IGVENTURE

Word, nice job out there Iggy. Running the SS in the geared class, a man after my own heart. Funny though, it was KVSP where I started to think that might not be a great idea anymore.

Congratulations Iggy! That was a strong showing. I thought about doing the same (racing my SS in my age group) but I didn't have the balls for it in the end 😱

Even tubeless will not help, KVSP eats tires and spits them out period. Especially at race pace.

OK, I might make myself the subject of public scorn but here it goes. I'm using Schwalbe Rocket Ron tires and while they are very light and have decent grip, their side walls are ULTRA thin. At Tymor, I washed out and got a rip on the side very easy. So, after riding Kittatinny 3 or 4 times and seeing that the rubber is gone in many places on the side wall and the thread/casing of the tire is showing I was very worried about flatting on race day. Then I had the idea of greasing the tires (w/ PArk Tool grease) all around at the widest section (on the side wall, well above the contact patch). I thought that this would help the tire slip if got caught by a rock instead of sticking to it and getting either a flat or some burped air.

I can't really tell if it work or not but I didn't flat or burped air, that's for sure. Maybe the Kittatinny rocks didn't like greased rubber 😀

For sure, greasing your tires and oiling your brake pads will make you go faster.

Greasing the rocks for the racers behind you is an interesting tactic, you should get one of those Batman smokescreen fog machines for under your seat maybe....😉

rLOL! For the record, it was a thin layer of grease that I put in the night before and by the next morning it was mostly absorbed/dry. If you scratched the tire though, you could feel it more "flexible". Anyway, I'm digging myself deeper into the whole here. I get it, it's a no-no. Lesson learned.

Up Front

Thanks for the kind words after KVSP last week, wow were did the week go?
That was a race for me to remember this season, things came together for me and that 3rd lap felt great. In hindsight I should have raced SS since my time was good enough for 2nd place in that class but I wanted to line up with my teammates and other strong guys in my age class. Coming out strong in my age group was a victory in my book.

Junk Ride
Tuesday After Work 2 Parker

After reading about Woody & Norm on there all day adventure on SS's to various destinations I decided to give this a shot. My 2 parker after work ride on the SS was Clayton then back to Charleston Springs trails. I set out after work with my Camelbak and SS spinning my ass off trying to stay at tempo pace.

Riding on the road with a SS sucks. It's easy to see how you can overheat spinning over 100rpm's and going only 14mph, your going too slow to be air cooled yet the out put of energy is too hot to maintain. Once I got to Clayton I put the SS to good use and had some fun. That place is small but it seems to go downhill on every trail in every direction.

As I was having fun in Clayton I heard some thunder in the distance and figured it was time to start heading back. At this point I decided to slow the pace down , I was not fully recovered from KVSP and this ride was heading to junkville. The ride was tuff in the heat but not hard enough to provide any great training benefit.

On the way back to Charleston I get doused with some isolated storms rolling through the area. The cool rain is a nice relief from the heat and I keep pedaling. By the time I got to the trail head at Charleston the rain had stopped and I cruise through the tiny bit of single track this place has to offer. Even though I work on the golf course here I've never had my MTB on the trails. You can hardly call this much of a trail its only about 3 miles in total, + who wants to stick around after work.

Not Junk Ride
Thursday Blazing Hot Tempo

This was the hottest tempo ride I have ever done. Not in terms of pace but as far as temperature.

Avg. Temp - 98.5 degrees
High Temp - 102.2 degrees
Time - 2:55:36
Avg. Speed - 19.9 mph

People talk about beating the heat, but I'd say there hiding from the heat. On this ride I took on the heat and beat it. After the ride I felt like I got punched in the face, not as bad as the Utah Joe tilt-a whirl but just a little sluggish. In about 15 minutes I was fine and on my way.

The hardest part of this ride was making sure my water was not boiling so I could drink it. I stopped 2x to get cold water and inhaled and ice cream sandwich on the 2nd stop. Heading south on Ocean Ave. in Belmar was brutal going into the wind, I hate the wind. It was amazing how much cooler it was 3 blocks from the ocean, I guess that's why people go to the beach when its hot.

I don't like the heat but it's important to adapt to it. Working outdoors and training in heat I am ready for racing in any kind of weather, if its 100 degrees for the DH40 I'm ready. Oh, and scrap all the horse shit magic drinks, all you need is water + it tastes the best.

Baseball Update

I can count on one hand how many games we have left. Wrapping up a 25 game schedule will bring some sanity back to my life. There are days when I leave my house at 4am and don't get home until 10:30 pm. But watching my kids get older I know there will be a day when I will beg for another baseball season with my 13 yr. old.

Where I Work
Charleston Springs golf course encompasses over 300 Acres, keeping 3 acres of greens alive in this heat is a lot of work. I love it when guys tell me they want a golf green in there backyard. That would be like giving a 6 yr old a Cervelo S3...there just not prepared to handle it.

The height of cut on this Bentgrass is .135, your lawn is about 2.5 inches.

Drinking only water in this heat isn't good advice. Keep the stories coming but I'd leave out the potentially dangerous advice. We had a teammate almost land in the hospital this week doing that. When it's this hot, "toughen up" isn't a real good suggestion.

Just 1 man's opinion.

I should preface this with this works for me. Going out and riding hard for 3hrs is not a good idea in this heat, it is risky and could have some serious health effects...no matter what is in your bottle cage.

