Keep that lock ring right and remember to check it once in a while ...

My perception of the sound that made when it first slipped into that position gives me the chills ...

That happens often with alloy cassette bodies. Too soft to handle the load. The middle cogs that are not joined together will often do this.

In a worst-case scenario, use two chain whips (in opposing directions) to break it free. I am curious to read other suggestions other than "pry apart with screwdriver" or "hit with mallet".

Flip the wheel so the cassette is on the other side. Sawp cranks to the other side. Pedal backwards until it comes loose. Works everytime.

You like to ratchet your pedals alot?

Yep. Track stands at just about every red light. Some ratcheting going on there 😱

You know how this is going to end though, right? Standing on a climb, cassette body snaps, my nuts meet the stem and/or top tube 🙁

yes, but the entertainment value for us, and being able to tell the story of shredding a cassette at some point in your biking life is worth those few minutes of pain.
