Cars, it's electric! Do Do Do

For day-to-day life and commuting an EV is going to work just fine for most people and families. The network and technology is not in par to what we have now when it comes to hauling and road trips, and lets face it why do you buy something as big as a 3 row SUV or minivan? It's usually for the convenience of trips. If you're in a one car household with kids IMO the EVs just aren't there yet for the masses. If you have a second vehicle to handle long range/hauling then it'll probably work for most.

Yup. I can agree with this. Very situational. I'm a little dismissive/irrational etc with my chainsaw vs electric (lol) but I accept the EV's are coming and have their place.

Yeah, I'm not ready to accept that towing my boat a normal 4 hour ride is now a 2 day "journey" with that shiny new Ford. That truck can go Frunk itself.

Although, perhaps I'm seeing this wrong. Perhaps I need two trucks and thats what the masses must be telling me. I'll have an electric truck to feel good about myself and conform because that's what we do these days...plus take the recycling down or pickup bulk paper towels and TP if the next big one hits. Plus I'll also have real truck to pull my boat and do the real shit in a timely fashion with the little amount of time I'm left with when I'm not working.

My carbon footprint will be fabulous. PS Not taking my lunch break stalking charging stations lol.

Understanding how my world works and knowing that I will need a three row car in the near future (mom is moving in screw having more kids). Also, we've sworn off future gas car purchases means we're going electric.

The current market(that I know of) has nothing that meets our needs yet, but I wanted to see who owns an EV, what's the maintenance like, what are you keeping an eye on.

Me personally ford lightning is sweet, but if the maverick comes out all electric I'd be sold, also rumors are starting regarding a 25k Tesla hatch that would be a perfect replacement for my Impreza.

I just think we could have an EV thread.
Maintenance is a the same as a regular car except for oil change, spark plugs, and possibly transmission fluid service... Brakes need bleeding as recommend. There may be some EV stuff that need service as per manufacturer

Our issue is two car seats and 3 to 4 adults, I'm pretty firm on no more gas. I'm in no rush as we just finished paying off two cars and there are no options. Once you get to a family of 5 it's either three rows or two cars.

We'll get a three row and a SUV that is Forester sized as our fifth wheel is my mother and i think she is going to want her time away from us so we can go smaller.

The only reason we take the mini van on trips instead of the y is the extra seats. We usually bring one or two grandparents with us. But if the 6 person seating in the cybertruck is comfortable, that's it, no more minivan. On long trips I don't mind stopping every 4 hours for a stretch, bathroom break, meal, whatever. And having grandparents and kids in the car makes for more frequent and longer stops anyway. There's plenty of people that take cross country trips in EV's, dozens of videos on YouTube breaking down the experience. It's all overwhelmingly positive.

That said performance enthusiasts are unlikely to be on the early edge of converting bc part of the draw to cars is the sound and driving dynamics, and electric cars offer no (natural) sound and a completely different driving dynamic (no need to shift gears ect).

This. My cousin just bought one and after a few trips around town I was bored. I'll take 8MPG and straight pipes any day🤣

For real though, on your other point, I've done several road trips in the past 2 years where an electric car isn't an option. Even this past weekend on the Blue Ridge would be a no-go.

finally, tesla might make something I would buy

I have nothing against EV cars, i would buy one....but unlike @Mahnken I would never spend 50k on any vehicle that is going to be daily driven in this hell hole of a driving state.....then factor in kids riding in this expensive vehicle...no way. To me its like spending $3000 on a fancy couch for my child and dogs to jump all over....no thanks. I bought a CPO outback 3.6R for 23k and my focus for 18k......But a proper hatchback for 25k, ok now were talking. Although its tesla....if you want it another color it will be 26,000 and if you want wheels it will be 27,000...you want them to enable the already installed autopilot, 35,000....

Saw stop shop morris plains installing some kind of EV charger but looks like only 1 atm . Also bp station in Springfield installing charging stations not sure of type but I imagine within next couple years almost all businesses will have some kinda option to charge your EV .

When I'm commuting i do 130 miles a day. Most trips i take are over 300 miles ( before pandemic this was 5 or 6 trips a year between work and personal), I do drive straight through generally. Which car has a real world range of 200+ miles (rated ranges are a load ofncrap just like mpg numbers). Also show me an electric car that recharges in 30 minutes. (Fully not this up to 60% crap)
So what I read here, is only 5-6 times a year you would need to consider where to charge mid trip. Other than those trips, you would never need to stop anywhere at all to charge, if you plug it in at night. Seriously, imagine going to the gas charging station 5 times a year. Just sayin.

WOW, @rick81721 wife getting a X! Time to retire the GT350 jk
@Mahnken congrats on the Y

This is a solid thread! 🙂 But will be very opinionated haha. For the EV seekers don't pay attention to the strongly opinionated. Do what is right for your needs.

We are on our 5th EV so it goes without saying that it works for us and it works for majority of people. I've spent 4.5 hrs driving my 2015 Model S (230ish displayed range) straight a couple weekends ago. No supercharging. I've driven the Model 3 from Hillsborough to Newark, DE and back, NO SUPERCHARGING. I spend hella time in the car traveling for work. It could be 2-3 hrs per day. I enjoy the Model S 100% from sick highway over taking or bumper to bumper autopilot.

ICE drivers:
How many times do you get gas? (driving to/from work, shuttling kids, errands) twice a week? So 10min per week? 40 min per month. If you need to supercharge just once a month the benefits of a EV outweigh the range and time constraints. That's just my opinion. PLUS the cost of gas.
