Music

I would often put my boy to sleep to Dub Reggae cause he really responded well to it... Last spring my buddy lead me to Not For Kids Only and now it is a part of the arsenal of music he falls asleep to

The Chameleons' Strange Times is still one of my all time favorite albums - had it on cassette (twice) and vinyl, then CD. I can't help but think of them every time I hear Interpol (it's almost blatant how much they picked up on The Chameleons sound). They are the only band that I actually ever sent a fan letter too thanking them for making such amazing music, and I got a letter back.

Script of the Bridge is also one of those that I can't believe remained as obscure as it did http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...e=UTF8&child=B00181Q2JI&qid=1294433100&sr=1-1

my music tastes are all over the place, but I remain rooted in all the stuff that got me through high school and early years in the navy so long ago: Madness, The Jam (Down in the Tube Station never gets old for me), The Clash, XTC!

I've grown weary of a lot of stuff I once liked, Counting Crows were a favorite and then I witnessed a fan encounter with Adam Duritz in ATL airport where he said he was too tired to autograph a birthday card and I decided I was too tired to listen to them anymore - good lord, he whines even when he's not singing. Burnt out quickly on Dave Matthews, Pearl Jam and so many other bands from the 90's that took themselves way too seriously - maybe I'll come back to them later on in life.

Lately liking Girl Talk because he just throws a lot of everything I listen to into one gigantic ADD pile.

Anyone paying for Pandora? Is it worth it - the ads have definitely become more intrusive than they used to be.

How awesome to hear someone mention The Chameleons..."Tears" and "Swamp Thing" are two of my most favorite songs ever. They were a great band.

I've been laid up sick with the illness going around but managed to make a recovery in time to enjoy some fresh snow on the xc skis. I don't really remember where we left of with this music stuff but I think the conversation was mellow music and beards. I picked out something tonight to keep that theme going.

Music That Needs to be Heard
I felt like crap the last couple days due to a fever and head cold but listening to these guys did help me get better...or at least feel better. So if your sick and need to feel better or as a preventive from getting sick you should listen to these bearded guys. Stay healthy.

YELLOW MATTER CUSTARD
Featuring:
MIKE PORTNOY

NEAL MORSE
KASIM SULTON

BB Kings

Yellow Matter Custard is a Beatles tribute supergroup consisting of Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater, Transatlantic, OSI, Liquid Tension Experiment, Liquid Trio Experiment Avenged Sevenfold), Neal Morse (Transatlantic, Spock's Beard), Paul Gilbert (Racer X, Mr. Big) and Kasim Sulton (Utopia, Todd Rundgren, Meat Loaf). They take their name from a lyric in "I Am the Walrus", by The Beatles: "Yellow matter custard, dripping from a dead dog's eye".

More a project than a band, they performed only twice: on May 17, 2003 at Upper Montclair, New Jersey and May 18, 2003 at B.B. King's Blues Club, New York. The latter performance was recorded and released as the double CD One Night in New York City later that year, on the Radiant Records label.

I went to the original show back in 2003 and it was awesome! :getsome::getsome:

Origins
So lets go back to the 80's to look at a band that paved the way for the 90's alternative musical scene. While this band is considered early alternative you can hear the punk rock influence in their music. Kurt Cobain was a big fan of this band and even after the band broke up and Kim Deal went on to form the Breeders he was a fan of that band as well.

I have to admit I am more of a Breeders fan myself but I do get a kick out of seeing Kim Deal then and now(well 5yrs. ago playing with the Breeders).

I just listed to Last Splash the other day 😀

The Pixies are massively important, IMO. There are legions of bands that were inspired, at the least, by what the Pixies did. I think Weezer built an entire career out of mimicking them.

Doolittle in particular is pretty much a perfect record.

Feedback
No doubt the Pixies where a huge influence on later bands, Nirvana and Wheezer have admitted they where trying to sound like them. Beck, the Cure and Radiohead have all admitted being influenced by them as well. The Pixies where truly a band that sounded like no other.

Music That Needs to be Heard
The band featured tonight is up for 2 grammys, best new artist and best rock song. Bill(Glenlivet12) gave these guys, Mumford & Sons, a shout out a few weeks ago. If you've never heard of these guys I'd say you live in the Cave.

Music That Needs to be Heard
The featured band tonight is described as a Indie band with a soft rock inspired sound. Soft rock is one of those terms that came out in the late 70's or early 80's to describe dentist office music...pretty lame stuff. While soft rock is wimpy it is catchy and at times undeniably like-able.
A scene from Tommy Boy sums up what I mean about soft rock being kinda like closet music. Well anyway tonights supergroup features members of Bon Iver, Megafaun, and Rymesayers. When I first heard these guys I was like what the hell is this crap...but then I'd wake up in the morning with the tune in my head. It is soft rock but its cool soft rock...at least I think so.
This is the live version if you want to see what these clowns look like and here is the tighter studio version.

Music That Needs to be Heard
C'mon right back at ya with some more solid entertainment. Keepin the records spinning I am going to feature a band that is going to be on Jimmy Kimmel tonight. These guys remind me of Vampire Weekend, they are kind of boy bandish...but they have chicks in the band. I have to admit I love to crank this song when driving in the car and bounce my head around. I dig the young fresh sound of these kids.

Caleb Hawley, Caleb Hawley...now where have I heard that name before. Ah yes I saw him the other night here. Like Sandie said we will be seeing more of this guy. Yeah I watch Idol...is that gay?

Music That Needs to be Heard
I've played a lot of boy band type stuff here but I do have a dark place too. The dark place usually involves Trent Reznor. The guy is getting old but he still manages to put out compelling thought provoking lyrics. Some of the shit this guy comes out with I can't play when the kids are around so I have to make sure I'm alone in the house before I crank it. Is this wrong?

They say the imitation is the highest form of flattery. So when other bands cover a song by another artist I guess that's the ultimate compliment. The featured band tonight XX put out there debut album in August of 2009 and have heavily influenced the music industry in a short time. The have been covered by Shakira(who gives a shit) and Gorillaz.

I love these kids, and enjoy their approach to music. They are at home on a bridge in Amsterdam(the other band members appear at end of vid) or on stage in their country. The dude looks like a young Derek Jeter.

Music That Needs to be Heard
They say there is no better harmonizing than that of brothers, after listening to these brothers I would have to agree. With a cello, stand up base, guitar and banjo what could be better. Scott Avett has a powerful voice that is captivating, this song is on my regular rotation at home.
