Sometimes you ride the bike….
And sometimes the bike smashes your face straight to the dirt.
It just comes with the territory, but when it comes, its sucks the big one. Sometime more than others and one this fine occasion, it fell somewhere in between. So let me step back a bit so you know what the hell I am talking about.
Last Wed I went to the trails in the evening to meet j, chris and brian from Halters. I got there before they did and worked on a muddy section as it had rained the night before . Soon enough Suki appears and shortly after, the humans. It is like 7:45 , so not much daylight left, but nice these guys at the trails. We ride and I feel good and am starting to feel better and better on the bmx bike. J and brian head out and Chris and I are riding the wall ride (4 – 5’ dirt transition with an 8’ high plywood wall). I have not ridden a wall ride in a long time and have not hit this one. I hit it 5 or 6 times and it is just about time to leave. Next thing I know, I am sitting in a seat at the trails, covered in dirt and it is darker than what I last remember. Apparently I had fallen and kocked myself out. I do not even faintly remember riding towards the wall, falling, getting up, or sitting down in the chair. Chris said I was out for less than a min. In a few min we leave. I completely do not remember walking out of the jumps, crossing a creek on stepping stones, through a section of woods and through a field to the parking lot. I remember talking to chris in the parking lot and him riding with me down the driveway at which point I tell him I am ok to ride home. From there, I do not remember after crossing the street until my driveway, which is probably like a quarter mile.
I come inside and get right in the shower because I am filthy (see pic below). I come down stairs and tell wife I got knocked out. She gets more pissed than I have seen her in awhile. She forbids my to take my son to the trails until further notice and posts on facebook that my bikes are 4-sale. We deliberate for the next couple of hours whether or not to go to the emergency room and eventually got there at 11:30. I have a CT scan and they say it is ok and send me home. Next day they call back and recommend a MRI due to a 6mm high density spot, just to clarify it is nothing.
I rode to work the next morning and felt ok. Ride home after a 10 hr day felt like junk. No headache but just felt blah. Had Friday off of work and took it off the bike too. By the end of the day, I was tired and felt crappy and my teeth hurt, bad, nothing loose, but chewing on my right side is not good.
Saturday, I headed out early for a morning road ride as I knew it was my only riding option. Felt good, legs are rested, and bang out a nice little ride.

Sunday, standard easy morning loop, good average for me.

Sunday afternoon I make my return to the trails and when I tell my wife I am going there, she responds “I don’t give a shit”. So still some stuff to work out there….Anyhow, only groms at the trails, so I work for over an hour and then ride for a bit. Jump the mains and just don’t feel right. The jarring of landing (even know it isn’t really jarring) just isn’t jiving well with my head. It is hot too, so maybe that didn’t help. In any case, pack it up and head home.
So as of now I feel ok, head is alittle weird here and there, but overall all ok. You can see from the last pic that the abrasions have all but cleared up and just come bruising around my eye that remaining. Have a bruised knee, swollen ankle, bruised hip and teeth still freaking hurt, which is probably the worst of all of it. Have a MRI tomorrow, so hopefully that turns out ok. Even though I am pretty sure it will, you just never know.
So this took alittle wind out of my bmx kick sail, but I will just step back for a day or two and should be good. I am slacking with the road and mtb hours this month since I have like 11 hours to the bmx, so I will put sometime to that. I am going to start working on the wife to let me bring my son to the trails, as long as I don’t ride when he is there. So at least I can still build with him. I also have to get to halters to give Chris a 6-pack for getting out of the woods, and on my way….
