Tariffs...what to make of them.

So glad trump backed Jack! Really sealed the deal for Mikie. I'd like to Thank Him For His Attention In This Matter
100% agree this sealed the deal, but I think this is signaling a broader rejection of the republican gutting of services and the partisan finger blaming BS. In Bridgewater the town council has been red forever, and 3 seats got flipped to democrats. I don’t think this is an isolated occurrence.

Phase 1 of the Democrat's "Project 2026" complete.

Losing the centerists.
They couldn't get on-board with the crazy libs agenda - but plowing over a rose garden, building a giant ballroom, then shutting down subsidized programs (which they might need or know people who need them) doesn't work either.

The edges that blame the "others" - the middle blames those in power.

Expand on this. I'd love to hear what policy the democrats have done that has been crazy.

Should have put a smiley -
I'm very liberal - I understand why Immigration, BLM, and LGBTQ issues are incredibly important.

It was too front and center of a campaign issue - and the more the Republican Candidates pushed, the Dems pushed back.
they didn't have too - all they needed to do was say we represent everyone - and push back that issue.
'You aren't going to represent "them"?' (a little punny, but not really intended that way at all)

Trump won because of the lack of a viable opponent this round, and it was a vote against Hillary last time.
They pushed illegal workers as criminals
They claimed that all illegals in the country would leave or be kicked out, and the border would be secure,
returning jobs to Americans. Sounds good, probably polls really well too!
LGBTQ issues were consuming way too many public resources (I may agree) - I do not agree that resources should be cut to zero, like it doesn't really exist.
BLM was about freeing/not-pursuing criminals (nope)
Homeless people are all drug addicted.

It is how the republican platform framed the democrats, backed the candidates into a corner, and didn't let them out.
us v. them - you are either with us, or against us.
The size of the old east wing ballroom was embarrassing. we will build the best one ever. spin it!

Reagan was an actor.
Is Trump and actor or business person?

I believe in the goodness of people - they won't let other people starve.

hopefully I live another 10 years or maybe more to see how this all ends.
Just the pendulum swinging way too far one way, after it swung way too far the other.

Maybe the $ are offset by the amount they're saving by not paying furloughed govt employees? I'm starting to envy third world countries with their straightforward economic problems and garden variety corruption...

Except current law guarantees furloughed federal employees back pay as if they had been working . So it's spending govt money and getting nothing from it

This is the main issue, us against them, until something changes with that, we are going to have these swings back and forth for a long time.

Newsome is more of a centrist. Lacks the international experience.
California economy is larger than most nations, should be good there.
A little ways off yet.

Yet tRump being tRump and not liking to pay what is due has mentioned that furloughed employees may not get paid.

unfortunatley for him based on current law his shenanigans would likely delay the backpayment (which still isnt good) but it seems unlikely the supreme court is going to let him with-hold payment when HE is the one who signed the law guaranteeing the backpay. . . .he may be able to change the law back to what it was (for future shutdowns, bc apparently this is a thing now) but its highly unlikely (from everything i have heard from official channels) that backpay will be with-held from this one.

If you collect unemployment while you're furloughed, do you have to pay it back if you eventually collect back pay? Asking for 650,000 friends.

Yes.

See also the deferred resignation program ("fork in the road") which took money from government programs to pay people not to work for ~6-9 months. Efficiency!

Im sure part of this tactic is to force people to quit and in that process will lose more good employees. I work with people from the federal highway administration, its been like a mass exodus from there this year.
