What to expect: Mountain Bike Group Ride Levels

Ok Pearl, what's the decision?

Beginner 1
Beginner 2
etc

or
Beginner
Beginner+
etc

?

I've created the Google Calendar and am going to start making people adhere to the rules if they want to have it show up. I'll create a wiki page with the rules once you finalize them.

Your project, your call.

I like the plus stuff. numbers always confuse people.

I also think the emphasis needs to be on PACE, not SKILL. You should know the skill level needed to ride at the park.

Example;
An Advanced Allaire ride would but much easier for someone with less skills than a Intermediate Allamuchy ride.

What about a 'tbd', for a ride that depends on who shows up.

I thought of this too. If all advanced people turn up at a ride intermediate ride, its going to be MUCH faster of a pace than a full intermediate ride. I would assume the organizers would adjust accordingly.

Yes but you need to list a specific level. I'm going to be a Soup Nazi about this. You simply can't put shit like this:

"Probably an Intermediate+ ride. But if a few Advanced guys show up then we'll crank it up to Advanced to Advanced+"

There are a few things:

1. If you're going to pull crap like that, you don't really have any right to post group rides. If you post a no drop ride and drop people, I'll delete your account.

2. It should always be assumed that any ride may go +/- one level, but adhere to the general principles. If an Intermediate+ turns into Advanced, but then one guy gets tired and the ride dials back down, that's perfectly fine. If you are barely an Intermediate rider, you should be wary of showing for an Intermediate+ ride unless you're comfortable being dropped.

3. If you're the ride leader, it's your job to be somewhat responsible about what you post and what you lead.

4. Likewise, as a group participant, you should be responsible about what groups you join.

i like norm's general rules... just a "warning" to everyone

the motorcycle group i was part of started out like this, with random rides being loosely organized, and then people wanted to add some "order" to the "chaos" and before you know it a little bit of guidelines wasn't enough. so it went full retard (which you never do) and now is a rule crazy place.... some people liked it and others left the forum/group

just a heads up where this road *could* lead. doesn't mean it has to, but yah...

Noticed a cut and past error from pearls original classification using numbers in the wiki:
Beginner+ - Social ride, not very long in distance, say +8 miles.
For: Same as the 1 ride but may have a little more mileage. Would want to have a handful of rides under your belt. Think of the Allaire Beginner rides with less stops and the same pace.
No Drop Ride.

I assumed since you decided to go w/ the + that should be changed to:

Beginner+ - Social ride, not very long in distance, say +8 miles.
For: Same as the Beginner ride but may have a little more mileage. Would want to have a handful of rides under your belt. Think of the Allaire Beginner rides with less stops and the same pace.

I made the correction on the Wiki, if i'm out of step you can change it back...

I'm chiming in cause I am good at chiming in. 🙂

1. I like the +/- thing instead of numbers, but it's already been decided that +/- will be used instead of numbers, so umm...just making you feel like you made the right decision.

2. Serious question...what does someone like me do? I want advanced cause I don't like stopping, but my pace is not a murder pace, although I joke and say it is. It's a murder pace for me, but slow for the guys.

3. Finally, regarding Pearl's avatar... it's a mighty fine one!

Sounds like Inter+ or Advanced to me! These would just be guidelines, whoever organizes the ride can fine tune them 😉

Can/should people posting rides describe anticipated pace in terms of miles per hour?

I think that would only be helpful if you knew the terrain (or were rich enough to have a bike computer 😉)

a 8MPH at six mile group ride compared to 8MPH at chimney rock ride is a whole different description with the same numbers.

you raise a good point though.

No no that's awesome. Between actually contributing and the cheering at the DH40, I may have to add you to the will along with Pearl now. I'm a sucker for competency 🙂
