Gurney Lane

Hey Folks,

Heading up to LG tonight with hopes to ride Gurney Lane with my son. Any clue how the trails recover from rain? Or, possibly a link to a more local source that will have a better understanding?

Thanks

Most trails are on the side of a hill - it does close for mud season in the spring.

So they opened 2 new trails to keep you off the gravel to get to an area of trails in the rush pond area, is that correct? I never adventures down to these rush pond trails will have to check them out.

We just rode there Tuesday, trails were in good shape. As Pat mentions, it's on a hill so the drainage should be good. How much rain they get today is another question.

Gurney drains well. Guess it depends how much rain. I always wait a day or two after heavy rain. Not sure if I need to or not.
Rush Pond (aka Gurney Lane South) is really getting great and the new trails are a nice addition. There's a new unnamed trail marked with blue tape that's awesome. Starts at one on the intersections on the gravel path & goes toward 87. Then loops back. Nice switchbacks. Looks like tic was just built this summer.

Rush pond, wow
Trail building here and gurney are tremendous.
First time in the rush pond section and it's a cross between pump and salom track. Super smooth twisty flow. Threw in some gurney also.

Can't wait to throw down again tomorrow.

3 questions/requests:

1. We stay in Hague up by Ticonderoga, is it worth the trip down? We’ve done Brant Lake Bike Park usually, but interested in venturing down if it’s worth it.
2. If yes, are the trails friendly for a small child (~5 y/o) who is comfortable riding in the woods and can use a Tow-whee well?
3. Loop recommendations for adults sans kids? And also any that would be more kid friendly if applicable!

The place looks pretty flowy!

Thanks in advance!!

For your #1 yes I’d say it’s worth it. I hit Gurney when we stay at Bolton Landing. Half the distance but I’d drive twice as far to ride it.
For your #2, I can’t speak for the Rush Pond area but the Gurney section wouldn’t be suitable for a 5 year old.
For your #3, I’d say hit both sections. Matty’s review above indicates rush pond is fun and I can attest to Gurney itself.

For kid friendly rides in the area I’d try either Coles Woods in Glens Falls (smooth relatively level dirt trails) or the Warren County Bike Path (paved, runs between Lake George village and Glens Falls). Just happens to pass by Dino Roar Valley amusement park if your little one is into Dino’s.

For Coles Woods you can park at the inside edge bike/ski shop.

Definitely worth it. I ride often.
Always have fun. It's not like Brant Lake with that miserable Stairway To Heaven opening climb.
Don't worry about a loop. All the trails are similar and great. Even the ones that say experts only (they're not). Just ride them all. All the trails are short, but you can just hop from trail to trail. I do 10-20 miles there regularly. Both Gurney & Rush are great on a SS, but then again everything is.
Gurney "North" is older and has more erosion. So a bit more choppy, but still very flowy. There's a short green loop next to the bike shop (yes, they have a bike shop) that maybe a 5 yo could do if they can climb a bit. I don't know what 5 yo's can do. There's good playground and a pond that could entertain kids. It's a nice park.
Rush Pond (aka Gurney South) is newer and smoother (mostly). Super fun & flowy, but I think too climby for a 5 yo.

Also, Rush is more sandy and drains faster than Gurney. You can ride Rush right after rain. Gurney might take a day or so, but not bad. I think the only time they close is during the freeze thaw thing.
