So with spring comes the annual parade of new trail riders with no helmet. Saw a couple yesterday & so Tom & I gave the lecture in a friendly way 😀

Thought it might be good to have a fresh thread in the noob section to highlight this issue for any new riders to the site, and for any lurkers.

Wear a helmet. Its really not so much that we care about your not becoming a vegetable from a stupid 4mph crash that causes you to bonk your head on a rock, although that is a major reason for YOU to consider.

Its more about the big picture. If YOU don't wear a helmet, and get hurt, and people see the ambulance or helicopter taking yet another injured crazy mountain biker out of the trail, they associate mtn. biking with danger. Other trail users develop a mis-guided perspective of who we are as riders, and what our sport is about. That can limit, reduce or eliminate trail access for those of us who do do it right, and create problems between us & other trail users.

So just wear a helmet. Its just such an easy thing to do that makes such a big difference. Besides...it will cover your bald spot!

I am not an EMT, doctor, nurse. etc. but have seen brain matter dripping out of someones skull and the violent way a human body reacts to such drippings. Please wear a helmet.

I just dont get it. helmets are so light these days you dont even notice they're on.

I started wearing a helmet back in college (early 90s). we were riding at Hartshorne and a freind of mine went over the handlebars and VERY nearly smacked his head on a log (he missed it and was unhurt). but right there we all said - we gotta get helmets.

I guess they think they look cooler w/o a helmet (or that wearing a helmet is lame)...but the funny thing is it quite the opposite - you can always spot a newbie by the lack of a helmet. almost everytime I see a helmetless rider they are going 3 mph on a Walmart bicycle. on the contrary, all the experienced riders are wearing helmets - probably 'cause they've fallen or seen someone fall and realize the need. not wearing a helmet tells me you havent done too much riding.

so if you want to look like you actually belong - wear a helmet. not wearing a helmet makes you stick out...and NOT in a good way.

Right on...and who is most likely to have an unexpected crash & land badly :hmmm:

Agreed....I saw 3 today. They asked me what trails to ride and I asked where their helmets were. In the car we're just getting ready to go....3 minutes later the 3 enter the woods and only 1 wearing a helmet. Oh well

I feel naked without mine....I got ready for a ride this morning and started to ride away from the car....something didn't feel right. Oppps, helemt was in the back seat.

The weight & cooling issues are now non-existent. They are not that expensive and come in tons of colors. There's no reason not to wear one. I guess some people just arent regular riders and don't feel the investment is worth it to them...who knows....one concussion and they'll think twice about it.

"I feel naked without mine...." I had the same experience lately - hoped on the bike and headed for the trail but felt something was missing - forgot the helmet on the car. I seriously wouldnt feel comfortable riding a MTB trail without a helmet.

ask ptb66 me and him came down the orange to go out into the log i almost creamed a dude without a helmet joe said the guy almost went into the tree. just dont get it i did hit a tree but my helmet did nothing for my collar bone so im not gonna wear one anymore

I just tell them that if they are caught w/o a helmet that the park police will impound their bike..

A white lie i know, but by the time they start wearing one they won't go back.

I am sick of seeing helmetless people, even today I see these 2 teenagers riding trying to hold hockey sticks and skates while riding bikes and of course while I am with my kids one loses control and goes down nearly killing himself. Made me want to throw popcorn at him.

You have a bald spot?

Good points, but I like the thin the herd method best,
freedom of choice :getsome:!

Sometimes when I get fat sweat, and a helmet is very uncomfortable.😡

Don't be hating on Walmart bikes,Sam Walton is a pioneer in carbon look technology, I've gotten mine faster at least, once🙂

So todays encounter was at my turnaround point at south middlebush. Just as I am getting ready to head back toward 27 on the other side of the road appears a maybe 17-18 y/o on a 100% beach cruiser non-trail kinda bike. He sees me and is trying to look cool while avoiding eye contact, goes to lean on his bike, and his kickstand  of course goes right into the dirt...so he falls backwards eyes wide in surprise & lands on the bike.

Just after he gets up I yell "Hey buddy...just so you know..if a Ranger sees you riding here without a helmet you'll get a ticket...I think its like $200!" ( I figured his bike was a total piece so Jdogs bike impound tactic would be useless)

What was the reply?

"Thanks...I am riding with a bunch of people who are just behind me and none of us have helmets"

Stupid people should not be allowed to breed.

what the shit man?...seemed like everyone at Allaire today was helmetless.
Saw these two knuckleheads several times....not paying attention nor giving right of way to the approaching equestrian.
