James Pearl Thinks Blogging is Dead

This was the only drawback for me and my riding buddy...we lost JFBB going from Epic to Ikon.

It's so nice to have something that isn't half a day drive away on the pass now. I'm very happy personally.

Yes, of course you’re right. I’m still bitter about the day at Camelback when we were in a lift line for 45 minutes.

But now it’s free to ski so it’s hard to say it’s a bad thing. If I ever write that I plan to go there on a weekend morning please come punch me in the nuts. After 3:00 both places get pretty empty.

Ikon just dumped a lot of money in various resorts this year and I have to imagine this plays some part in the decision. I’m flat out shocked they joined because they get plenty of users without being part of the pass.

I like the girls game more than the boys because they actually "volley" the ball, as opposed to the boys who play something that might more accurately be called slaughterball.
Same holds true for women’s soccer and basketball.
Much more nuanced games.

Good to know, I've never actually been to CB or Blue.

I think it's just these resorts seeing the writing on the wall re: climate and hedging their bets. One disastrous season could put them in a hole, this way the pool of resources can keep the whole ship afloat...for now.

I've never purchased a full season Epic or Ikon, but I did get a 4 day Ikon last year for a trip to CO. Keep getting emails from them, and now that there is 2 local spots on the pass, I'm considering it. Like @Norm, I've avoided both Camelback and Blue for several years because of crowds. Now if Elk would join the party, I'd consider it.

The September Blog Project - #29

There is an old Far Side comic strip, called Second to last of the Mohicans. I'm not sure how many people will remember that. But I remember much of his stuff fondly, and I think for a lot of us it was a formative part of our youth. The image below represents this entry on the September Blog Project. Tomorrow is the last.

I could talk about the madness that was this morning but that would just sound like a parent complaining about being a parent. Sometimes life is hectic. I made it to the Millers Lane lot a bit after 8:30 and met Kirt for 2.5 hours of general raking, trimming, and sprucing up work. I would normally say finishing but if you're working on something that was done years ago, I think "sprucing up" is better. I wonder where the expression "sprucing up" came from. I wonder if there is a Far Side comic about Brucing Up something.

Beware of Doug. One of the nerds from my freshman dorm had that particular strip on his door. His name was Doug.

As usual, I think we did some good work today. I did not take pictures of it all. You'll have to go ride it to see it but you should not ride it tomorrow. It'll be too wet. This is now far more appealing but I do want to go back and rip out that little stump. Once we get that it'll be smooth as butter, if butter was frozen into baby heads and dumped in a trail. Still, this is much cleaner than it was.

I rented a road bike for next week. I have done my best to not use the word "tomorrow" in this blog because I think it's important not to lose today thinking too much about tomorrow. That said, I rented a bike for a week. But I rented it today.

Carson came by and dropped off some stuff that came from NC.

Julia made baked mac & cheese for dinner.

D came home from Philly.

I did a Zwift ride and used my iPhone, and it worked great save for the fact I can't see anything. I wanted to test it out, as it was suggested I just consider a refurb iPad as a replacement. I was then able to email the FIT file after I was done. This is of no consequence to me, but D also uses the same account and usually uploads from the Mac when she's done. So the whole file access piece is pretty important. Not sure how hard that would be with Apple TV.

Anyway, it's Friday and it's still raining.

Why do you need to email the fit file?

Zwift is linked to my Strava account so it auto uploads. When D rides she needs to manually upload the fit file to her account independently.

We now have 4 people using this contraption here so it’s not uncommon for me to have 2-3 Zwift rides a day on Strava. I delete the ones that aren’t me. But if you’ve ever seen me appear to do 2-3 Zwift rides in a row, that’s why.

The September Blog Project - #30

Today is the day we celebrate Bear's birthday, a day he turns 3 years old. As he is from some random place in South Carolina nobody really knows when he was born at this stage. But this date is as good as any. He got a new toy and some salmon later in the day. Plus we took him for a walk.

Today was a pretty not incredible day. I had these thoughts about doing stuff, like going to Round Valley or doing more TM at CR. But in the end, it went like this:

Drink coffee, do nothing of note
Repeat
Repeat

We did walk the dog in there but after lunch it was suddenly 1:30 and I had done jack shit with my day. Truth be told, it didn't get much better but I did eventually do some work in the yard, including putting together a gap-spanner for the jump-to-whale. I considered building another ramp but I want to see if this one can work before I do that.

The point of this is to pretty much prevent bad things from happening. I suspect in the end, I'll need to bring these closer together. But now I feel better about trying it and not nose diving into the whale and going ass over teakettle into a massive wooden structure. As always, it's a WIP. I decided not to hit this today as it's all still wet and it's not a great day to injure myself.

Then I did a Zwift ride just before dinner.

Today is the last post of the September Blog Project and it's been good to be writing consistently again. I have done 12 TM days this month so I could certainly subtitle the blog, Giving Back September if I were so inclined. I don't intend to stop but the Friday series will be very limited, as I will only be in NJ for 1 of the 4 Fridays of October. I still plan lots of stuff. I've been enjoying it and it gives me something to do outside when it's raining out.

Hopefully someone has gotten something out of this. If there's anything to take away, I would hope it's this. Send it. Just send it. If you want to do something, you won't get there by talking about it. Just do it and talk about it later. I have tried to embrace each day as best I can, and that comes in many different forms, of which I have touched on many during the last month. Also, work less.

D asked me what I'm going to do next. I'm not going to keep this format but I think I might do something else in October. Maybe like write a haiku every day about your favorite sea creature. Something like that. But then, I guess you only have 1 favorite and 31 days in the month. So that probably won't work.

Thanks for reading. And thanks for all the fish.

October Pictures #1 - Airplanes

For the month of October I shall endeavor to take 1 picture a day then write 1 paragraph about that picture. Today's picture is of an airplane, as seen below. As most of us know, airplanes are used to travel from one location to another. After going to bed then waking up in New Jersey every single day in the month of September, that streak will come to an end on this, the first day of October. The airplane below has taken us away from NJ today, where we will shortly be going to bed in another state. You'll have to tune in tomorrow to find out where that is, though I'm not sure I've obscured that fact, at least not intentionally. Until then, have a great evening. And when in doubt, send it.

October Pictures #2 - Coffee Beans

No trip is complete without coffee. I do not drink coffee to wake up. I wake up to drink coffee. I spend my morning with my coffee, just like I spend my morning with my dog (when I'm home). I would not call this a religion, or an obsession, but a symbiotic relationship where I'm still trying to determine what the coffee gets out of it, other than my admiration. I brought a small quantity of Onyx with me, which would get me 2 cups this morning. But then, one of the first orders of business was to locate a good coffee shop and buy some beans, which I did before lunch. Not only did they have some Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, which happens to be my favorite coffee region in the world, they also had a pour-over. We'll see how the beans land tomorrow morning, but the pour-over was fantastic.
