Sourlands Mountain Preserve Conditions

Recent rains = more pickers, but the good news it pickers beget berries - stopped to clean up some dead branches on red and they were everywhere... yum

i should add that i ran into a group of hikers who have a Girl Scout that is interested in adding numbers at the unmarked intersections.
Pointed them to Ranger Chris to start. Not quite sure if that was right - but it should work.

They do look good.
I hiked here today, the rocks and roots were very slick after last night's storm. Not much in the way of mud or standing water. Ran across a couple guys trying to ride up Boulderama. Fortunately for them they were closer to the bottom so I told them there's a better route to this great park going clockwise. They turned around and took my advice. First timers, so it seemed obvious to them to start up the rocks.

This morning's conditions are pretty good. No standing water or mud. The wood bridges are pretty slimy though, so approach with caution.

Pat and I took a loop and there a few blow downs. One on Montezumas which a bow saw could do, and one in the middle of the C trail between Montezumas and Boulderama which is big - chainsaw big. I think there was a third one somewhere around Three Amigos but I don't remember exactly where.

it was between the 4 way, and the fence on C i think? didn't we ride around it?

WHAT? please tell me where to find these. My daughter loves raspberries! Be great excuse to get out and pick her some

Primo conditions right now. Tho a few more trees down. Hacked one with the silky saw, another on the C trail I gave up as it kept pinching my saw

PS I expected a fairytale land of mushrooms but hardly any. And the berries be gone too

Forgot to mention until I read 6mr conditions, also found some broken glass in the trail around roaring rocks. I picked up the worst of it, don't think it was intentional, probably kids drinking there

Big dead tree down on red between roaring rocks and the C trail connector. Already a decent ride around so probably ok to leave it.

Two more trees down on white going clockwise - one at 0.5 miles, the other at 1.5. Both unrideable. A handsaw could probably take out the one at 1.5, the other will need a chainsaw. Otherwise, even these evening thunderstorms are getting soaked up by the heat - very little water/mud

Ranger Chris was right yesterday when he said a hiker gave him a map with a bunch of downed trees - there are a few. First a big one on white half way between end of red and the C trail. Then going down C trail that one big tree that's been there for awhile. Past that, I ran into this:

The little bridge is beat to hell and a board busted but salvageable. This tree blocks even more of the trail past the bridge - a real mess.

Bone dry

My family and my brother's family went for a fantastic hike yesterday. The 4 and 6 year old neice and nephew hiked for 2.5 hrs. Climbed nearly every rock and plenty stops. My 2- yo walked the last 30min or so. It was awesome!

On the other hand , I really came to post about the following. When we took our much deserved lunch break at the trail head after our hike I see a man walk out with a hybrid. I say man, that guy had no idea. NBD, okay he learn his lesson. Then I see a woman walk out with a legit road bike. I lol'd. Then as we were walking back to the car, the same man and woman are arguing about how she couldn't keep up and he was very fustrated with her. I am speechless.

I normally ride sun up weekdays at sourlands, but can only do a Saturday afternoon ride. How busy does park get with hikers and dog walkers? Should I go to the rock instead?

afternoons on a beautiful day can get CRAZY with the amount of people on the trail. i don't like to be on the trail any time after 9am on the weekends. its just too many people.