Luckily my cooling system match's my engine and I have worked my way up to this kind of stupidity. The most important thing is to listen to your body and know when to pull the plug.

Green looks nice!
I didnt know you were responsible for the greens, that's a big job.
Youre right about adaptation, after working outside all summer I can ride in the heat and not feel any real extra ill effects.

Yes its true, I am considered the Bill Murray of golf courses...so at least I got that going for me.

Liong, road bikes are made for roads, Mtb's are made for trails and SS's are made for idiots...like us.

Dress Down Saturday @ Allaire

229785_2231307792050_1528536207_2408387_7971161_n.jpg

So I had the early shift at the golf course on Saturday morning and was planning to shoot down 195 after work for some fun at Allaire. All was good until I realized I didn't pack my shorts or jersey. It's tough to remember everything when you leave the house at 4am to make it into work. I usually throw my bike stuff in the car the night before, waking up at 3:30 am is a kick in the nuts and I'm usually in a fog.

I felt panic at first about not having my bike clothes and typed a desperate post on the board to locate some gym togs but then said screw it, I'll ride in my work clothes. No shorts No shirt No garmin No problem, I managed to have a good ride rockin the kahki's.

DH40 Pre-Ride
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/101456202

This morning me and buddy John Kuhn headed north for a lap of the DH40 race course at Stewart. We saw Ben, Dana, Lou and Case in the parking lot as well as a shit load of other guys looking to put some miles on race course. The Dark Horse guys did a great job marking the course, I had my Garmin 500 as back-up which proved itself to be useless. Luckily the arrows were up on the whole course except the last 3 miles. At this point me and John just bailed at trying to navigate the course with my crummy 500 which does a lousy job at picking up a gps signal to follow. We took the road back to the lot. My Garmin said 15 miles but John's Cateye said 18 which is more accurate.

I haven't been to Stewart since the rainy season when we had the 6-pack and SSAP before that. This place is so much faster when its dry, we averaged 10mph without even trying. This place is a blast to ride and the single track seems to flow endlessly. After our lap we saw some VTC guys in the lot, Roger, TJ and Monte. Roger thought the course was slower then last year, I can't remember that far back...it just seemed fast to me.

I'm gonna shoot my mouth off an say I want a top 5 finish in SS open, I'm not saying that is going to happen but that's what I want. Other then Roger I don't really know who else the contenders are in SS class. Going on fast sounding names alone I'm gonna say Nate Kraxberger riding for Sids Cannondale is going to be fast and I heard this guy David Castner is hell on wheels. I take it back, my only prediction is I'm going to have fun at this race.

Oh, and on the way out of parking lot I took a page out of Pearl's handbook and raised Dana's wipers on her car...I think it was Dana's car.

I like...but someone owes me .8 ounces dammit!

John Kuhn has some guns for a biker.

Rob11158^23 is in SS open.

Nate K is money. He's like Roger but without EPO.

Becks sucks.

At least you remembered your shoes.

You should have come to the Crash Festival today.

Do you like Procol Harem?

I looked at the list and would say there are a few hitter for sure, watch out for that Pampa dude he's crazy...

lol..i'm one of those idiot too!

i bet my spot for nathan Krax....
no worries,i predicted you'll be in top ten.either 6th or 8th (make sure you line up front row)
(last years if i wasn't crash.i'll def in top ten)

good luck,iggy!!

I'm gonna be way out of my comfort zone on this one, distance wise. My goal is to finish in less than 4 hs. and be in the top 50%, whichever results in less time.

Yeah, not a fan of crits, I fear crashing. Doing these types of races you have to ride smart and not think about going down. If your pre-occupied with going down you probably will, so I stay away. The other reason I stay away is that crits are not suited to my style of riding. My strength's are in endurance not power. I don't have much of a sprint and can't maintain a big effort that's needed to break away from the group. So this puts me at a midpack finish at best. Midpack is ok if you enjoy a race...I don't enjoy crits.

I would like to add road races into my schedule for next year. Something in the 50+ mile range with climbing. I know Ilya is doing Tour of Catskills this year and that looks awesome. Battenkill is a definite for me next year.

i bet my spot for nathan Krax....

Yeah Kraxberger is a great name, it just sounds fast...he sure ain't no Dewey Oxberger. The German translation for Kraxberger is get the fuck out of the way bitch...for real I looked it up.

But hey I love open classes it will be fun lining up with boy Rob, Chris G, Segundo, Dusty and Pearl.

Procol Harem

My 2 favorite song from these guys are Whiter Shade of Pale and Conquistador. Whiter Shade reminds me of slow dancing in the 8th grade, I always leave that tune on when I hear it on the radio...ah the memories. Do kids even dance anymore?

Conquistador This is a great song. Its remarkable that a band can perform this on stage with an orchestra and still produce such a tight sound.

So What

So lets dance. I loved Rodney's delivery, his jokes were not that funny but when he told them you laughed. So I guess its all in the delivery. That's why I dig James Murphey from LCD Soundsystem. I think the guy is a musical genius, he can't sing great but he can deliver a song. Losing my Edge sounds better in studio but you can watch him perform live here.

If you still not sold on this guy give this a shot. The sound quality and video is great on this show.

For some reason I thought that song was older than that
