Moon Shadows are Evil

Man I need to check this place out. Blacking out is hardcore. Glad you are okay.

Damn bro. This reminded me a bit of when my nephew collided with someone in the outfield chasing a fly ball and the other kids knee hit his head pretty good and he was out like a light for a bit. When he came too he could not remember anything about the game which was halfway over and it screwed with his memory a little even about things leading up to the game. (Getting there etc) He underwent all the tests and the doctors ended up saying he was fine and that he would likely never get those bits of memory back and that was that. The next day he was able to recall a few minor additional things but all that stuff he couldn't remember was just erased. He's still smart and in college now if that makes you feel better. Let the wife chill out, don't knock heads with her (so to speak).

I have made a breakthrough in my internet video career and made an "Edit" from the local trails.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4y_El72AGs

Alittle lengthy so here are the highlights for me:

I starting making appereances at 7:38, white shirt, white bike: this is probably my favorite run of the video for me.

9:45, good train, people riding side by side and shit

10:54, more train silliness, dude 360's in front of me. Scary. fun.

More stuff in there but I only jump and do x-ups, so it is really all the same of me...The one where I am wearing a backpack is when I was leaving.

This is the most fun I have had on a bike in a very, very long time.

This thread lives on....

Help me with one thing:

Mooch Race or Philly Gran Fondo

Here are the factors:

Wife approved for one or the other, but not both
Have not ridden my MTB on trails since the 6-pack
Need fork service, brake bleed and possibly gear on mtb before mooch

Philly? Im going to pretend I didnt read that. If you do the mooch race, ill drive back through the night to be there (I have a wedding the night before in Baltimore)

Why do I have the feeling you are going to do that anyways :hmmm:

Philly is MY city, where MY is defined as the city I am closest to.

Do da Mooch, if anything else you'll prolly get more photo quality avatar material and you'll help create the hype we need for this race with the talk of a possible Kevin sighting at Mooch Madness.

+ if you act now I think Norm will wave the late fee.

Drop off bike at Halters for service.

Should have seen that coming. I can't say I even knew F-rar didn't win. He probably doing this right now though.

So big time slacking on this thread, which I pretty much stopped on purpose and just didn’t say so. I think I will start it back up in September and here is an update of things lately:

During the summer, every-other week I am able to work a 4, 10 hour day schedule and have Friday off. While I participate in this, I have to say I am not a fan. Sure I have off on Friday, but the rest of the week just kills me. I hate working after 5, so I work 5:30 – 4:30, which is my normal leaving time. So even though I am getting up at the same time, my morning rides are squashed or limited to just a commute. Sometimes I gain time at lunch, but that is frowned upon by the manager, so if you do it too often, questions start to be asked. The assumption that you aren’t working the 10 hours is stressful too since everyone is under the microscope with their time. I am usually fairly honest with it, but if I take a long lunch of come in late for whatever, there just isn’t much time to make that up. Anyways, this week is my 4-10 and the last one is the week before labor, which is nice. I just can’t wait to get off this schedule and get back to “normal”.

In June, I slacked on the road bike and used time for the BMX. In July, I got back on the mileage wagon a bit and got in a bunch of rides over the 2 hour mark, but nothing more than 2.5. I knew I was either doing the Philly Fondo or the Mooch race, so I have been trying to whip my ass into shape for some more distance. Still not managing over 2 hours, but 2 hours at a higher intensity so hopefully it is doing something. I am satisfied with the averages I have been seeing on a consistent basis this year and feel stronger on flat section and actually think I got slower on your average hill section and can’t say I have seen much improvement there. Since I don’t use anything but a garmin with no HRM or power data, it is really hard to judge “improvement” because average speeds mean nothing unless you are doing the same loop with the same conditions. Still, I have seen 20 mph averages more often than not and I will take that as improvement. In any case, I am happy with my time for the Zion TT and glad I am on the upper quarter with some of the faster guys posting times.

Mountain Bike
Mountain what? No mountain bike. None, nada, zilch! Last time I rode it for XC was at the 6 pack. Last time I rode it at the dirt jumps was back in June before I got back on a 20”. So my skills probably went to shit, unless the place I am riding has real jumps, which doesn’t really exist outside of the mtb parks. My bike in bad need of fork maintenance and a brake bleed, which is being fixed right now at Bicycle Pro. Turns out the enduro fork seals trashed my stanchions and also let all sorts of mud into my fork leg, so I needed a new fork or pay a bunch to get that one repaired. Then it turns out my caliper is frozen and my lever is leaking, so some new parts required there, although SRAM came through (and a shout out to Colin for making that happen) with some new stuff on that end.
So the mooch race is a week away, I have not ridden my mountain bike in a few months and I have a new fork that I will likely not be able to ride on a trail beforehand, so not sure what to expect. I feel good on my road bike, but we all know that doesn’t translate to feeling good on a mountain bike. Should be interesting at the mooch race and hopefully lead to some more ass chapage.

This week’s rides:

Sunday: Raining like a mofo all day. Ride the sysnapse on my zion loop and do the TT and get the same exact time as my fastest time, so maybe I am maxed out there. The rain was a “perfect rain” where it wasn’t cold and it wasn’t really windy, so the rain was a nice change to riding in 90* weather. I felt super good on the bike and managed a 20 mph average.

