Once the fork preload is set and the bars are tightened is the stem cap basically only a dust cover? I saw that on a aftermarket sellers web site.
After preloaded and stem bolts are tight, yes just a cover. It is also protection from dripping sweat and rain.
Try to pull it out. I'll give you a dollar! There is no way a star nut wih lil metal fins pressed inside a smooth steer tube has any kind of structural importance to the headset short of setting preload.
This just proves that the cap will indeed hold the fork over rough terrain for extended periods of time without the star nut sliding out of the fork. Thanks bro!😉Lower your stem past the top of the steer set your preload and go for ride without getting fork play, I'll give you $2. Oh wait....I know this guy who did that, @1sh0t1b33r
How else would I know what I drink?

I actually don't drink this. It just says my name and is from the Philippines. It's kind of cheap tasting.

Star nut? What kind of pauper uses a metal steerer where you can use a star nut? Carbon steerer man.
Clever girl.My steer has carbon, just not the fibery fancy kind 🙂
Ben beat me to it.That dust cover will prevent you from castrating your self in a crash. No joke. Same reason we put plugs at the end of handlebars. Google bar end injury.
guy at my job took a bar end to the mouth, busted his grill and lipsBen beat me to it.
