Sourlands Mountain Preserve Conditions

Just got back and same info as snashters. Should be totally solid tomorrow morning and worth the drive.

Yup. Left the lot at about 8:30 this morning, and it was mostly frozen, save for the sections with running water. Tonight's supposed to be cold so tomorrow, early should be good.

Conditions were excellent when I started around 1:30pm today. With the exception of a tiny bit of mud in a few spots, everything was frozen solid.

I bet the upper trails will be great for the weekend and the lower ones will still be soggy

Bingo. I was out there this morning and this pretty much sums it up. My advice is to take the pipeline up to the upper trails. Much of the lower ones has the consistency of chocolate pudding and it's not going to get that cold at night this weekend to firm things up.

Sourlands is the complete opposite of 6Mile. It's super rocky, technical and it's on a big hill. It's also super fun yet punishing.

gonna try to hit sourlands on sunday morning - been spending time at 6mile and harts - any comparisons or advice

If you haven't done a ton of technical riding just take your time to keep your patience. Also go clockwise. Start with the trail that starts behind the pond and turn left.

And when he says super rocky, think as rocky as can be. I would say if your not a high int might want to pass on sourlands. Its out of most people's league. If u do try it out just take easy your 1st loop. When u leave you will def be a better rider. 🙂

We might get a little rain/snow Wednesday but the upper trails seem to drain quickly, relative to the rest of CNJ. I did clockwise laps this weekend taking the pipeline up and it was mostly all good to go.

The pipeline can be a pretty beastly climb at certain points, but it's well worth the effort. I started coming here to avoid the six mile and chimney rock mud but now I'm just hooked on rocks..

cool thanks guys - sounds like it will be alot of fun - looking to mix it up - i love 6 and harts but to me the more choices i have the better

edit: couple questions-

-the map i found looks pretty good - is it easy to follow (meaning are the trails well marked)

-watching some vids on youtube it def looks rocky and pretty challenging - is that just those 2 sections on the map indicating boulders or is the whole trail system pretty well rocky

thanks in advance

The trails are pretty well marked. There are only a few different blazes in the place. The bottom of the mountain is pretty much roots and it usually is muddier. The rocks show up a couple times on the bottom trails but up top, aside from a few stretches of dirt they are pretty much everywhere. The spots on the park map with rocks are actually only pointing out the areas where the rocks are the size of cars and buses, not your typical rock garden sized rock.

If you're comparing miles at hart compared to here, expect it to take twice as long to do one mile here. 3 mph is a good avg speed here.

i think i'm gonna try it - no shame in hopping off and hiking with the bike where my skills arent sufficient - it sounds beautiful and i'm pretty chilled out in my riding style - i just like being outdoors and getting a good workout - not much concern for pace

i also ride only rigids so i'm sure this place will beat me to hell - but then again - i kinda like that 😉

That's the right attitude to have. You will have a blast.
It certainly is beautiful up there. 🙂
