the new giant xtc 29er

As of January 10th rock shox is making the reba available with the tapered steerer. I'm pretty sure that the they will have the tapered steerer version available in white and black with a standard quick release and only in black for the 20mm thru axle. I wanted a white fork but I also wanted the thru axle so I ordered the white non tapered thru axle version and ordered the white tapered steerer uppers seperately. It's costing more but it's exactly what I want (I don't like fox forks). I'm pretty sure the rest of the suspension companies will be releasing tapered steerer forks in the very near furure, I'm starting to notice the tapered head-tubes on a lot of bikes. You can also run a bigger bearing in the bottom and use a standard 1-1/8in steerer fork, just without the benefits of the tapered steerer.
The XTC 29ers use a 15mm thru axle wheel/fork combo. In any case if you're planning on upgrading the fork you might as well just get the 29er-1 when you consider cost.

Well, the xtc 2 is cheaper for a reason. The fork, wheels, brakes and drivetrain are all lower grade than the xtc 1. There is roughly a $700 difference between the two bikes, buying a new Fox fork(for instance) will cost that much alone. Then add all the other goodies and it all adds up.

Trust me, Im the last person to be talking about upgrades. Just trying to help out.🙂 Buy what you want and enjoy!

no i hear what ur sayin i was just bustin...when ur just messin around lookin for some ideas...u get some people that wanna say JUST RIDE IT.. yea i no that buyin a cheaper bike an changing everything around is a huge waste of money..believe me in no...thats half the fun ..no.. if i bought lets say one of the best bikes out i hate to say it but id prolly still change thing around...
heck ive noticed alot of people buyin a new bike and before they even walk out the store with the bike there changing all sorts of stuff....then they sell the stuff to someone like me for alot less...
but any how i do appreciate ur ideas an insight...u prolly have much more experience and no alot more about biking then i do ty

Just to give you an idea, my Large XTC 29er-2 is 30 pounds. My Large Trance X1 is 28.5 pounds.

Anyone know the weight of the XTC 29er-1 ?

According to my bathroom scale (which always seems to show 5 lbs. more than actual whenever I'm on it) my XTC 29-1 weighs in at 25 lbs.

What size, and any mods?
Medium. I replaced the OEM seat post with a Thomson setback post, larger rotors with adapters, replaced stock grips with Ergons, replaced the large chainring with a bash guard, and replaced the stock saddle with WTB Pure V.

Fox uses a 15mm thru axle and rock shox uses 20mm. My build is being done from the frame up, that why I'm going with a different fork.

Just make sure you get decent hubs and you can go 9mm qr, 15 or 20 mm with adapters....

ty for all the insight.. much appreciated

Here is a logistical note on the XTC 29er -- I just learned this the hard way today! -- make sure your spare tube has an extra long stem. The Giant rims are very tall and you need an extra long stem to attach a pump to them. I got a flat in Allamuchy today (two tacks -- who the hell puts tacks on a trail???) -- anyway, my spare had a shorter valve stem and I could not inflate it. As a result, I had to hoof it out. 😡

wow yea guess that could kinda suck...i read a couple other people say that also....hopfully im gonna go tubeless...i think

Here's a little update for anyone who might ever try to put a reba on their xtc 29er. The tapered section on the rock shox steerer is roughly 2cm longer than the taper on the fox or the marzocchi. The headtube on my large xtc 29er frame is not tall enough for the rock shox tapered steerer to work with the stock headset. What a pain in the ass. I'll post here when I figure something out.

That sucks for you but good info to have for those who are thinking of changing their fork.

As more bike manufacturers offer frames with tapered head tube and fork manufacturers offer forks with tapered steer tubes it is conceivable that there will be compatibility issues between bike and fork manufacturers.

I have one and I know of at least 2 others on this forum who have the 29-1 and 29-2. I love my XTC 29er 1. I got a great deal on a demo at the last Jorbafest. The only complaint I have is the squeaky rear brake. That was pretty much taken care of with a larger rotor but I think Giant will replace the original pads with organic pads through the dealer.

Hey Tonyride I was wondering if you ever figured out what to do with that squeaky brake. Glad to hear you got that worked out.

I got larger rotors. A friend of mine (Allamuchy Joe) gave me a set of adapters for 185mm rotors so I got a pair of rotors. I'm still planning on getting different brakes though. Maybe a set of Elixirs.

its here... thanks jay.. u da man !!!!!! chris to i dont think id be riding a giant if it werent for him..thanks chris !!!!! lets ride....... halter's is the spot !!!!!
