Wharton Conditions

Thinking of riding the 19mi outer loop this weekend. How is the overgrowth looking? Trails ridable or is the tick/chigger risk too high right now? I remember the open area being a bit overgrown even in winter so not sure its wise to ride rn.

Ticks are worse this year than previous years.

Put my feet down in the middle of a sand road, no vegetation, and dozens of ticks were on my legs within a few minutes. Deer flys and mosquitos suck (pun intended) this year too. Stay away. Come back in November, or after several days of near freezing temps, whichever occurs first. Insect borne diseases are no joke.

Seriously. I was just changing my oil in my driveway when i started getting that tick sensation. Look down at my leg and it was one of those lone star bastards. On a paved driveway!

A big thank you to the roaming trail gnome, Bill, for his Thursday’s work. In his words… “Took out 10 trees from 1st half moving CW on the PBT. At mile 7 or so is a huge oak thats gonna get a go around. Next time I'll go CCW and get the stuff i was too tired to f*k with at the end. Orange needs a healthy clipping.” Be like Bill. The next scheduled trail work day is Sunday 10/12/25. We'll do some clipping then.

From the NJ DEP. The Apple Pie Hill Fire Tower will be open on 9/27/25 for visitors to climb. This is not the Batsto fire tower. Apple Pie Hill is located within Wharton State Forest at the following coordinates: 39.807222, -74.589444. Call WSF Batsto office for info: 609-561-0024.

Nice saw....

The current TWC forecast for the 10/12/25 Sunday Wharton MTB Trail Maintenance looks good (so far). Meet in the lot at 9:00. Back around noon. Current plan is to pedal back to the problem areas, and work to resolve the problems. At the same time we'll put our ducks in a row, remove the low-hanging face slappers, all the while managing expectations and keeping the nay-sayers on the back burner.

Bring; mountain bike, bug spray, water, snacks, and a sense of humor. If you're not bringing your own favorite trail maintenance kit, clippers will be provided. You will be asked to sign a waiver. Everyone is invited. Must be over 18 years old to attend. Thanks!

The Batsto Country Living Fair is Sunday 10/19/25. The Batsto area will be very crowded that morning. Plan accordingly.

Big thanks to @pibbles for his recent work on the PBT. Sinä olet sahaaja!
