The 2025 Lawn Thread

Five crab apples again. Looks tiny compared to the others, but It's a good sized tree. Looks a little better in person than in photo. Got a white flowering variety that blooms about the same time as the others. I figure I can replace with the same variety if (when) I lose the others.

Problem with replacing is there were still roots in the ground. It pretty much had to go where the old one was for spacing. A combo of loppers and pick axe took care of the roots. It was not easy.

My tree guys said to twice as wide the depth as the root ball. Looks like you'll need a few more cans. Back breaking work, but satisfying when they bloom each year.

A rule of thumb, maybe. I went down 18". That left a few inches of root ball above ground, but I wanted to plant up a little. Width of hole was fine.

This isn't my first rodeo. I've planted about 40 trees on this property over the years. Blank slate when I started, so most of those were in the first few years. They all survived the transplant process. Digging in this red shale is hell. I don't know how the trees grow in it.

I'm letting it grow for a few weeks. I am of the low maintenance school: it grows, I mow. I am more strategic than tactical. I'm now letting the grass go to seed. If I mow every week the dandelions will still go to seed, but the grass never will. That's a losing battle. So I am skipping a few weeks, the grass gets tall, and produces seeds which over seed the yard. I do the same when the clover flowers. I'll likely have to mow the same area with multiple passes once I resume mowing, but I will be getting lots of free grass and clover seeds.

Is it only me who's getting severe overgrowth this year? Weeds everywhere and we just laid down 4" of mulch with Preen. We have lots of hostas all around and this year they are already massive and taking over.PXL_20250518_174436402.MP.jpgPXL_20250519_002241679.MP.jpg

Well, after 3.5 years of no maintenance and no issues, i finally had one with my EGO mower. Well, really just the battery. 1 battery seems to have gone bad (just a few months after the 3-year warranty is up of course). Charger says it's fully charged. Put it in the mower and it last all of a couple seconds before mower says "battery is dead" with the red light and stops. I have a 2nd battery which works fine so i know it's the 1 battery and not the mower. Bought a new battery today but holy crap they're expensive ($250!). Any ideas for this bad battery?
