OFFICIAL Spring Allergies Thread

funny, if they have weed, i ask to borrow their eye drops 😉

zero effect on me today - think it was the maple trees budding ? or maybe the forsythia?

Well I am a newest member of this blasted pollen war we are in. Last year I had hints but this year has been a full on battle.

Some people also use that neti-pot thing. @jShort - IIRC you had made mention of it? Do you use it?

I'm just gonna tag you in every post I make today.

Yes, the neti pot is good stuff. I used to get sinus infections every spring till I started using one when I feel them coming on.

You have to be careful with those, I started using one after a bad sinus infection a few years and stopped because it is too easy to get residual water in your sinuses, which is no good either

For as long as i could remember, i had chronic sinus issues. I could never break the cycle of sinus infections, inflamation, head colds, sinus pressure, migraines ect....

Aftet a couple yeara of rinsing with the neti pot twice a day, i no longer need it. It broke the cycle and gave my sinus a chance to heal.

The only time i use it now is in the winter when the house is super dry and dust is high.

Stef tried it and she hates it, she said it feels like she's drowning and like @stb222 mentioned, residual water gets stuck and she would get ear infections.

I guess its not for everyone. One thing that is great about it - it freaks the kids out when they see the water pouring out of your nose.

The pro move is to snort it into your mouth like you're hocking a loogie, then spit into the sink. Not for beginners though

Utah told me today that he has the windows of his house full-out wide open.

Bad Utah.

I mean if this shit bugs you even a little bit, you should be doing stuff like:

1. Run the fan of the central air 24/7
2. Change the air filters of the AC
3. Get an air purifier in your bedroom
4. Do not wear the same clothes 2 days in a row
5. If you were outside, shower before bed

These are pretty simple, and can make your life quite a bit better. Otherwise you're rolling around on a bed that is loaded up with pollen.

I just heard a doctor recomending a hair washing and clothes change right after coming in. Also switch to the "good" quality filters. They cost 5 to 10 more but well worth it

For your central AC? That may burn the motor out if you do that. I'd stick with the basics on that.

Or do you mean the air purifier?

Sounds like the air filter. You can buy the 3 for 10 dollar ones or the ones that are 20 dollars a peice that filter out more stuff, as far as I know they don't limit air flow.

The more expensive ones are probably a waste of money if you don't clean your ducts first.

I was gonna bust your balls about physics but I'll just link this boring but informative article on the matter:
http://www.ontimeairfilters.com/air-filter-facts

Another thing to note is that a better filter will trap more stuff, restricting air flow even further "in time" - admittedly I don't know the time/air-flow degradation curve or anything so now I'm just talking out of school, or making a WAG as they say. So if you're lazy and change your filters infrequently, this is an especially bad idea. Having said that, the top notch filters just for allergy season may not be a bad compromise as long as you swap them out when it's all done.

Or just move to Florida.

don't forget in-line ozone and germicide light generators....

who is going to make a connected vac sensor to detect when the filter is getting clogged.

^ Less allergens in Florida? I guess I'll find out.

@fidodie why would you want an ozone generator? They work well at killing bugs in water but in air that's the last thing you want to be breathing.

it sounds cool, and helps fill that hole. ozonudon't... ???

i like the vac sensor tho...doesn't even need to be wireless.

@Norm, yeah, I think the air flow degradation curve would be low but you are correct, the filter cost way more and you need to change it much more often.

Has anyone mentioned eating local honey as a "cure" for allergies? It isn't w short term solution but if you eat local honey it supposedly helps your system build antibodies for the local allergens over time, like 2 years.

^ Ozone is one of the top pollutants monitored by EPA - if you're interested in scarring your lungs, putting an ozone generator in your house is a way to go.

Honey as a "cure" for allergies is an old wives tale. Any pollen you would eat would just get digested, totally bogus.

I don't seem to be really affected by pollen. But.. After riding CR on Tuesday, I had a very sore throat for a day. Is this why? No sneezing, no runny nose, no water eyes doe.

Same thing just happened to me. Rode 6mr last night and nose started to run on the way home. This morning woke up with a sore throat from post-nasal drip. This blows
