PSA: Remember to insure your bikes

Sorry to hear Segundo,
but if anyone can overcome this with a positive attitude,
it's you my man!

Not sure if we ever met but sorry for your losses and hoping you, your family, and community build back stronger and better! Your attitude is impressive to say the least! And I didn’t pickup that you moved to CO! Lastly, thanks for the reminder about proper property/contents insurance.

Sorry to hear this - but glad to hear the family is ok (and mending from the covid too)

I have some friends down in castle rock that are sports minded, and retired!
Let us know if you need anything, will coordinate through them.

Thank you Pat! Will do.

Hey @Pampa
I've seen people start some gofundme's. Let's help if we can!
Hey Manny, I just see your post. Yes, pretty much everyone that lost their home has one 🙂 We do too (here). This is helping a lot. We had insurance but found out we were grossly underinsured.

On the positive side, we signed a lease on a house not that far from where we lived - so kids can keep their schools, friends, etc. This is like winning the lottery these days. The house was posted after midnight and by 7am it had 4 applications in, without even seeing it. By 2pm they took it out of the market b/c they had so many applications in. We happen to know two people that knew the current tenant and the property manager and we got it.
Everyone is doing OK, but now that we are out of "triage" mode I'm starting to see some signs of stress/tiredness, on all of us. I think once we get out of the hotel and into the house this will get better.

I'm also realizing I need to deal with my self-imposed "bike withdrawal" 🙂 I've had offers to go for a ride and to lend me bikes but I can't get myself to do it yet. It's been painful to look at some of the remains of my bikes, tools and some other biking stuff. Not only the bikes, and not only because of their value, but also the stuff that accompanied me on some epic adventures and/or for a long time. In any case, not complaining here. I know there are people with much bigger problems than this. It will take me some time to get back into it, that's all.

Not trying to be pitiful about myself but this is how a carbon bike looks like after the fire. I guess is to be expected, but still shocked me. This one I could find because the firemen stop the fire on the wall this bike was hanged on the garage, from going onto the next house. The stuff below the chain is a XX1 crank arm.

I thought I'd share some very good news. I'm back on the road, and soon on the dirt as well 🙂

After the fire I couldn't even think about bikes. Just looking at people riding or seeing tracks in the snow reminded me of everything I lost and I just couldn't let go of that and focus on looking forward. I even exited all the FB groups that had to do with bikes/riding, stopped visiting this board, cancelled bike-related newsletters, etc. I did browse CL & FB for cheap used bikes but I couldn't find anything that I wanted to spend money on. Then last week I came across a FB post about a special sale of last year demo bikes for people that lost bikes in the fire at the Specialized Experience Center in Boulder (on a fire-related FB group), and I couldn't sleep that night thinking about getting a bike the next morning.

The sale started at 10am but I was at the door at 8:15am. The people of Spec looked at me funny 🙂 I knew they had ONE bike I was interested in, in my size, and I wanted to be sure I'd get a shot at it. Good thing I did that b/c another guy of similar build, looking for the same bike got there 2nd. I ended up getting a Stumpjumper S-Works! I was hoping to get an Epic Evo to replace the one I bought last year but someone snatched that before the sale.

My wife came with me and she got a Specialized Levo Expert - the only one they had for sale. We had been talking about her getting an electric bike so we could ride together but it was never a good time to buy that. She's very happy with it. We did a couple of rides and on climbs she pulls away without even noticing in Eco-mode. Now I need to buy her armor to get her more comfortable riding trails.

This was the BEST thing I did since the fire. Totally unplanned purchase, and I know many people think I should be spending money on bikes now, but this just changed how I feel. Of course, now I'm thinking about upgrades, picking up a race, etc. which I don't really have time or money for, but it's nice to think about this anyway 🙂

I'd stay off that Levo if I were you, haha...

Hello @Pampa

Not sure we met but I am a brand Ambassador for Pactimo cycling clothing company and they announced this program to offer folks a grant and store credit/discounts for any cyclist effected by the fire.

I immediately thought of you and perhaps you can share this with other cyclists that you know if the company allows it. I don’t make any kickbacks or extra discounts for this just hoping this helps a fellow cyclist after such a horrendous loss. Your spirit and attitude about the whole thing is very admirable not sure I could ever manage something like this happening to me and my family.

If there’s any spot to fill in how you heard about this PM me and I will send you my contact details as a Brand Ambassador.

Good luck and stay safe and well.

Wow! This is awesome! Thank you for thinking of me! I'll fill the form right now, and I'll pass it over to other cyclists I know whose house burned. People like you, companies like Pactimo, institutions like the Red Cross and many more are making this less daunting/painful that what it would be without this support.

This is very timely too, now that I have a bike 🙂

BTW, I don't think we've met, so nice to e-meet you 🙂
