The Train

The trails were too wet Saturday morning so I banged out a tempo ride instead. Did the 3hr. Washington loop deal, I haven't done this since late June. My tempo rides have been primarily in Monmouth County but its good to throw this loop in from time to time to get the HR above tempo on the climbs. My avg. pace was the same as the last time I did this ride but I felt different this time. The difference was the feeling of being able to go deeper longer(TWSS). I could have done another hour.

I want to attribute this increased strength to my interval training over the last 2 weeks but of course that would be too scientific. I'm gonna say I knocked this out with authority cause I had a bowl of Lucky Charms for breakfast.

Soccer

After my tempo ride I was feelin good as I loaded up the cooler with J's drinks and sandwich to head to Randell's Island NY. I was really impressed with this place. It is an oasis in what i consider a shit hole, I can't see how people live in this city. Green acres is the place to be.

I forgot my camera but we are playing there again this Saturday so I'll get some better pics. We lost Saturday to this Manhattan team whose parents looked like models for Banana Republic.

...Mo Train

Sunday I woke up and headed to Ringwood after church with the family. Ringwood is one of myfavorite places to ride, prolly cause I only get up there 3-4 times /yr. I don't think I was here since xc skiing in the winter. I know enough of the place to keep me busy for 2.5hrs so I hit up the good stuff multiple times. This is a good place to work on riding rocks, I felt rusty from too many road rides.

...Mo Soccer

On the way home I met Mary in Morristown to watch J's soccer team get beat again. I hate to loose but I like to heckle ref's when they make bad calls. Other parents started to yell at the ref for missing calls so I chimed in with keg on stilts. That was the best way to describe this guy. It must have got his attention cause after that he told our team to pipe down. Score.

Cycling Tip

I'm gonna throw this in here to give this blog some credibility, but just to warn you I am not going to dispense this kind of information often. The plan is to stick to useless content and entertainment. Sorry for the detour.

Do not let your road bike tires get like this, this is bad.

They should look like this. When they loose there shape as in the picture above you loose the ability to corner and grip the road.

Today

I took off from work today with plans to go to Wayway to check out the race course. The weather foiled these plans, the rocks are tough to negotiate when wet. Besides I woke up feeling like crap, some kind of throat and respiratory thing. My head feels stuffy too, it must be the weather. The humidity feels like balls...hot sticky ones. But the forecast is for cooler dry ones, i'm looking forward to this.

With the day off I switched to plan b, get the spare room upstairs done. Still some painting left to do as well as molding work. My kids always ask when I'm gonna finish this project but when there off from school and I ask for help they split. I managed to nail Shmev down and we went to Homo Depot to get the molding.

I get dizzy doing this shit, there's the base molding, window casing, door casing, door jamb, oh don't forget the quarter round, I did forget the nails so I had to run back. When it comes to these projects I'm no Bob Villa but I ain't Jack Tripper either. I wonder why they don't remake that TV show 3's company?

I got the door jamb in as well as the window molding and I did some more painting. I'm getting motivated to finish this so I'm going to take off work tomorrow and keep at it. As of now I'm not sure if I'm gonna ride the mtb, I feel ok but don't know how I'd do battling Wayway.

Not Today

Tuesday I did the 6x75 over geared intervals. I'm getting better at these. Without a power meter I use my avg. speed as a guide to try to get a sense of output. Using HR is not as accurate, by the 6th one my HR is still the same but my avg. speed goes down. To me this indicates loss of power. I try to keep my speed up vrs. trying to keep my HR up. Speed is power, money is fame, word is bond.

I got served. They found me but I don't know how, maybe pearl gave me up? I haven't been in awhile. They make such a big deal out of not showing, I blew it off once and nothing happened. I plan to go to this one, unless something comes up. Rob don't text me to ride in the beginning of November, you may be an accomplice to a crime by making me mtb instead of going to jury duty.

My younger brother lead the crew that did the stairs of the Union County court house when he was 18... Let me know how you like em Iggs

are you talking about the marble or cut stone steps out front, those things are impressive. That would have been a massive undertaking.

There is some great history and architecture in Elizabeth, just don't look like a tourist looking at it too long or you'll get jacked. I used to date a girl from Elizabeth in HS, thats how I learned to parallel park and not stop at stop signs.

Off From Work

Day 2 of molding detail...suck it! No riding today just real work on the spare room. I must say I'm getting more lazy and more reluctant to do this kinda of work. 10 yrs ago I demo'd the upstairs of my house, all interior stuff(no structural). I reconfigured the bed room, closet and hallway as well as rewired the whole upstairs. That was then, this is now... I'd rather be riding my bike...waaaaaaaa

H2H? Yes Way!

