Watches

I'm still undecided how I feel about the "patina." I wore my watch daily in the shop for 11 years. Banged it so hard, so many times off of so many sharp objects I can't remember. Still looks great. However, I hear that from Omega it will come back looking essentially new. That would be nice until the first scratch.

No right decision. Victor can polish, too, and discussed the pros and cons with us. I think he said $300 more?

60 Minutes did a piece on Swiss watch making tonight.

This video pretty much sums up why I love mechanical watches. I tired to explain it to those who ask why I care and pay so much for a watch that only tells time and maybe the date when there are so many other watches (smart) that provide a lot more information for a fraction of the cost. I always have a tough time explaining it well enough to make it make sense. Maybe it just doesn't make sense to most and I can't argue their point but what I love about fine mechanical watches is I really appreciate engineering, craftmanship, design, attention to detail, materials, and the over feel of it. One of the things mentions about how it is a shame that there are many people who buy them with the main purpose of reselling them to make money is the reason why I only buy from an authorized dealer. Aside from not paying more than you should to help support an industry that robs true lovers of fine mechanical watches from them, I think having to wait for something that you really want only makes you appreciate it more. For me these things also hold an emotional value. If I go to a gray market dealer and get my grail watch and pay a lot more for it, I won't appreciate it nearly as much as if I had to wait for it and "earn" it if you will. I know, it doesn't make sense.

it's the difference between having something that will last 10 years (my poor Garmin is hanging tough), and something that your family can have for 100s.....

Neural watches are the way to go, you just know what time it is - no need to look.

My wife was at Ford’s Jewelers over the weekend and they mentioned they’re no longer doing Omega and Movodo. I said that’s because 90% of the people have an Apple Watch or just use their phone. She hadn’t thought about that. They were pushing hard to make a sale since they still have some in stock.

I'm surprised this hasn't happened way earlier, at least at the lower end of the market and especially females.

I like wearing a watch but there's no way I'm going to downgrade to an automatic watch from my Garmin and I'm sure I'm not the only one. It's kind of like cell phones killing off most people buying digital cameras.

But my Omega can be sold for more than we paid. So what that it costs $900 to service and you it only sorta keeps time.

Yeah, I don't know what's going on with Fords Jewelers. They used to sell and service Tag Heuer and what's where I used to go to get mine serviced.