Tuesday: After resting Monday, I did my normal morning loop in the evening and managed over 20 mph here too. As noted, on the climbs I felt slower, but everywhere else felt faster.

Wednesday: Junk miles into work. Lights are on for at least a half hour now. Lunch with client (which I am counting as work time), so time for a ride before work.

Thursday: Ride through Princeton again. Was hungry as a mofo and the granola bar and gel I ate just wasn’t cutting it. Bike got trashed due to light rain too and I lent my cross bike to my wife’s boss so he could try it out, so no rain bike right now. Light rain is much worse for the bike getting covered with junk as heavy rain washes everything away and light rain just makes everything stick to your bike.I think this ride falls into the junk miles category.

Went to the jumps with my son last night and they are in very bad shape from the rain on Sunday. Worked a few lips but just scratched the surface. On a positive note, my son had his balance bike and went over a bunch of rollers no problem and really loved it, which is such an awesome this to see. However, my wife doesn’t approve of him going there with me ever since I got knocked out there, so even though I wasn’t riding, I got a ration of shit when I got home, which kinda put a damper on things. She also expresses to me “how she feels about that place”, which is not a good kind of feel, so not sure how I am gonna handle that one. I thought the just ignore it would work, but maybe not. Anyways, that’s it for now….

Monday
Sunday riding didn’t have for the fact that I just didn’t feel like getting up at 5am to ride for a short time. Sleeping in felt like a much better option. When I do this, I wake up feeling like I should have rode, but whatever, it is not like it is helping me riding for an hour or 1.5 on the road. I would have liked to get a longer day in, but that just wasn’t in the cards. Oh yeah, title says Monday, Monday I did ride before work, then a short spin at lunch and the ride to and from work, so 2+ hours of riding broken up into a bunch of little pieces, which again, probably does nothing to help build much of anything.

Tuesday
Ride before work on a non-typical morning route. Nothing special, didn’t feel that great, didn’t feel that bad either. Cool morning. I break out one of my wool SS jerseys since the 50’s are the perfect temp for them and it feels good. Thin wool socks too. It feels good to have the cooler weather back.
Left work early for a dentist appointment to have one of my wisdom teeth pulled and getting a filling. After the doctor numbed me with enough novocain to put down a horse he did the filling in like 2 min and then pulled the wisdom tooth. I started laughing while he was doing it because I really thought he was going to put his foot on my chest to be able to pull harder. I was going to take a picture of the tooth, but damn, that shit was gross, so I decided not to pass it on.

Since I was out of work early, I picked up my son early and headed over to the Mercer airport to see a WWII bomber that was there. I am no WWII buff or anything, but my grandpa's did serve during the war and it is cool to see something like this when it is in the area. My son was not very interested in the plane and more interested in the helicopters and prop planes that were taking off. We walked through the plane, which is pretty awesome and he just wanted to get off because he was scared of the guns or something. Meanwhile, my 7 year old nephew was there too and is putting his mouth around the end of the barrel of the gun and pretending he was getting his head blown off, kids…

women's rights be damned, pinups on the side of a vehicle of mass destruction is just cool

See, my son is looking over toward the runway and not at the plane

Wednesday
Junk miles, took it easy on the ride in. I wear long finger gloves since the dentist said I could spit or blow my nose for 24 hours because I would pull the clot out of the gapping f’ing hole in mouth, so considering I shoot a snot rocket even 30 seconds or so, I wore the gloves so I could let the snot just kinda leak out of my nose and wipe it off. My jersey was covered in snot by the time I got to work.

Today
So here we are, a few days from the mooch race and I have yet to ride my mountain bike more than around neighborhood. I at least have everything together, but trying to test a new forks setting riding off curbs and smalls bumps is kinda hard. Eh, what difference doesn’t it make, with jshort sandbagging in sport, I didn’t have a chance anyways.
I rode this morning with the last hard effort before the race. Felt good, the tailwind for the first 9 miles felt even better and was even more better when I did get a face full of wind on the way back. Another 21 mph average, which is nice to see some consistency this year as compared to last. Then a chill ride into work. I blew a gently snot rocket or two, but still resorted to wiping the snot on my glove and then the side of my shorts. Yum.

Fred of the Year
Lately, I think my poll numbers have been dropping lately in the Fred of the Year contest presented by mthnj.com, so I picked up a Castelli Aero Race jersey on ebay for the low price of $51, including shipping. Considering it retails for $130, I thought it was pretty good deal. I have been looking for a form fitting jersey since I got the body paint bibs last year and I finally pulled the trigger due to the low price. I have to admit, this thing feels f’ing sexy when you put it on. Due to the tightness, it didn’t bunch up in the shoulders like all of my other jerseys and the sleeves actually are snug on my 12 year-old girl size arms. I can also wear this jersey to the club and look like Lou in one of those paint-on shirts. The only thing that could make this kit more fredtastic is some shoe covers and those aero gloves that come up over your wrist. I will not be getting those, but just think of the fredability. This is my last attempt at getting some votes though as I am completely out-numbered with the number of carbon rims (which I would totally have if I had the means) and power meters on this site.

Can't you just not do it? From the sounds of it, it's an option. Do you feel pressure from the family (aka, wife) to get the Friday off? I don't like the 4x10 idea at all, personally.
