Hartshorne Trail maintenance info

We went back to the big sweeping turn we made last week and opened it up even more. After riding it last week it still felt a bit tight, so @don opened up the radius of turn again. This area is tough due to the fact that you carry so much speed into this turn.

After riding it the turn is as good as it can get, just stay high and you'll nail it. This line should firm up and burn in over time. After seeing the old line its easy to see why the turn was getting blown out with breaking, it was way to forced for the area.

We continue our Monday 9am-12pm sessions weather permitting.

I just rode it a half dozen times from different entry points going downhill and a couple times climbing up. It is still pretty soft so the climb is a little boggy but it feels good and it's a steady and not punchy ascent.

Coming downhill that corner works with a lot less braking but still feels tight. It's crazy to think where the old line was and if this was being built from scratch it would be an even more opened up radius. But I think it's a good compromise and keeps the original feel of that section but it just a lot better now. I think with more traffic it will pack a nice line into it.

It blends with the reverse grade that Iggy and the crew put in a couple of weeks ago very nicely now.

The million dollar turn Crew. Thanks guys!

Was there today and the work you've done on that downhill and turn at the bottom is fantastic. Making a great place even better.

This is looking up at the turn.

Nice to hear that feedback - please ride it a bunch to pack in that sandy material!

To the right of you bike where the old trail tread was, Brian and I transplanted a bunch of saplings, moved some duff and just moved some organics to make it blend back in. Brian did a killer job IMO.

Just ahead of your bike is a grade reversal that that was a nice add on to the radius fix. To make sure the water goes off trail we built a little roller. Depending on the speed you carry thru the turn it might be a little tight but it can be used for a little scrub, a quick pump or a start of a manual which I was trying to do in the screen clip below. Once it's a little more firm it should be good to push off of it a little more and hopefully my manuals will be a lot longer!

The whole thing is well planned and nicely done. Should last a long time with the added features to divert water. No doubt that I will ride it a bunch. It is one of my favorite places to ride.

@pooriggy might have some more pics but here are a few I took after a some test laps up and down our TM location yesterday afternoon.

We had a mega dose of help with a crew of 6 coming in from Renova. These guys took to trail working quickly and were very easy to get along with. Suffice to say we got about 3 TM's worth of work done in one.

2 more grade reversal/detours were built in the middle of the slope and linked to the existing trail on either end. As a bonus the Renova crew helped Iggy make some fine tunes to the left hand turn we worked on last week.

First pic is the one after the downhill right hand turn near the top (where the rock wall is). It was a little soft and off camber but still rode well both directions. It will only get better with use.

2nd pic is a little further down and was a deeper bench cut along with a lot of stone (Pic 3) in 2 sections to make a solid foundation on the outside edge and to get the grade correct. @knobbyhead , Brian and I transplanted some nice sized laurels to the old trail. The old trail was encroaching on some bigger tree roots so it was good to add some organics to that area and I'm hoping by next spring it will be hard to tell where that old trail was.

Climbing wise I kind of miss the old steady pace that was there but honestly even soft the new route wasn't bad and it makes it more interesting with some turns and breaks from the grade.

I'm sure some will be bummed about the straight shot downhill bomb feel but man it is way more fun now and with the 2 slight route changes yesterday things line up way better to the top and bottom parts. And there are some natural banks that come into play now and honestly if you don't like the feeling those give you I'm not sure why your would want to ride a mtn bike.

As Don mentioned we had a nice size crew on Monday. Aside from some regulars, Renova Environmental Company joined us. The park system welcomes corporate groups, these days a lot of companies see the value in volunteering and gives employees a paid day to give back locally. If anyone is looking for a volunteer option I can play host to corporate groups. This is a win win, the group is provided with a team building, feel good volunteer session and the Park System benefits from greater numbers coming in to make trails better.

We were able to wrap up the last of the renovations to the red dirt hill section of Laurel Ridge. @don helped manage this big crew and maintain our level of quality work.

The last few grade reversals and tweaks to the wide radius turn really came together when I rode this afterwards. Breaking up the straight line and adding some turns in adds to the flow and creates a much better line then the old one.

Those guys from Renova besides being a great group of positive energy they got so much work done!

Thanks @pooriggy for getting them to help!

Work continues over the winter at Hartshorne. The focus has been on clearing vegetation, which is the ideal time to tackle it, when it's not actively growing.

Some of the problem areas that get overrun with invasives during the summer are the result of vines and plants clinging to deadfall. Clear the deadfall underneath, then the invasives and it's easier to keep the area in check with a brush hog mower during the growing season.

I'd like to see more mtbers join these TM sessions, considering how many people ride here. I have some good stuff planned but could use the help. We work Thursdays from 10am-12pm. We'll start doing Mondays from 9am-12pm as well in a few weeks.
