Going Long and Hard.

never take diet advice from anyone fatter than you.

having said that, i think im the only one left.

BTW, I thought the whole fasting thing was counter productive to getting your metabolism up to burn calories? I recommeding drinking Dr. Pepper 10 every 2 hours so you have some calories to burn AND get the added calorie burning effect of the caffiene.

One thing that stuck with me on the dieting issue that an ironman triathelete that I work with mentioned.

He pointed out that a slow metabolism isn't necessarily *bad*. It's actually a sign that your efficiently using your energy. Having a fast metabolism is in essence your body working inefficiently.

You'll need fuel to feed the fire when it's burning strong of course, but some people require less, some require more.

Quick response via phone.

In my post I wrote this is for the weeks before the next CX race. Once we're back I'll resume my normal racing/training diet with an adjustment or 5.

I agree with Maurice about soda, that's something I need to work on for sure. I've made a lot of good changes in my diet this year, but there's still a bunch of room for improvement. Cutting out my epic adventures had a lot to do with my current situation. You don't really need to worry when you're doing 20-hour weeks.

Wednesday.

Well, I don't really have too much to add to the diet thing. Despite how it may seem, I think I have a grasp on what I need to do. For the most part. The thing with dieting, just like training, there's a ton of different approaches and each one claims to be better than the other. My diet is actually pretty good on it's own. We all know I'm vegetarian so by default I cut out a lot of the normal no-no's. I'm also NOT a cheese-eating vegetarian, I actually eat vegetables, and fruit, and I make sure I get enough protein. Since breaking my shoulder, I've been on a fairly stout calcium regimen. Every morning I also take a vegetarian multi-vitamin and vitamin C.

So I think I have the base laid out. I'd like to find a sports nutrition book for veggies, does the one everyone has go through that? Rone has a copy in his office, I'll steal it.

I'll be back later. Gotta get the boys ready, then I'm finally taking a spin on the EVO.

Wednesday, part 2.

Bike porn?

Not really. More like, maintain your bike!!

This is Mike's Cervelo S3. Mike is notoriously bad with keeping his bike clean. I spent a good portion of the day with a drill getting his ferrulles out of the top tube guides. Then I had to drill out the internal cable guide and replace it. His bearings blew apart in the headset and the outer race needed to be Dremeled out. Also had to rebuild both of the Red shifters. I just rebuilt this bike from the frame up earlier this year with almost all the same issues. I believe he has Norm beat 😀

Sean drove up from Delaware to visit. I think Sean is my farthest away customer. Hi Sean!!

After that I headed out to CX practice. Mike was there. I told him to bring a lot of money when he comes to pick up his S3.

Warmed-up for about 1/2 hour before we hit the sessions. First session I felt really good, got a good start, and settled into a nice fast pace behind Mike. It was raining so everything was pretty slippery, which is when I sorta come into my own. Mike went down during the second lap and I rode around him and drilled it to open a gap on him. Held the lead until the false flat near the Hockey Ring on the last lap. I bobbled on the 180 degree corner and Mike came by me. Drilled it to stay on his wheel but there wasn't much course left. I tried to go by just after the little woods section but he pinched me in. Put it all in on the last climb, late-braked him, went wide around him, and sprinted up the hill. Nipped him on the line by a wheel. Good session.

Second session not as much. Legs were still there. Start wasn't as good and Mike got a gap right away. A couple laps in I had to stop to clean my glasses, couldn't see poop. Lose a lot of spots. Same thing another couple laps. Ditch the glasses. Now my glasses aren't foggy, but I can't see anything anyway, I'm blind. Continue around and finish the set still above threshold.

When I got home I could barely walk. My calf still isn't good. Dr. Silberman is coming in this week to pick up his bike I just fixed so I'll ask him about my leg. Last time I had to take off for like 6 weeks or something like that, which I ignored of course. I can only imagine this to be similar.

Thursday.

Bunch of stuff today. Starting with this...

309721_2522980555797_1291834825_3092991_1702861679_n.jpg

I've never seen a picture on my FaceWorld cause such a ruckus!! I've been writing that I have this demo and I've been trying to get out on it. Jesus.

Anyhoo. The EVO. 1 sentence. This is the first bike in the 18 years I've been dealing with Cannondale that ACTUALLY does what they say it does. They nailed it with this one. I've owned a Six13, CAAD9, and a SuperSix Hi-Mod, the EVO is nothing like any of them.

If I had to compare it to something, it almost rides like a steel bike. I was very surprised at how compliant it is. Very comfy. To test said compliance, I couldn't resist getting the thing into the dirt and running it through it's paces. Very stable over the gravel. This is the only carbon bike I've ridden that can hold it's own against my Seven in that regard. So far off from the bone-chattering stiffness of the SuperSix. Downside? It would seem they still kept the fork on the tighter side. Running a 25c tire might not be an option, at least not when it gets dirt on it. Boo.

I ended up ripping my rear tire off and had to get rescued. I believe the bike is going out to Cody today so I'm gonna try to get it back sometime next week for a re-run.

My bigger question. When I had my CAAD9 and swapped it out for the 10x more expensive SuperSix Ultimate, I noticed very little increase in performance for that extra money. I'm now wondering if the same can be said between the CAAD10 and EVO? I don't have any use for another road bike but I'm very interested in putting a CAAD10 through it's paces.

I'll be back later. More bike porn to come...

Thursday Porn, Friday.

Continuing onward to our daily porn section...I had a couple things come through that are pretty fun. Starting with this murderer saddle.

317629_2519879998285_1291834825_3090246_623805256_n.jpg

The rails and entire saddle are made out of carbon with like a 2mm strip of vinyl over it. Super murder. I couldn't make it around the parking lot on it, a little manly even for me.

Had a super-chill customer come in and buy a Karate Monkey from Dennis. When the parts came in to build it he wanted to sit in and watch the process of it going together. I said sure. He watched me build this from the frame up, including the wheels. That little green VW bus I posted some time ago is his.

Wheel porn? Sure. Here's a set that's sorta becoming a specialty of mine. Take a perfectly good set of Reynolds carbon wheels apart, throw away the hubs and spokes, rebuild with Kings and Sapim CX Rays. Why not?

The ride. Just a commute. I got one of those new self-contained Niterider lights. No more strapping a battery to my bike. Somehow I almost got hit twice on the way home though. The first time making a left off Washington Valley onto Washington Rock. I was sitting alongside a car also making a left and a guy tried to come by on our right in the shoulder. That shoulder ain't too wide so I squeezed myself up against the car I was waiting with. Too close for my blood. The second one was coming onto my street. I just went to go across the intersection and some guy at the light cut in front of me. Like a lot. Like he had to slam on his brakes because he drove into the wrong lane and almost hit the car that was waiting at the light there. People are stupid. That is all.

.

And what exactly do people see as a disadvantage of a DT Swiss rebadged hub with Revo's that they want a CK hub with Sapim's? (i.e. same exact cross-section as a Sapim, but $2 more per spoke?)

I'm all for CK, but admittedly a bit confused here.

Interesting that you went elbows out on the front build.
