What is it with, "Roadies?"

Recently I put it all together...if your shorts/bib do not match your jersey and if the kit does not have something to do with a shop or team you don't get a nod. Livestrong stuff does not count as that is somehow considered like wearing a McDonald's kit. (Despite all the great work the foundation does). I'm telling you, try it out.

On my ride today, I was about to wave at a guy, but noticed he had a Livestrong jersey on, then remembered what RNG1 said and gave him the cold shoulder. It was all downhill from there .. didn't acknowledge anyone else. I blame this thread 😀

I was out doing intervals about 3 weeks ago on Waterloo rd in Stanhope. I was riding my FS 29r and wearing a garish mismatched kit with a helmet that had a visor on it, so obviously not in full roadie chic regalia, at the end of my 2nd 20 minute effort a pod of perfectly dressed and matched uber geeks rode by with nary a glance or a hello. So I did what any self respecting Mtb'r would do, I turned around and chased them down over the course of 2 miles or so, and then got on the last guys wheel , sat in for the next 5 minutes or so and pulled through, never saying a word. It was very entertaining. I pretty much buried myself for the rest of my ride though it was well worth every effort.

No I didn't mean you should give him the cold shoulder, I meant if you were wearing it you wouldn't get the time of day from a "real" roadie, unless it is really early in the morning. Of course none of this is consistantly true you know.

There should be some sort of award given for this kind of selfless, courageous effort. Maybe a jersey saying, "I'm capable of ruining your posh and structured road ride. Just try me."

I think the problem is that you just passed them...:hmmm:😀

THAT may be the problem. I don't expect HUNDREDS of people on 9W to offer greetings and salutations. However, when I come up to someone and pass them, I generally give a nice little, "Good Morning."

I know that they are just jealous of my super hot tri bike...lol

Next time I will indeed give a little giggle as I pass... THAT will probably start them thinking...."what is that crazy chick giggling about?"

Just had to vent about it since it was bugging me. I took a bunch of deep breaths, read all of your wonderful posts and I think I'm over it. YES, I'm totally over it.

🙂

Btw - were you out on 9W this afternoon around 1pm? If that was you, I waved fwiw...😎

I always give people a quick nod and hello and it's usually reciprocated, maybe roadies are nice in SJ

my favorite is to wave and yell hello very enthusiastically

then they give you this long hard look "do i know this guy???" or "who is that???"

i think they get embarrassed sometimes ;-)

road rules?

I ride solo in rahway park once or twice a week. To those of you unfamiliar with it, its basically a counter-clockwise mile loop on a 2 lane one way street. Recently i have had riders come up behind me and just stay there. They slow down when i do and speed up when i do but never pass. Am i "supposed" to move over to the right let them pass. Not that im going to, just wondering. My ave. speed is around 20MPH.

They are called wheel-suckers. In many cases, they don't have the legs to go any faster but enjoy sitting in your draft. It could be fun if you are in the mood for a little friendly competition. If you are wanting to be alone, they can be super annoying.

Personally, if you sit on my wheel, you had better be ready to be sociable. Otherwise, I'll point out that I already have a shadow and you are not welcome.

Hope you guys don't mind indulging me here, but the topic of wheelsuckers reminded me of a ride I did last November with a couple of friends...it was fun for me, so I thought I'd share the brief story here. My friends had dropped me on a couple of hills headed south on 9W on the tail end of a 50-miler...but with the help of another rider on the road, here's what I did to catch them (text is from an email I wrote to a friend who hadn't gone out with us that day).

-----------------

When I first caught him (my eventual "domestique") on the small "hill" a couple hundred yards after the Palisades Parkway overpass, I said "Can I ride on your wheel?".

He said "no problem...I'm going to ride around 20-21mph."

I said "ok, I'll hang on for a bit...but I have to catch those guys" (pointing to Harold and James a few hundred yards ahead).

He replied "you should take it easy...you look tired"

I said "I just need to get to the flats"

So I got on his wheel, and he actually went up to 22-23mph, so I assume he decided to help me push to catch the guys (although I don't think we made up any ground at that speed, so James/Harold must have been doing about 22-23). He kept looking back to make sure I was still there. When we got to a relatively flat area (Kiku? I don't remember exactly), I said "Ok, I think I got it...thanks!" and went by him, trying to push 24-25. Unfortunately, I guess I hadn't quite recovered enough, so I fell back to 22 pretty quickly.

I said "I guess I don't have it yet!" He laughed, got back in front, and pulled me at 24. We weren't catching up much, but the gap was definitely closing. Finally, we got to a place where there was a slight downhill...maybe where Ruckman hits 9W? Or the Boy Scout camp entrance? I don't remember exactly...but I felt better, so I went by him and said "we're turning off soon...I think I can do it now. Thanks!" He said "no problem, good luck!" and let me go. I pushed it up to 26mph...Harold and James were slowed a bit by some cars turning into Closter Dock, but the cars cleared the intersection just before I got there, so I went past everybody right at the light. Harold and James came right up and we were all together again...

I was pretty spent at this point...mostly winded and sucking air, but my calves were also starting to cramp a little. We took the rest of the ride home pretty easy.

Had a great time!
