Winter riding

Does everyone ride the same tires they ride during the summer months? Lower pressure?

I keep the same pressure in my tires. I don't need to have any pinch flats -- your fingers will freeze changing the tubes! 🙂

Winter riding is definitely different. You always want to leave the parking lot a little cold. Not freezing, but cold enough that you feel like you could use another light jacket on. If you leave warm, you are going to be way too hot on the ride.

Also, the silence in the woods is very surreal. There is not much noise in there during the winter, especially if there is freshly fallen snow on the ground.

Winter mud is evil stuff....No frost = No fun... I'd take frozen ground any day over cold mud... Better yet, show me a 6 inch frozen base and a little surface grit (aka "Italian Ice"), and I'll show you a slice of heaven... (We had conditions like this for 3 days about 2 years ago where the woods became a virtual concrete wave, with rideable lines everywhere)....

that was probably THE BEST riding i ever had. i rode KVSP with brett, sean and norm and man there were no such thing as "trails" everything was rideable. everything. there are pics from there somewhere. i think norm wore winter shoes too.

but as everyone said, winter riding is fantastico. i love the woods in the winter. frozen ground, nice and fast...just awesome.

Winter riding...

Don't forget the lakes. Sure the nice white "concrete" is great to ride but when it warms up, it turns to mashed potatoes. Here's a pic of me riding across Ramapo Lake last year. Yes, of course I made sure that the ice was thick enough...Winter riding is awesome and you don't need to get tires with spikes.

agree winter riding is awesome.

just keep the head, feet and hands warm and you're good to go.

rode a few times last years while it was snowing. very serene.

Should any adjustments be made to air shocks/forks? I remember hearing somewhere about changing pressure and rebound since the cold messes with them but I forget exactly what to do

All of this winter talk is getting me psyched!!! Any suggestions on how to keep the feet warm. :hmmm:

I currently ride clipless, but the shoes I have will most definately NOT keep my little piggies warm.

Does anyone ride with flat pedals and winter boots ???

I got so tired of not being able to clip in because leaves, snow and ice were crammed in my spd's. This year I picked up a pair of Shimano 545's and will be trying them out soon. They're dual sided spd's inside small platforms. I should be able to pedal with or without clipping in and the platform will at least give me something to smack my foot against to dislodge any crap that gets stuck. I'm not sure I'll have enough surface area to ride boots, but I keep hoping that someone finds me a pair of Lakes, size 42 or 43 even... (beat up loaners welcome😀) to keep my poor little toesies warm this winter.

Can't wait!!

I love the off-season. It's the few months a year I get to just go out and ride😀

Soon enough!!

keen winter hiking boots. the ones i have are good to sub 0 temps. they have a great range and are highly rated over in the Alaska bike forum. a lot of the guys use them as their base layer for long range snow rides. I found they run small so get the bigger size. they are also great for hiking when the snow is too much. not that i have to much with a pug but you never know.

i have a lightly used Gore countdown as winter jacket with zip off sleves. xxl but fits like an xl. yellow.$100.

Winter Tires

Any 29er version? You ride those with tubes?

Last year I rode 29er Rampages (with tubes) on my Karate Monkey and same tires (tubeless) on my Niner MCR... both were a blast.

This year I'm taking Sean Grady's advice and am converting my Karate Monkey into a "Po'Boy Pugsley"...lacing up a set of Sun Double Wide rims (45mm) to a cheap Shimano dyno-disc hub for "sno-lights" and a SS rear hub. Tires are the Duro Wildlife Leopard 26 x3.0 (on my Karate Monkey)... plan to use ghetto rim strips to run these tubeless... These tires are ABSOLUTE BEASTS!!!
