NYC PABT Commuters

I guess my main question is... Would the city confiscate the bike at all? Being lock up to a fence or post of some sort.

I mean if the bike gets stolen... I prolly won't be crying a river...

From what I know they don't take anything unless it looks like it's been hit by a bus and locked up in the same spot for 5yrs.

i have a set of removable pedals which are interesting from MKS
but they'll cost more than your bike

I have a set of rusty pedals that I can use that is one side spd and the other flat.

BTW, this is the POSS.
Will most likely change the wheels and try to convert it to ss
Will also see if I can change out the cranks.

If I were going to do long term storage, I'd probably try these racks on 40th just east of 8th Ave.

I usually see room, and there are some successful long term residents.
I attribute part of this to locking mechanism. I'll try to catch a shot of one, but think u-lock through rear triangle (catches frame and rear wheel), with a cable attachment wrapped tightly around the frame up to secure front wheel.
I think I have seen one clipped cable there in the years I've been passing through.

Also I think there is decent traffic through there all day/night.
Look for that in a spot- look at the area you want to use like a bike thief.

That said, assuming $30 bike and $30 lock, an annual citibike membership is about 2.5 heartbreaks/year, and much less hassle mostly.

Also they offer a ton of discounted memberships- check your employer, and others you might qualify for.

I've been thinking about locking up a bike around PABT and using it to commute downtown. Is there a good spot where I can lock up my bike overnight and weekends? I'll be using my POSS... Piece Of Steel Shit.

Why would you want to commute via bike in that hell hole in the first place? You'll die!

Oh, and I have seen the occasional bus rider using the bus' cargo hold to schlep a bike in/out of the city.
Don't see this a lot though, I imagine dragging a bike through PABT is a special pain in the ass.

BAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NO.
and I ride CitiBike almost everyday it's not raining/snowing.
Maybe I'm not paying too much during rush hr traffic... but didn't seem bad at all during the day.

Definitely don't want to drag the bike with me on the bus.

can your office hold a small folding bike?
There's other considerations besides space going in that direction like a N+1 and those tiny wheels.
You can find some crappy ones for under 100 on CL

I vote a cheap ass folding bike.

By the time you walk to your locked bike you can be halfway to work and no worrying about locking and anxiety bike not being there.

At the office, it's not a problem. We actually have a bike storage area.

I've seen guys carrying around folding bikes in pabt and it's not something I want to do.

This is probably the most important part about the bike not getting stolen. If it looks like a PITA, the thief will move on to something easier to score.

I've been locking up at Hoboken Terminal daily for ~4 years (not overnight) with a Kryptonite New York lock through the rear triangle and rear wheel with not so much as an attempt of a theft. My wife has had similar good fortune. Not on the same level as Midtown by any means but it has its fair share of thieving.

Also any thought to finding a secure rack like @jmanic pictured above that has the appearance of video surveillance? Wouldn't mean anything if it got jacked but just another level of deterrence.

I started paying attention to where i can lock the bike. I usually walk east on 41st and looks like there are couple of spots. I was also looking at the condition of those bikes and I never thought i would say this but my POSS looks good compared. But would anyone steal a bike with "C8N" permanently marked on the frame with no brand decals? Gonna lock it up with a cheap U lock and krypto chain with a separate lock.

Anyways, I am going to start working on downgrading the POSS this coming weekend but I think I am going to keep it geared with a acera rd and a 7spd freewheel. Also need to change out the crank. Anyone got cheap squared BB crank?

@qclabrat I think you mention you might have a cheap crank? 🙂

I have friend who has been doing this for years. Make sure it's a total junker. Even these are stolen from time to time. If you can use the Citibike, that would be your best bet.

I think it's an old Sugino off my wife's Univega, still on the bike, but shouldn't take long to pull it off
will try to run down later to take a photo

Silly but nonetheless important question... what do u guys do about helmet hair other than keeping it short?
