Peezy's Black Magic 2013

Damn, and I thought speed by gear ratio and cadence was geeky. Then, Utah took that up a notch and then f-odie just blew it into oblivion.

want to talk power curves?

btw - gear ratios are nice, anyone want to explain how to pick a crank arm length? (which changes the gearing just like tire size)
can 'see' the math, but have no clue on the bio-mechanics to quantify it

everyone likes cake

Physics is all fun and games until you get to particle physics.

And then the fun is gone.

Here's another question to consider in light of Fidodie's very cool explanation: what's the tipping point for a rider's power vs. wind resistance? It's kindo f the ultimate fitness question because it would tell us the maximum speed one could achieve under one's own power against a given wind resistance. We already know that if we control for wind resistance -- like on an indoor track -- a bigger rider is favored (as an example, all those gold medals around the neck of Christian Hoy.) And obviously, riders need some muscle to be effective, so simply saying that "lighter is better" is pretty incomplete. Consider instead: for any given magnitude of wind resistance, what is the maximally efficient size of the rider? You'd need a whole new equation for power as a function of muscle mass, but if you had it, you should be able to calculate the "ideal" size for a racer to go maximally fast (assuming that every ounce of muscle mass replaces an ounce of fat up to the point where you can minimize fat and still live, because you're still going to find that you want to be as light as possible with that ideal muscle mass.)

I would think it is more than just weight, muscle mass and power. Wouldn't mechanics/efficiency/power transfer play a part and be governed by length of leg bones (i.e. ratio of femur to tibia length)? Just a guess.

PS I hate physics

chemistry is the tough one - u seem ok there!

newtonian physics is, well, easy peasy....😉

would think different types of races require different muscle/body types to maximized power output without emptying the tank (bigger engine, more power, exhausts fuel faster)

i'm trying to find out how heavy eric heiden was in 1986 but

In his prime, Heiden, now 53 and an orthopedic surgeon, packed 185 pounds of finely tuned muscle on a 6-foot-1 frame. People stopped and stared at his massive 29-inch thighs, set below a 32-inch waist.

Riding a singlespeed is rough. Mandi wanted to ride CR so I figured I would keep the wheels moving on this singlespeed up there. Ran into woodsters group and headed out.

Man, CR is rough. Or is my Scalpel just that nice to ride here? I've unlearned a lot of singlespeed skills over the past year. It is really hard to keep the flow going uphill on the SS with the babyheads. I don't really miss this. If this is how Stewart was, I wouldn't even think about this race 😛

I get hung up on a couple of spots I would normally clear with gears, mostly because to momentum lost. It seemed like I kept falling in the cracks and getting jammed up. Gave more props to woody and Schilling for riding these things all the time. I say out loud up a climb "I'm not cut out for this shit anymore! Not sure how I did it for so long. Woody reminded me "you used to be!"

Eventually over on the IMBA trail I hear some creaking that sounds like the BB is moving, I keep pressing on and eventually my (Jay's) chain snaps. Woops. Woody saves the day and we are able to make it back to the lot without any issues.

That's five rides in a row for Mandi, which may be a record, we would have to go back to the books to look. I think she is going for six, because she made me take her helmet, bike and shoes out of the car today. I'm curious if I could top my record of 10 in a row this year. :hmmm: The hardest part is for sure keeping up with the laundry.

All the thoughts of putting a harder gear on here went out the window from this ride.... But then I remembered that the trail network and race course is buffed compared to CR. Then I remembered how fast Stewart was. Then I realized I am going to put a harder gear on. #YOLO. Mentally this was rough on my SS psyche (spelling?) but I think it did me some good.

No pictures, but I'm good for it. I promise.

I feel yah bruh. Rode my SS the other night at the Water Co. and it was rough as shit. Or maybe i just need a 21T for riding there? 32x18 through rock gardens and over boulders just wasn't working out for me very well. There was a time where the single speed was all I ever rode...

Wow what happen to you. Those gears made you a ***** ; ) i am the opposite of you don't like gears or suspension for that matter for xc riding. That is why i will be ridding that plastic geared thing i got soon. It gets zero use.

i went to lewis morris on the SS last night. this is my second ride on dirt using the SS set up. some of the steeper parts of the trail going up really had me working. my old SS that i had (about 7 years ago) was the same gearing and i took it everywhere.

last night i had couple spots where i thought i was not going to make it up. i've gotten soft. i made every climb last night, but i was definitely working on some of them. and LM is pretty buff in comparison to CR. can't wait for our night ride at CR 😱

i've just got no tolerance for rigid, single speed riding any more. my shoulder can't handle the hits and as i found out on Monday am, my ankle isn't what it was pre-infection.

i really want a couch to pedal so i'm holding out for s 650b FS. and i heard a rumor that i get a discount on Giant so...

Correction to Matty's statement: Those gears made you FAST

SS is stupid. I'm so glad I gave that up. Shout out to Norm who gave me gears AKA gave my back a few extra years.

I am going for number 6 today. Though I may just cruise along at 8mph and smell the roses.
