The IPA Thread

as indicated previously, Smuttynose IPA and Dogfish Head 60 min are in my "top 6"

last night, for the first time, I had one right after the other in a single sitting and let me say....

Smuttynose was far better. much more interesting, complex flavor. made the DogfishHead 60 seem rather dull in comparison.

now that Smuttynose has conquered Dogfish Head 60, I think I need to have a "taste off" to determine which IPA reigns supremes.

the challengers...

* Weyerbacher Double Simcoe IPA
* Dogfish Head Aprihop
* Terrapin Hopsecutioner
* Stone IPA

I like this idear a lot... My only suggestion is to let each one sit so that the hops can come out... Too cold waters the flavor down

Weyerbacher "Crimson" IPA Project #5

So, last night on the way home I stopped at the High Street Grill in Mt Holly. They have Weyerbacher "Crimson" IPA Project #5 on tap. It's really good. Poured a slightly hazy deep orange with a nice respectable head that had staying power. Noticeable lacing. Aroma is soft with just a note of hops. Over the lips and into the mouth the hops are concealed. Very smooth and drinkable. All the hop comes on the tail end. 8.5 out of 10. Worth a try for sure.

If you are in the area of Canal's in West Windsor is so worth stopping in to get some Firestone Walker Double Jack... This is without a doubt the best IPA I have tasted... BLOWS away anything DogFish or Stone has put out,imo

That is an extremely bold statement. I think Stone is one of those brewerys that can do no wrong. Their standard IPA is excellent... much better than dogfish 60 in my opinion. Stone Ruination is downright delicious.

I've never heard of Firestone beer. I'll have to keep an eye open for it.

Don't mind Spencer, he tends to be extreme on everything he has an opinion on. Chalk it up to being around French fries all day.

As bold as it is, I believe it... I hope you can find some🙂

+1 to this. Totally agree. Its hard to not like Stone, if you have a taste for hop forward ales.

Great beer is great beer. At this level, it comes down to personal preference.

The Wonderturtle IPA Challenge:

think I posted this in another thread...

but Dogfish Head went down again. this time:

Weyerbacher Double Simcoe IPA defeated Dogfish Head 90 Minute.

compared to theWeyerbacher, the Dogfish Head 90 minute IPA just seemed bitter for the sake of being bitter WITHOUT THE REWARD of the complex delicious IPA flavor of the Weyerbacher. tasted a little burnt.

DogfishHead makes very good beers. unfortunately their beers have been up against some real heavyweights. if i was doing this right I'd put them in brackets (liket he NCAA tourney). In this way, I would have put the DogfishHead beers as pretty high seeds and they wouldnt have had to face-off against Smuttynose and Weyerbacher until later rounds.

i DEMAND this get done. start your own thread, pick a bunch that have been mentioned and seed them. this would be interesting as hell.

too bad fred doesn't drink anymore. in the old days we could have got him to do the entire thing in one sitting.

Fred drinks plenty still.

Suggestion? Get 3 or 5 people do this with 16 beers and have a legit tournament. Odd number of people to avoid ties.

yeah, I'll do it. perhaps each week I'll pick a beer-to-beer match-up and those participating would have to buy those beers, do a beer-to-beer comparison - the IPA with the most votes that week moves on to the next round until an "IPA Champion" is crowned.

I'll start a new thread asking for suggested IPA's. Thinking a 16-beer field would be reasonable. I'll seed them based on their rating in BeerAdvocate.com or some other site.

spencer - that is no comparison. Cricket Hill is undrinkable swill. although if you see the list in the link below I purposely tried to include a few NJ and PA brews.

Yeah I disagree with that as well as Weybacher being better than Dogfish but that's ok... I hate cucumbers and most people like them

in Colorado we had an ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS IPA. New Belgium - Ranger IPA (makers of Fat Tire Ale). Fat Tire Ale, imho, is...eh. but their IPA is delicious! very, very flavorful without being overly bitter. might be my favorite IPA ever.

unfortunately it is not distributed in NJ...I checked. 🙁 sold in Maryland. I am sad.

They have a trippel that makes my mouth water just thinking about it.
I like them on Facebook. Seems like they are expanding their distribution area. But who knows if they'll ever make it to NJ???
