What to expect: Mountain Bike Group Ride Levels

Can/should people posting rides describe anticipated pace in terms of miles per hour?

I think that would only be helpful if you knew the terrain (or were rich enough to have a bike computer 😉)

a 8MPH at six mile group ride compared to 8MPH at chimney rock ride is a whole different description with the same numbers.

you raise a good point though.

What he said. It's often deceiving to people who don't know a park. You can tell them the mph, but someone will show up to a park with the impression they can hang, but the terrain kills them. But going back to what Pearl said, if it's an advanced ride where pace matters and you tell people what the pace will be, they should have ridden said park enough to know what to expect.

I guess...but if a ride post indicated something like 10 miles in 1.5 hours..it might be a good guage for people. I'm a numbers person...so I don't know what murder means unless it is quantified...or I get killed on the trail.

Thought most people except very new riders would know various park terrains as they often get compared to other parks in discussion on the forum.

So people who are not registered users and logged in can't see the calendar?

The calendar is public, anyone can see it.

The reply was referring to the wiki login. Anyone can also see the wiki, but to edit you need to use your user/pass from the message board.

Is this the calendar? I can only see stuff on it when logged in. 😕

I still like the number classification Beginner 1 etc..because then it is obvious that the mtbnj taxonomy is being use. See the current JH beginner ride thread. "Does beginner mean beginner?" Just sayin'

Will people no longer post any rides under "rides, races and events"?

I'm assuming that the idea behind the calendar isn't to replace the "rides, races and events" subforum, but to go along with it. Threads will still be made to announce/discusss rides, but the calendar offers a single location where rides can be listed in a more organized matter. If your looking for something on a specific day you can check the calendar, it will also help with regularly occuring rides, and upcoming events that sometimes get dropped off the first page of the subforum.

syncroscat, I think you may be over-thinking it a bit. The idea behind the the system is to give riders and idea of what to expect. Group rides will vary depending on who shows, but a guideline will give you a reasonable expectation of what your in for.

And Pearl, great job with this.

how could you forget the allaire beginner rides on the calendar? Frank is going to eat you.

to address the varying difficulty of parks i would suggest having levels of difficulty... something like

social / social + / intermediate / intermediate +
1 2 3 4 indicates speed ratings
a b c d indicates difficulty

so something like

an allaire beginner ride would be

social 1 a ... social ride slowest speed lowest difficulty

and a chimney rock beginner ride would be

social 1 d ... indicating slower speed but higher terrain difficulty

i hope i confused someone

Those are on the JORBA calendar. Plus Frank didn't specify Beginner or Beginner+. So no soup for you!

Thanks for playing, but...

This has been tried and it failed. When you start making 2 and 3 dimensional difficulty matrices the system is doomed to fail. You need to make it easy for people to add rides. 3 basic levels with a "super size" for each makes it easy enough.

i suppose. and your system addresses familiarity of the course so they should know what they are getting themselves into before going to a more difficult terrain

Every good leader needs a good sweep period! I'm a pro at this shit 😀...

they rapin everybody out here.

I think it's a good guide. I will edit the first post to match the wiki. It is also really hard to find it in the wiki, since you didn't put something like "Group ride" in the title. I tried to fix it, but it just fixed it in the body of the post.

Link the wiki in your first post, that way your first post will always be up to date...I'm a fan of minimizing the number of documents to be edited 😀
