Music

I heard this band The Gaslight Anthem a year ago on XM. Got 2 of their albums on iTunes '59 Sound and American Slang. Real good stuff

kudos to Gaslight Anthem....I was thinking of getting some of their stuff...this reminded me. Thanks!

WE haven’t heard from the ladies in awhile so tonight I’ve decided to feature a voice destined to be an icon in music. The voice is Norah Jones. Its hard to believe her debut album came out 9 years ago, I’m so used to hearing her hit song Don’t Know Why on the radio…has it been 9 years.

I’ve never bothered to read her bio until recently, today in fact. Her dad is Ravi Shankar, the sitar guru…wow. There was a time in the early 70’s when this was cool but you had to smoke a big bag of weed to enjoy this music, once people sobered up they saw the sitar for what it was and abandoned it quicker then the AMC Pacer.

Norah grew up in Texas, which explains the slight drawl in her voice. She claims her mentor is Willie Nelson and like Willie she has a distinct voice that millions of people can identify. Even if you’re not a fan of country music, singers like Norah and Willie know how to tell a story when they sing. The ability to tell a story transcends all types of music and when they sing you get the sense that everything is going to be all right.

Here is Norah singing Wilco’s hit Jesus,Etc. If you want to check out more of this musical icon you can check this out as well.

And I’m gonna throw another great story telling Texan in here too.
Willie Nelson This is some bonus footage with Captain & Tennile doing the inro for Willie.

Nine years, yikes... It feels like yesterday😱

I really cant talk Texan musicians without mentioning Stevie... This may really sound left field but my step father and his good friend Mad Dog owned a bar in Houston called the Rising Star... It was hear that Stevie would get drunk and play a couple of songs before hitting bigger venues in Houston... I really didnt appreciate the stories that much being 10-11 years old but good thing the step dad is still around... I think I will needle his memory banks before its too late

Stevie Ray Vaughn was our savior in high school. The year was 1983, as a junior in hs me and my buddies could not stand to hear Michael Jackson beat it. Then along came Stevie...rock on.

My son has been going to sleep to this for the past few weeks...Take the stigma of smoking the "ha" out of it and this is some great stuff

there is no way you kid isn't gonna grow up to be a stoner listening to that, but I guess apples and trees may apply?

My son was super pissed yesterday when I told him the Hot Water Music CD wasn't in the car. He loves that album, well the first 3 songs anyways....

I had a Hot Water Music and Alkaline Trio double cd back in the day. Alkaline trio was the band that stuck with me out of the 2

Yeah, for some reason I never got into the Alkaline Trio even though my friends listen/listened to it. Avail was the same way.

Great Performers
In rock & roll its all about the attitude. Someone like Norah Jones can walk on stage and rely on her talent as a vocalist to sell a song, a voice like hers comes along once every 20 years.
Most rock stars are mediocre vocalists as compared to someone like Nora Jones but it’s the way they deliver the song on stage that captivates the audience. Robert Plant, Mick, Bowie…these where some great front men in rock & roll.

The performer I chose to showcase today is Deborah Harry. The thing I love about her besides her 1979 perky breasts is her brash, I don’t give a fuck attitude on stage. Her music was punk based but it reached a massive audience and her sound helped to change music as it went into the 80’s. I remember hearing Blondie and the Police on the radio in the late 70’s and was like wha wha wtf?! Without the internet in the 80’s, radio, clubs and tv was the only way to get your music heard...and you have to have the attitude.

Check her out, she is so bad ass yet so feminine.

I think that Debbie Harry was my first preteen crush. A 1979 ten year old me didn't know why she was hot, she just was. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DdrsSbhTWas&feature=related

True story, my friend Marc's dad works at a body shop in West Long Branch. About a month ago we dropped off his car there to get some body work done. We stopped in to see his dad cause he's always got some cool cars there he's working on. He's got a '73 Chevy Caprice he had just started doing body work on. He says "guess who's car this is?" We don't know. Deborah Harry's he says. Apparently she lives nearby, she drove the car in herself and one of the shop guys gave her a ride home.
So I met her car at least.

I live in West Long Branch. My dad used to work with her sister. I got to meet her a few times when I was in high school & she was at the height of her fame. Really nice & very cool.

I would have liked to met Deborah Harry back in the day. If I saw her now it would just ruin the bad ass vibe of her I have in my mind, she looks like a grandma now. aging sucks.

Music can be simple yet so intense. Thats my intro to this next band who performs at Melo Johnny's bike shop in Austin Texas. Even if you don't like the band MJ's shop is world famous so you can look at bikes during the video clip.

I didn't google this band but I am gonna call it Indie folk music. Good harmonies with strong vocals, you can feel the power in the room during this performance, kinda gospel like. This gig was part of SxSW , which is a great place to check out new music as well as film artists if you into that sort of thing.

Since they don't mind playing in bike shops I'll have to get J to give these guys a call. How awesome would it be to get a Supersix after listening to some cool live music.
