Hey guys I'm sure you can tell I just registered, my new bike is due for pickup on Monday and as noobie question as it is, here it goes, is one required to wear a helmet on the streets of NY/NJ and trails as well, or is it just a recommendation?

Although it is not required by law in NJ for adults to wear helmet while riding a bicycle, it is a good idea to do it anyway. It's safe to say that 99.99% of the people here on this forum won't get on a bike without their brain bucket and most, if not all, groups would probably won't let you ride with them without a helmet. Also there are events like JORBAfest where you are required to wear one whenever you're on a bike. Speaking of JORBAfest you might want to attend if you haven't done so before. It's a great way to check out some local trails on a guided tour.

In NY helmets are only required for Children 12 or less on City streets and ALL people on any MAINTAINED trail system.

not bicycles...but still applies

remember, you don't have to go crazy with a helmet as far as expense goes - go to your local shop and try a bunch on - whatever fits and is in your budget do the job. it ain't a fashion show.

I have cracked my share of helmets off of trees and rocks. Might I add that I am glad it was not my head. Just wear one. You will fall and you will hit your head. Plus think of being in the middle of the woods with a cracked head. It is not a nice thought.

Welcome to the board.

Helmet while not required is a must. My wife broke her helmet riding on the columbia trail, which is a smooth flat dirt and gravel rails to trails. I have wrecked and rung my bell enough to wear it all the time.

always...even around the block it might be a while but you will be thankful that you are wearing it trust me on this one.

I'm not gonna

I'm not gonna carry your azz out of the woods if you weigh more than 100 lbs. Sorry, I'm just not that strong. :duh:

Welcome, nobody likes a helmet at first. But when you see everyone else, who have been doing this for years wearing one. It a safe bet you need one.

When I see someone riding without a helmet I think to myself "what a dope" what could the reason be to not wear one? Next time your out riding around pick up a nice sized rock or a big ol' tree branch and rub it vigorously on your face and head, maybe even a few light whacks on top of your head. Now imagine that same feeling x's ten. If you're worried about not looking cool, think about how cool you'll look playin with a busy box while someone you love is changing your diaper..... helmets don't really look cool, or feel cool. But for me, just having one on and having just that much more protection, other than just my stupid hard head, makes me a safer and better rider.
The choice is yours.
Welcome.

Thank you all for your responses, I was just asking out of curiosity, I wasn't actually planning on riding without a helmet. Thank you all

I see a lot of little kids in my neighborhood ride their bikes all over the streets without helmets and their parents are right there. I wanted so bad to ream the parents out but I think I just might call my cousin instead. He's a cop in my town and I just might have him come down and enforce the law. :getsome:

Even though this thread should not be this long because all you need to know is to wear a helmet... i will give my opinion anyway:

I always used to wear a helmet everywhere. I then had an accident going off a drop where my helmet instead of my head hit a rock. I realized that WHENEVER i ride my bike offroad, i should wear a helmet. Though, now i do not neccessarily wear it when im riding on the road.
