Wharton West of 206

Great forum, lots of good info.

Recently found the trails out of Batsto (here) and rode them over the last few weekends - very nice. Love the solitude & light early in the mornings.

I was looking to ride this past Sunday west of Rt 206, but found nothing. I know there are some areas suitable for trails and was told there used to be MTN biking trails, but no longer. Does anyone know where the old, now unmaintained trails might be? The trail out of Atsion Lake is hiking only. Seems there could be trails above the lake.

Any info would be appreciated.

All i know of is batsto's trails. Someone had told me there was a bike trail at atsion lake but i have yet to check it out. I'm in medford and mainly ride at batsto, allaire, and mercer county park

ive been trying to make it to clayton for a while now. i keep missing the turn i guess and just continue on to allaire haha

MTB trails west of 206

We started "trail marking" on the Atsion side of the forest before Batsto.
Spent many hours scouting and marking trails. We were limited to fire cuts and roads, can we say sugar sand slog. We had a lot of problems with other users. We would mark a trail and the next week there would be saplings cut and placed on the trail and I don't mean 1 or 2. We called the ride pick-up-sticks ride. The trail markers were removed regularly. Frustration made me refuse to waste my time any longer.
Using IMBA trail crew to introduce sustainable trails to the Wharton Management we have been able to help build a good system of trails on the Batsto side.

Ditto what SJJohn said about the struggle with the old *bicycle* trails on the Atsion side. 🙁
Yay for the Batsto side! 😀

If you like to explore and are good w/ GPS, there are hundreds of miles of motorcycle trails in the WSF. The various motorcycle clubs maintain these trails. Some are enjoyable on MTB. Most are not. None of these moto trails are marked. And only a few are mapped.

Oh, i see

Thats too bad, I wonder who would mess up all that good work? - understand how frustrating that would be.

I'm familiar with some of the enduro trails, I've ridden a couple of dual sport motorcycle events in that area - although I don't belong to a club.

Thanks for the info. I may still try to piece together a couple short loops in there - just too convenient and interesting to me.

I'll still ride those nice Batsto trails - the blue and orange loops are great! Be happy to help with maintenance.

I'm just starting with a bicycle in the woods - been riding motorcycles in Wharton for the last 4-5 years, now I'm trying to translate what might work on a MTN bike.

I see you are from Medford. There are trails all around the Medford area if you know where to look or who to ask about them. You might try reaching out to sandman. He rides a lot in Kings Grant and also in Carranza

Kings grant is decdent. i live right off of atsion rd and have a lot of quad/dirtbike trails that i hit when i am short on time the only downside is there are some short sections of sugar sand on them.

Sounds like you are near me Jersey Trash.

I have not made it to Kings Grant (where do you enter there?). I usually do a loop (with street sections /crossings) on both side of Jackson Rd (in the area of the Wildlife Refuge / easement).

Basically starts off Commonwealth Rd, behind the soccer field in Lambeth, up Jackson Hill, down around the lakes, then cut over near Cent. Lake and Camp Kettle Run towards the Sanctuary -- it kinda chopped up, but some descent sections. I've also explored a bit behind Murphy's pit, but gave up on that area.

You can get in to the trails at Kings Grant off of Bortons Rd. We parked at Woodford Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge and ride from there some times.

I'm in Highbridge too, along the wireline easement. I'm interested in trying Kings Grant soon, it sounds like I can just ride down the other side of Bortons Rd and get in there - I know where the dirt connector is at the end of the old runway, but never explored back there. I'll check it out on google/bing maps.

Away this coming weekend, but would be up for a ride the following w/e.

Small world. I would be in for that im constantly out on the bikes mainly rode lately though. Im in the old section of the neighborhood right on Highbridge Blvd. Ive done some of the Kings Grant trails but a friend of mine lives there and rides there occasionally so ill have to get a hold of him.

Do you have lights? We've been doing a night ride in Kings Grant on Wednesdays all winter and unless it's raining we will be out there tomorrow night again.

lights is probably the one thing that i still haven't bought. I've been considering them i guess it may be worth looking into a little more

Kings Grant quick ride

Thought I'd check it out. Rode from house down Borton's Rd to dirt section behind berm at the old aerohaven airport (heavy equipment back there doing something?).

Rode in a bit, passed the makeshift memorial for "Scott". Noticed big sprinkler heads and piping all along sand roads. Made it to the water tower, noticed a nice, narrow trail cutting the entrance path to the water tower. Need to explore that trail, the only one I found.
