Tariffs...what to make of them.

Ok, he’s nothing compared to those who came before him 😉

And what @thegock wrote is extremely offensive. I don’t think I am (or my wife, or anybody I know that voted similarly) are any of those things and it’s disturbing he believes that
It's because some people find it extremely hard to believe that someone who doesn't fit at last one of those categories would ever vote for him. What made you cast your vote that way?

Lol, definitely not any of the ugly things he wrote about

Ouch…that’s what you all think of anyone who didn’t vote how you liked?

I’m a big fan of the tariffs and. This is a part of the correction for decades of psychotic politicians using the US and the world as tools for corruption, disguised by telling desperate and gullible believers the exact things they want to hear.

A lot of folks (about half, I think) drink the political cool-aide and minimal benefits they use to (just) keep the believers on the hook.

And they use hate to rile-up their followers because they eat it up and are looking to be self righteous and hateful
No, Mr. Slug we need to have more selective Tariff's like the steel industry and advanced weapons chips, we need for self-defense and our own security. We are not going back to toys, clothes, and residential electronics. We have to train the next generation for the next 2 big industries AI data mining and crypto mining these to industries use huge amounts of electricity. Our electric grids are way short of generation. These 2 will need a lot of building trades people to build power generation stations whether it will be fossil fuels or nuclear power plants which I am in favor of just because it cuts down on greenhouse gasses and there not without their own problems. Wind and solar good but they can't produce enough electricity. If you see the latest surveys people say let us, bring back manufacturing but they won't work in them.

I have to wait until I can find a keyboard for a response. Typing on the phone is tedious.

I am curious, though, of all of your thoughts on my view once I get to that keyboard

I believe it’s important not to name call when talking politics and to be open minded

I did use sarcasm because you go by SLug. My plumbers humor is bad sometimes. Sorry. It was funny in my own mind but There is a lot going on in there.

Of the half that voted for trump, how many actually follow the news? All the trump voters that I know personally just say all the news is fake so they get all their info from social media. How is that being politically educated? Just had a friend tell us that we have nothing to worry about with the tariffs unless we shop on Alibaba or Temu since only the cheap Chinese junk is getting tariffs. This is what they actually believe. WTF. These tariffs are going to put us into a recession, that is not just a typical correction.

Tell me, why are you a big fan of the tariffs? Are they to equal the playing field? Are they to bring back manufacturing jobs that will be filled by robots? Are they just a negotiation tactic?

Ok, here it goes:

When it comes to politics (and most observations of people) my thoughts and views are derived from watching the actions of our government, not based on political speak from our politicians and news. Although, I listen to the big 3 (Fox, CNN, and MSNBC) as well as the new influencer media (The Young Turks, Joe Rogan, Candace Owens, etc…there are a TON of them) and then make up or change my mind from considering all views. Everyone should do the same if you want to be credible by not falling for the cherry picked and molded narratives of the news and the politicians

My politics: I’m registered as an independent, but lean right.

My Education: Geotechnical Engineering, magna cum laude. I’m not an economist, but have observed the trends and read about it quite a bit for decades (I’m in my mid-40’s).

Food for thought for anyone that’s unaware: Our current economy used to be based on gold, but now it is backed by good faith. Essentially, our dollar is artificially valued. https://www.federalreserve.gov/faqs/currency_12770.htm

Tariffs - I think these are (likely) a good idea to implement the way they are because they are very skewed away from us right now. I don’t fully understand why our tariffs aren’t reciprocal in the first place. I can only imagine it’s to unethically buy influence by our government, in addition to several other ways. I’d rather have no tariffs or equal tariffs. The method of negotiating these tariffs are not likely what many, if not most, think. The chaos is a purposeful tactic that everyone falls for and panics. Underneath the chaos is a plan that includes chaos because it makes understanding the chaos-creator (made up word) very difficult. This gives the chaos-creator the upper hand because everyone is confused. The chaos is so uncomfortable and everyone wants it to end as quickly as possible, therefore, benefiting the chaos-creator (the U.S.). However, the chaos-creator must have some spine and strength to follow through. I imagine it’s like riding a mtb down a hill of rocks…..it’s not easy, but you have to commit or you will likely get hurt or not have fun (the benefit) of riding down the rocks.