Yeah I signed up for the last H2H at way way. This will be my 3rd time racing here this year, early in the season was the first h2h and then the Bearscat. I'm not a great technical racer but If I'm in a grove I can surprise myself.

My sinuses are still a little stuffy and my head feels kinda groggy but I feel a little better than yesterday. To be honest I wasn't really in the mood to ride today, its been so dam wet and I'm tired of trashing my mtb in the mud. At this point I'm not too concerned with how I finish on Sunday, to use one of Grammar Glick's lines there are only 6 guys signed up right now so I'm hoping for a top 10.

Ah yes the finish line at Bearscat...a welcome sight.

Roll a fattie, watch the yankee game , listen to records , eat ice cream...bonus if you can do all these at once.

If you want something new to listen to I am always here for you. This was recorded less then 2 wks ago, so its fresh out of the womb. These guys are special, i feel like i went to church after listening to them play...but not in the falling asleep cant wait to get out of here kinda church. More like the refreshing, uplifting spiritual movement kinda church.
Go to Church, bitch

Chicks dig me. Have you met my main squeeze? I'm not sure when this photo was taken?

Yup those steps... My guess is they were re-done around 2006... He worked for a company named Water Troll which is owed by my mother good friend Janice and her father Sibby (RIP)... Both are Cranford people btw... They specialize in Historic restoration and bid on most government jobs

Saturday

Had the early shift at work, after 2 days off waking up a 4:30am wasn't too bad. Made it into work, got the crew going then changed cups. The cup is the hole the golfers putt into. Finished up and got home to take J to his soccer game at Randall's Island NY. We played here last week and it is quite a remarkable complex for such a metropolitan area. Here is what this place is all about.

Randall's Island Sports Foundation (RISF) was founded in 1992 as a public-private partnership to work on behalf of Randall's Island Park. The Foundation, in conjunction with City leadership, works to develop sports and recreational facilities, restore its natural environment, reclaim and maintain parkland, and sponsor programs for children.

66 fields will be available following redevelopment and will accommodate a greater variety of sports, including football, lacrosse, field hockey, and rugby amongst the sports already played at the Park, soccer, baseball and softball.

Well we ended up tying the #8 U14 ranked team in NY, not bad considering we're ranked 19th in NJ. When you look at the picture kids aged 13 can be 6'2" and shaving or they can be like J, 4'11" and still very much a child. I'm not gonna point J out you should know where he is by now...next to Pele.

Sunday

Me, Kirt and Chris26er...Utah was washing his johnson.

Hey did you here there was a lot of mud at wawa! Yeah this place was fudged up, but everyone who showed up knew it would be. Also it was no surprise when they took the new stuff out of the race course, that stuff was wet back in May and June when we didn't have rain.

This was the last H2H race. I kinda showed up looking for affirmation that I had gotten faster since the beginning of the year. It was tough to find that proof since a lot of the guys who did this race in May didn't show up for this yesterday. I can't count beating Rob Hayes as validation since he was illin while he raced, he had the same cold I did early in the week(upper respiratory feel like shit cold).

It was a day of small victories for me. My last lap I was really into a groove where time goes by so fast and I feel no pain. Its like those Rocky movies where he gets the shit beat out of him the whole fight then in the last round he steps up and does his thing. I did my thing and fought off guys I was battling with in the previous lap by blowing past them in the technical stuff and keeping the hammer down through the peanut butter fire roads.

The previous lap Jarred and Alex? in the 30-39's blew past me on the fire road, I was going to be sure they didn't do this again after I got out of the single track before them. In the last climb before the descent down the fire road to the finish line I heard one of them behind me scream your an animal. I thought to myself Oh Shit there on my heels...then I thought he should have stayed quite and sniped me, thanks for the tip off.

With these guys on my heels I gave it everything I had and was hauling down the fire road when my front tire went out from under me and I landed on my left quad and elbow. My main concern was to get back on the bike and keep going before I got caught. I hopped back on and grinded a big gear to carry speed to the finish. With 50yds to go I looked back and Alex was right behind me. It was a sprint finish with me holding my place. Ya!

My left quad and elbow are sore as hell but nothing serious. My shifter got screwed up after the 1st lap so that's in the shop. I ended up 9/17, close enough to midpack. Can someone please tell me I got faster since the beginning of the season to make me feel better?

Here is one guy that needs no one to validate that he got faster this year. Segundo got 3rd place in his debut Cat 1 SS class. He was also able to encourage his podium mates to flash the black panther salute, and that's pretty impressive since Segundo prolly has no idea wtf I'm talking about.

Robin i thought you were gonna tell me i got faster. someone anyone lie to me...please.

LOL - actually Lance was trying to figure that out too...I felt like I was slower...pedaling and going nowhere through the Nutella mud.

Oh, and yes, you got faster 😀
