's morning fasting thing I've heard about is the same idea?

Get to the shop and have breakfast. Today was Greek yogurt, one of those little single servings. I'll usually have a second one just before lunch and push my lunch back a little closer to 2 or so. That makes it so I can more times than not skip any afternoon snacks and make it to dinner. That pile doesn't end up being a lot of calories by the end of the day so there's room for when EJP brings in cookies or something. Like I've said somewhere in a previous post, my average has been around 1,500 calories a day. This method works for me, I wouldn't suggest it for others. Your cycling performance will drop straight into the shitter. But you will drop weight pretty quickly. I figure with the few weeks we have off in the cup I'll go big or go home.

Last week was the first week in a long time I weighed myself every morning. I didn't enjoy it. There was a day or 2 in there where I saw 180 lbs. My average for week was 178.5. Shit balls. So far this week I've been at or under 175. At least it's somewhat encouraging to see the scale go south. Kinda makes starving myself a little more rewarding. A little.

If I wasn't a cyclist, I'd be very happy at 170lbs, it's a great weight for me. I have a quasi-beefy build, at least for a cyclist. I'd like to see where I bottom out. I think with the extra hardware, scar tissue, and extra bone I'm sporting these days 155lbs may impossible. 160 may be in the realm of possibility. We'll have to see I guess...

On another note, Mike told me at the picnic that he weighs 170lbs, so there is at least proof that you don't need to 140lbs to be fast :hmmm:

-Jim.

Jim,

I don't want to scare you, but starving yourself and training at the same time is not a good idea. IMO.

If you get a chance have your bone density checked. You'd be surprised. Back when I was young(er), I spent a year in cycling school in France and they had this machine reserved to athletes that would check bone density if they suspected you weren't eating enough. The risk? You know already.

As for diet, I'm probably not a good example but I did see 180 in my days and now am at 145. The key (for me) is riding of course, but also laying off the sweets (outside of riding). Completely. You see a soda, the diet kind included, you leave it there and reach for the water. Cookies/brownies are incredibly sweet and a big no-no. This is very important. They call it "faire le metier" (making your craft).

Before/during a ride this goes out the window, though. Sort of. Eat sweets, but reasonably. You're going to burn them. Stuff like gels are perfect because they're mostly made up of complex carbs. If you don't use them, your body will react, scavenge itself and tend to go into store mode: lose/lose.

HTH

I'm in the lower 150's and only halfast. you don't need to be light to be fast, you need speed to go fast. i'm going to start doing crack.

nice job losing weight porky.

Jim,

I'll tell you what you innately knew when you posted this. By about noon you're going to be sick of people giving you suggestions. But if you post on the Internet, this is what's going to happen. There are days when I wonder why I posted. Today will be that day for you.

Having said that.

Maurice said a few things I would have said, though I don't necessarily agree with everything about the sweets. Personally, I find that I can get away with sweets (frozen yogurt, some ice cream) at the end of the day when I still have 1500 calories of debt. If I eat "crap" mid-day, things get really much more difficult. Like Maurice says, that includes any drink that is sweet - diet or not.

On that note, look at the nutrition of the Greek yogurt versus ice cream. There's a little more protein in the Greek yogurt. But it's probably closer than you want. I love Greek yogurt but I eat the non-sugar kind. I don't think the little fruit cups of yogurt are a good idea, personally.

As odd as it sounds, I'm going to turn the tables on you here. For the past few months, I've been pretty much preaching to myself "separation of church and state" which is something you said in regards to food a while ago. I eat what I need to for the biking part of the day. Then I dial it back. I don't eat a lot of food during work hours, and I get a little hungry at first but it works out.

No fasting for me. I do find that if I don't eat from when I leave the house to about 10-11, I do better during the day. I think the Paleo Freaks call it IF (Intermittent Fasting) but I think of it more as SMAS (setting my ass straight). If you eat the proper bike food (before/during/after) your body is going to want to rage right on through the day, and before you know it you've got this Dagwood Sandwich that's as tall as DeNoma* starting you in the face for lunch.

Anyway, random thoughts from a guy who isn't thinner than Maurice. I know the thin guys say that losing weight is easy. But tall guys also say that dunking a basketball is easy. For those of us who struggle to lose weight, it's usually a little more complex. I'm not going to say you should do A-B-C but I will say that you probably need to figure out why the method you're using isn't working, or what the RCA** is. I've rethought my eating & weight loss process and I'm aiming for Pearl's 165 for Battenkill next year. I'm not there yet though, so take it for what it's worth.

Ok conference call now. Eat an avocado over Greek yogurt.

* not that he's tall or anything.

** Root Cause Analysis - sorry, Dork Speak

TEN is god damn awesome. I brought some to the picnic 😀
This has been my secret for years. When I have a soda fountain available. I fill the cup 95% with diet coke and put a shot of something else in. Like Barq's, or Dr. Pepper. Sounds weird but it somehow transforms the entire cup into Barq's, and doesn't taste much like diet.
Probably the same thing or less, 90% of the calories and tastes awesome.

I can't help with dieting, I somehow defy all logic. I eat like a million calories a day and lose weight, and I don't ride nearly as much as you guys.
I also don't sweat, and I was talking to Jim about that at the picnic. Jim sweats like a crack whore in confession.
