The Indoor Cyclist's support thread

For Zwift I think connecting with AppleTV makes a huge difference. I can be up and riding in a minute or 2 with a click of the remote
100% true same here. Sometimes even less time than that. No more searching for sensors or boot up time everything’s just on. Game changer. Literally.

Apple tv can't deal with all the sensors in some cases? Running companion app on cell, not sure if it needs to be iphone

Also cool cause it has second screen controls and info. Esp for structured workouts

My current setup. Running an iPad Mini for TR and an old Surface Pro for entertainment. JetBlack Volt (Zwift Hub is a rebranded JB) as my trainer. Certainly doesn't have to be extravagant.

Proof is in the pudding. Starting from a 245 FTP post surgery I spent all of the Spring on the trainer and most of the Summer mixing in Indoor rides getting back up to fitness. It just works.

If think you need to run all the sensors thru the companion app because the Apple TV has limited Bluetooth connections

this is true in some cases depending on what trainer/devices you are running.

Zwift made some update not too long ago that doesn't require me to use Companion app anymore but I am not sure what changed. Note that my setup is on the "older" side with a CycleOps Magnus wheel on trainer, plus my HRM. Even when I was bridging via the companion app, it was still pretty much flawless.

A bit late to the party, but yeah a iPad or Apple TV with a cheap TV (open box from Best Buy) is the best route to go, I have been using my iPad going on 5 years now and it's quick and great.

if you didnt already see this (unlikely) Zwift is doing a bunch of cool stuff for the 10 year anniversary.

I was on the Beta when the original Jarvis island was the only course available. Pretty cool they brought it back with some other things.

Yeah, rode it this morning. It was neat. I missed the beta so I was jazzed to learn it was coming back. It was a lot of fun…the first few laps. But 10 times? Less so. I guess I should’ve read the route description first 😳. Oh well 🤷‍♂️

Old school. I wasn’t part of the very first beta group as you needed some kind of invite. But when it opened up more I got in pretty early and didn’t pay anything probably for a year.

Strava didn’t have any ability to post pics back then either so all the rides look like the shape of a “plug” 🤪

Planning to give Rouvy a free try before committing to Zwift for the season. Anyone have recent experience with Rouvy and comparisons to Zwift? Is the pricing comparable?

Sweet because I low-balled him and he accepted so it’s coming 😂
just saw this was gonna say an AppleTV setup would be cheaper and you can set up an old TV as a monitor. But yeah this should work find for an all in one solution especially if you lowballed him down to around $200 which is the most I would have offered.

Giving it a whirl for a free week. Easier install and setup than Zwift. Only did a quick tutorial ride and was quite boring. Not sure if I can handle riding indoors for a few months. Was only able to do 6 weeks with Zwift a few years back before quitting.

Short and difficult workouts are easier to manage indoors. Just riding aimlessly in some virtual world is boring no matter what you do. 30-45 minutes of tough intervals will make a bigger improvement in your fitness than the aimless riding.

Indoors might just not be for you, but there are several different paths to try. Just riding around, riding in a group ride, racing, pre-planned training sessions. With any luck, you'll get sucked in by one of those things and 60 minutes won't feel like 600. Even 30 minutes is much more than zero.

I got sucked into holding onto people that are way faster for 10 minutes, then 15.... then hook up with the next big group.
the other thing I did was structured workouts or JRA while watching something stupid - try Chicago Party Aunt.
ignore everyone around ya.

of course this kinda defeats the purpose of group riding apps since that is possible with just a head unit or phone controlling the trainer.
One other thing I liked was simulating a familiar route. Load it into my wahoo elemnt, it puts the map up and controls the trainer based on grade.
Visualizing the ride is easy.

Rouvy day 2, seems I need to do some type of calibration to my trainer or maybe it's just my old setup. It's an old Kurt Kinetic, but with a Lezyne speed sensor since I can't seem to get the speed sensor on the KK to work. Rode definitely faster than the 46 rpm average posted and others were passing me like I was standing still. I usually drop to a high gear on the hills to simulate a climb. I know, not realistic but that's what was doing before with a real dumb trainer. I'd hate to invest in a smart trainer as I'm not sure it's even for me.
