Tariffs...what to make of them.

daddy backing down off 145
but daddy....you told me you were bringing my factory yobs back!

I first heard this story on breaking points...the WSJ reported it...I dont have a subscription so im linking this story that cites it....but this is crazy

According to The Wall Street Journal, Bessent, joined by Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, waited until Navarro was tied up in another meeting. They quickly arranged an emergency conversation with Trump, explained the risks of financial collapse, and stayed until Trump composed a Truth Social post suspending the tariffs.

Thus did Bessent out-play both Musk and Navarro, in service of more prudent policies. I have no inside information, but it’s likely that Bessent is also one of those dissuading Trump from trying to fire Fed Chair Jay Powell. On Bloomberg TV last week, Bessent described monetary policy as “a jewel box that has to be preserved,” adding that he had “no concern” that Trump was trying to oust Powell.

So basically you have as musk calls him "Peter Retardo" in the presidents ear telling him to stay the course on Tariffs.....meantime, the bond market is crashing and Bessant/Lutnick are freaking out...so they send Navarro to some meeting, then run in and explain to trump how bad shit is....then he pauses the tariffs....

We are all on this bus being driven by a blind authoritarian dipshit...surrounded by a whole gang of dipshits telling him which way to steer...

I have been looking at an MRP damper cartridge for my old 36 on the meat powered bike. Price just jumped from $350is to $420 ish! This trump sh*t is getting expensive. I think going forward trump voters should hand you money and apologize whenever asked. They wanted to drink liberal tears, I hope that was worth an empty wallet.🤬

So when the tariffs get pulled back in a few weeks, will these prices go back down? I am guessing they will not.

Keep in mind that Trump may be responsible for some part of this stuff rising in price. But these middlemen and retailers use any opportunity to amplify it. If a retailer pays $10 more for something they feel it's ok to charge $15 more for that thing.

Fuck 'em all. I highly encourage people to pull back spending right now across the board and put your money into, at the very least, a high yield savings account and try to enjoy the shit you have, as opposed to buying stuff hand over fist like we all tend to normally do.

Except Ikon passes. I hope you renewed before the prices went up a few days ago.

The possibility of tariffs forces higher prices. If you import a container for a quantity of “x” and you expect the next container to cost (x+145%), should your selling prices stay the same on the first container? You would have to be an moron not to raze prices because of the possibility of higher cost to replace inventory.

Bikes were overpriced before this shit show and now everything even more expensive? Good luck to to bike companies surviving this.

Nope, they aren't coming back down similar to Covid price increases.

Well, it depends on how the company is treating the tariffs. As much as I dislike Specialized's business practices they are just adding a separate Tariff line item to the invoice to be passed on to the consumer. So theoretically if the tariff goes away, so will that line item. I think this is better than just playing with the retail prices.

I think you misunderstood my point.
  • China sells you something for $10
  • You sell it to me for $20
  • China raises the price to $15
  • You could raise the price to $25
  • But instead, you raise the price to $30
Before Trump you were making $10 for each sale
Now you make $15, but you blame Trump for the entire price increase

I, as the consumer, say fuck you both and boy none of it. So you then make $0 off me.

Agreed. I do think that they are doing the right thing here. And this will be rare.

They seem to do 20% off Black Friday etc type deals. May want to just wait until President's day or something.

They also just came out with a new revision of those and may be part of the price increase.

MACCA… make America clear cut again… seems trump hates trees, PA is going to loose 60% of the trees in the national forest…

China is not increasing prices, trump is. I am sure some corporations will in take advantage and add to their profit margins, corporations are by their very definition sociopaths. The addition of the import tax or the chance one will be applied is the root cause of the price increase.

Kind of interesting that if you bypass the middle man and order China direct as a consumer, there’s no increase at all. Airwolf, Nextie, Light Bicycle, etc, are all the same price.

I thought they were trying to change that with the known Temu bypass
