This Thread Blows - C19 and beyond

My neighbor teaches young children. She is vaxxed. She indicated trying to teach kids speech/pronunciation is difficult when they cannot see how her lips move/tongue placement for making certain sounds due to mask wearing. Separately, she also noted they lost a few teachers due to vax mandate.

If you think about it, even us as adults have occasionally had verbal communication issues while wearing masks. How could it not be an issue with some kids - especially those with speech impediments or hearing impairment? Our next door neighbor here in nj has an autistic child. She also works in the local school system with developmentally challenged children. She reports that mask wearing (and remote classes) is a big problem with this population.

Not anti-mask or anything. (OK, I do think they're kind of dumb pretty often. Stop double masking outside people...)

But anyone who has tried to order food while the order taker is wearing a mask, behind a plexiglass window while music is blasting in the restaurant, can see some issues with masks for proper communication.

Exactly - just 2 weeks ago I got home from the local Thai place with chicken green curry instead of shrimp!

Don't know about you but I wouldn't want to be exercising with a mask. Some kids have breathing issues without masks. Some kids who wear glasses have problems with fogging interfering with vision.

Developmentally is obvious:

There's still some debate if masks will be required for PE.

Thanks for that article. That's a very valid concern that schools should be thinking about. With both things, I think there's solutions that can be made.

That is an interesting take on masking and definitely a valid concern with the socialization.
Similarly, on my radar is a Zoom equivalent that my wife deals with as a therapist- she has to attend/pay attention in a much different way on Zoom sessions because you lose so much non-verbal communication without body language.
Interesting stuff.

But how come no one talks about the upside of masking?
Like the ability to mouth “f you” or “sh!thead”directly to someone’s face?
Trick is just to keep your eyes smiling.

I didn't read the whole article, but I can offer this anecdotal experience: my 9 month old is really confused when she sees my wife or me in a mask, and when masked people in stores try to interact with her she has no reaction.

Or That you never have to worry about if there is shit in your teeth or if you didn’t wipe your mouth enough when you’re talking to somebody

Here we are, almost 18 months into the worst respiratory pandemic in our lives and people are still picking away at the effectiveness of masks.

Above linked are a list of 49 studies (many of which are peer reviewed) concluding that masks are effective.

But, should we believe the scientists or a retired toothpaste salesman from the state leading in C19 deaths for the last month?

Failed to provide peer reviewed studies that masks don't work.
That is what a True Detective would do.

Who said masks aren't effective? The discussion above, since you obviously weren't paying attention, was on mask mandates in schools. You make the same mistake Pat did, equating no mask mandate with no one wearing masks.

Rick has been providing Peer Reviewed studies this whole time.

Princeton Wegmans and Target are back to about 90% masks. It is enough that I felt somewhat uncomfortable not wearing one.

Shoprite here in Flemington was about 75% yesterday. Stop and Shop a few days ago was maybe 30%. Mass yesterday - 20%

We're F'd. It's gonna be another long Winter of remote learning. These kid's will soon be complaining about not being allowed out to play.

I'm 2 weeks away from an outdoor music festival in Chicago and I'm starting to lose confidence.

We went to a concert at BB&T Pavilion Friday and felt grimy afterwards. Not a mask in sight.

Uh, you did. You had said that "only the vaccine matters." above. This infers that masking does not matter.

Haha now you are down to inferences? Really scraping the bottom of the barrel there, old man. Masks help, I've said that numerous times, but only vaccines really protect you.
