Going Long and Hard.

I did Cie's Class. She's the President of JSSKA now so I just messaged her on FB to schedule a Class being I'm a Club Member already. It's technically an ACA Course so maybe there's info there? I also found one that Kayaks East hosts at Spruce Run. It's really good to do. I've been really good at avoiding ending up in the Ocean, but it's coming.

Open water is definitely a whole different ball game. Feels like riding a bike on the Turnpike the first time. Nothing on the planet will make you butt pucker like being passed by a Container Ship in the Channel 🤣🤣🤣

Cie Stroud is great people. Really knows her stuff and a great teach. I used to be an ACA L2 kayak instructor but let that lapse because I didn’t teach enough. Deck lines are very important, especially for rescues and the paddle float re-entry!

Edit: Also meant to ask about the status of your bulk heads? Are the front and rear bulk heads creating a good seal? Because if they aren't then when you get a lot of water into the cockpit, there will be water that goes through the bulk heads into your hatches.

After flipping the boat twice in Maine, and having the boat take on some water, I bought the Neoprene Hatch Covers for this model. My fix was watertight from the top and as long as the boat was upright, upside-down is another story.

Maine was amazing, as always. So much stuff to explore you can spend years and years up there!!

First Day we started in Friendship, paddled out to Franklin Preserve, "illegally" landed on the island, then headed back into the Bay to camp on Black Island. Super dope spot.

Second Day. We took on a big Open Water paddle out to Eastern Rock to visit the Puffin Colony. This was the main focus of our trip. Mark wanted to spend a bunch of time out there to take photos. The fast current, steep headwind, and high swells were at the top end of my comfort level. There was just enough touristy boat traffic that I figured if I went in there was at least someone around. Thankfully it didn't happen.

We spent probably 90 minutes or so circling the island following Puffins. As the tourist boat went to one side they would scare them to where I was so I was literally sitting in the middle of dozens of them. Worth every second of the paddle out.

At our last snack stop on Day 2 I got hit by a wave trying to land and got flipped into the water. Luckily I was at standing level from shore but that water was COLD!! Shivered on the beach for a while before swapping clothes and heading out to camp at Mosquito Head. All in the pics above...

Day 3 we lollygagged a bit. Headed into Port Clyde for lunch and supplies. My phone got submerged so I didn't get too many shots as I was trying to conserve battery.

After lunch we paddled out to Gay Island for the night. It was an actual camp spot so they had platforms. After setting up we went out again to circumnavigate the Island and do some exploring.

I feel your kayaking adventures deserve a dedicated thread. No, I stand corrected, they deserve a dedicated website! Thanks for sharing. Inquisitive minds want to know, did you see any huffin’ or was it only puffin’?

Unfortunately I like taking pictures way more than I like typing so it wouldn't be very interesting. I do try to take pictures that capture the moment well enough that typing isn't that important...

impressive trip!
that is some serious ocean kayaking.
glad you had good weather.
when heading out to eastern egg rock, what was the current and wind directions?
for navigation, charts GPS or both?

Like paddling in a washing machine 🙂

After you pass by Seal Ledge, you can see the Island in the distance so it's easy to Navigate.