Also, we have several several several trillions in debt to external entities, how else will it be paid other than eliminating excess spending, such as on unbalanced tariffs, foreign aid, etc. I know it’s hard to pay debt, but grow up. The solution isn’t always easy, fun, and immediate. Our economy is sick/injured and needs to be treated. No other modern President before has been successful in paying the national debt (no, not Clinton, that was congress and it wasn’t the national debt, just a balanced budget) that I’m aware of. I’m pretty certain it’s because they didn’t care or they wanted to stay in a powerful government position and promise more of our artificially valued currency.

The problem is, society (overall) wants immediate satisfaction and would rather remain sick/injured than do what’s needed to become well. The immediate satisfaction is why things are the way they are; massive debt, political violence, the chilling effect on free speech and differing opinions, to name a few.

While I am gullible when it comes to sarcasm @John the Plumber, I am usually pretty good at picking out the wolves among the sheep. Our government is almost entirely made of wolves (very bad people who are likely and literally psychotic) who say the nicest and the right things to put voters in their purses like pets (please stop falling for it in ANY party). They also spew hyperbole so much, that people (like on here) regurgitate those same untrue ideas, like that everyone who votes for Trump is in a cult who hates others based on race, religion, etc. It’s not even close to true and you should be ashamed if you believe that.

There are so many confused and unintelligent people out there in all parties in all politics. I would guess it’s not isolated to voting for one or the other. I don’t look at them as shitty people because they don’t fully understand, but more like children who need mature and sincere guidance.

It’s sad to see the true colors of many of you are so ugly and do not consider the opinions of others in a problem-solving way, but assume the worst with nothing but exaggerated info, regurgitated talking points, youtube videos and memes to back it up. I hope not all cyclists in MTB NJ are not so close minded and tribal at the expense of progress.

For fun, here are the neuro-diverse conditions I think our last few presidents have had:

Trump: Extreme Narcissist
Biden: Sociopath
Obama: Psychopath
W. Bush: Sociopath
B. Clinton: Extreme Narcissist
Bush: Psychopath
Reagan: Hard to figure out, but probably some combination of the above
Carter: Extreme Narcissist

I Think Trump is doing what he is doing because he wants to prove (and rub it in their faces) that he can run the country better than anyone else in modern times after the insults and lawfare from Obama/Clinton/Bush/bureaucrats, news, comedians, etc. Even though it is for his legacy, it will benefit our country more than any of the others, because they just wanted the power, whereas trump wants the power and the legacy more than the others. He may even care a little. Also, after they tried to jail him, that supercharged his focus. In my opinion, it would have been ok to jail him if everyone who was trying to jail him were held to following the law, but they all get away with hurting the population (fraudWasteAbuse, constant deceit, buying votes with social programs, committing felonies haphazardly with audacity) without accountability. I’ve been stewing on accountability for years and years and desperately want to see it. I’m not a Trumpian, but admire his approach with spine and transparency.

To conclude (whew) If any of my objective info is incorrect, such as our currency value or budget talk, I will gladly look up your reference and admit my mistake. And this is probably the most I have ever written at once without submitting it for a grade.

I wrote this earlier, but you didn't pick-up on it. The president doesn't have unilateral power in the Constitution Article 1 Section 8 gives the congress the power to apply tariffs. I was listening to CNBC about the market melt down again it looks like a one man made his name is Trump. When hoover was President they had the Smoot Hawley Tariff Act which basically caused the great depression. You are giving Trump to much credit. he doesn't know what he is actually know anything about economics. Being a retired union guy, I didn't vote for Clinton the second time because of NAFTA. I saw the slow move from manufactures making materials we used from Mexico, South America and South Korea. We should bring back some of the ones I wrote on the last post. I would also like to see us bring back pharmaceuticals, too. If you didn't know there were a lot of plants in New Jersey. Plumbers are problem solvers unlike congress; I always try to think on how we can improve our way of living.
Now about the debt the tax breaks always go to the billionaires, corporations and the top1%. taxes on them have to be raised. The tariffs aren't going to raise revenue to give them the tax cuts they want. It is only going to increase inflation and add another $5 to $7 trillion to the debt.

I just started a beer and will look at this in more detail later. I want to look some of this up before a real response. At first glance, though, you make some good points
